Jefferson County Historical Village, Illinois, United States

A sweet stop. Great people!

We came upon this by accident but it looked interesting so we stopped. It happened to be a day there was an ice cream social. The staff greeted us very warmly. They are volunteer caretakers and docents who were very friendly and helpful. I consider the village to be a museum, with replica and authentic cabins and structures from the 1800s. A walking path connects them and our tour was mostly self-guided. There is a hospital, a school, a church, a print shop, a blacksmith shop (we could smell it before we arrived) and others complete with antique equipment and furniture from the time period. Some buildings are air conditioned. The main building seems to house county historical information as well as some interesting items and photos. The setting is very shaded and pleasant. There is no admission but we made a donation in the box upon entry.

    Must see in Mt. Vernon!
The Historical Village is truly a one-of-a-kind attraction. During their annual fall festival, you can tour each building while villagers are dressed in 1800s outfits with soap demonstrations, jam tastings, blacksmithing, and more! The old calaboose jail and one room school house are my favorites to adventure in. There is also a print shop, general store, church, cabin, and other historic buildings. The village is run by volunteers who are all friendly and inviting. There are various music events and socials held here throughout the year, as well. It is quite a unique experience in an absolutely beautiful setting!

    A perfect historical village
Care was taken to locate this village on a site where weather would not easily interfere with one's enjoyment. Although the day we visited was hot and humid, the forested walkways were cool and shady. The size of the village is such that one can get an accurate view of pioneer life without being exhausted by it. Of special note was the smithy which has an assortment of functioning forges. The volunteers at the village were typical Midwestern people, friendly, optimistic, and helpful.
