  5. 4.0 Livingston County Courthouse (19 reviews)
    - We love this courthouse!

    Livingston County Courthouse image
We have seen many "small town America" courthouses on the square, but this is by far our favorite. It's just beautiful. We have been here in October and saw it lit up with pink lights at night, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Awesome to see. If you have the time to make the stop, be sure you do. One of many great stops in Pontiac. When we were there previously, we were able to go in and look around. We were there on a Saturday/Sunday this trip, so not sure if that's still a possibility in our "Covid world". If it is, take the time to check it out. See more..
  6. 4.5 Jefferson County Historical Village (15 reviews)
    - A sweet stop. Great people!
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Walking Areas • Scenic Walking Areas
    Jefferson County Historical Village image
We came upon this by accident but it looked interesting so we stopped. It happened to be a day there was an ice cream social. The staff greeted us very warmly. They are volunteer caretakers and docents who were very friendly and helpful. I consider the village to be a museum, with replica and authentic cabins and structures from the 1800s. A walking path connects them and our tour was mostly self-guided. There is a hospital, a school, a church, a print shop, a blacksmith shop (we could smell it before we arrived) and others complete with antique equipment and furniture from the time period. Some buildings are air conditioned. The main building seems to house county historical information as well as some interesting items and photos. The setting is very shaded and pleasant. There is no admission but we made a donation in the box upon entry. See more..
  7. 5.0 Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion (7 reviews)
    - Beautiful Home to Visit
Sunday: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas
Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion image
If you are in town visiting the Staley Museum or downtown Decatur, don't miss this added stop. The Mansion is located a pleasant brick paved walk from the Staley Mansion and offers guided tours. The tour wasn't overly long and the docents were both very excited to be there and telling us it's history. The mansion boasts several important artifacts as the Governor was a legitimate friend to Abraham Lincoln and was even supposed to attend the theater with him on the fateful night of his assassination. They also have one of Santa Anna's legs, wow. See more..

    Lincoln - Douglas Square image
A series of debates occurred in 1858 for a senate race between incumbent Stephen Douglas and challenger Abraham Lincoln. The final debate took place here in view of the Mississippi River in Alton, Illinois. The event has been honored with a sculpture of the 2 gentlemen. The facial expressions and body stances tell the story. See more..

  10. 5.0 Historic Brick Road (route 66) (4 reviews)
    - Finally, a piece of the authentic road

Historic Brick Road (route 66) image
I’ve read quite a bit about the original alignments and pavements of old State Highway 4 in Illinois and the transformation into National Highway Route 66, but it is rare that you see original bridges and pieces of the road throughout the Illinois sections of Route 66. Taken over by the Interstate system and often relegated to simply a marked historic service road of those vast highways, it becomes a ribbon broken into hundreds of small pieces on its quest from Chicago to Santa Monica. The Illinois pieces of Route 66 take about 3 days to do them respectfully depending on the time of year and venue hours.and this certainly is one of the most historic pieces in Illinois and the entire western United States. We were happy to have experienced this fading relic with the hope that private and public energy keeps this slice of Americana alive. It’s easy to find and a quick trip off the big roads. See more..

  12. 3.0 Grand Village of the Illinois (2 reviews)
    - Nothing Here
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas • Ghost Towns
It is a guessing game to imagine where this site is even located. Just an empty field - not a plaque or any indication of its location. Such an insult to the great history of this area and those historical icons who graced the site centuries ago. The State of Illinois has neglected to do anything to recognize such an important part of our Native American history. See more..
