4.5Holy Name Cathedral(1.112 reviews) - Spectacular Catholic Church Sunday: 6:30 AM - 7:00 PM Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
Whenever we are in Chicago on a Sunday, we always attend the 10:30am mass. Feels like attending a mass in a church in Europe. Not sure what is going on with the protestors in front of the Cathedral, they have been there every time there is a mass. They don’t harass or bother anyone, but it’s a bit strange.See more..

This is a deceptively big place. We ended up spending 3 hours here. We first visited the visitor center; watched the movie on the background and got a map of where to go. I recommend doing this first. We drove to the stations of the cross and got out and walked.. I recommend walking it; all stations have audio. Was very peaceful; and got me feeling more serene. We did go then to the main shrine; at the bottom of the hill with many seats. We visited the chapel around the back; which is very well maintained. Directly across from the Main Shrine is The Millennium Spire - which was built to commemorate the Third Millennium. It stands at 85' tall and is made of stainless steel. Then we went to an area with bells and a pond. Finally, we got back in the car and went to The Lourdes Grotto. The Grotto is actually very near the entrance, but we saved it for the end of the visit. Things were extremely quiet and peaceful on the day we visited.See more..
4.5Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple(207 reviews) - Not to be missed FLW church. Sunday: Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
Unity Temple (1905-08) is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the 20th Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright List, and represents a defining moment in Frank Lloyd Wright’s early career. Designed in Wright’s Oak Park Studio for his own Unitarian congregation, it is one of the first public buildings in America to feature exposed concrete and is Wright’s greatest public building of his Prairie era. The harmony of the building’s strikingly geometric architecture and decorative elements exemplifies Wright’s theory of organic design. Unity Temple announced a new era of innovation in modern architecture.See more..
It was very nice to see a symbol of our faith suddenly appear on the horizon as we drove along the highway. This huge cross immediately reminded me of who we are in Christ and what I am called to do. I find its unique shape particularly striking, but I can understand why some people wouldn’t like it. The cross represents the ugliest event in history. It’s through the pain and ugliness that we have life eternally.See more..

5.0Nauvoo Temple(93 reviews) - Wow, you can see this from everywhere when in Mauvoo Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
It is not a regular church. It is a Mormon temple: so you can just walk in and visit like a regular church. Even if it is open. Tourists are not really welcomed inside but at the entry there is a lobby/ desk and you can ask for a brochure about its history and done interiors. Very impressive from outside . See more..
4.5Carthage Jail(47 reviews) - A Sobering Place of Sadness But Shouldn't Be Missed Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Religious Sites
This is a place of sadness and reflection. It is beautifully maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the sister missionaries do a great job telling the tragic tale of Joseph and Hyrum Smith's last days. It is sobering to think about what happened there and of John Taylor singing "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" because Joseph asked him to. I thought of children left without a father and wives left as widows. The Church was left without a prophet until Brigham Young was made prophet - what shoes he had to fill! This is a meaningful place for members of the LDS faith but others can also learn and feel the spirit which will guide and teach.See more..
4.0Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple(28 reviews) - Balaji temple at Aurora Sunday: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
The temple opens at 9.00 Am and closes at 9.00 PM-that is open throughout the day. There is a separate queue for sarva public darshan and separate queue for those who want to archanai. The charge for archanai is 12$ and you will get only two plantains (Bananas) or one orange or Apple in the brown cover. I feel that it is it is little costlier. If they are giving with two PAN leaves and supari with that together with that few flowers. But it is not so; we get only two plantains and after archanai they will give you back those Bananas. There is a Siva Linga sannidhi and Ambal sannidhi, Ganesa sannidhi and Valli Deva sena Murugan sannidhi, Iyyappa Swami sannidhi which is a great unique feature in this Vishnu temple that is not seen in any Vishnu temples in INDIA. We have to appreciate this uniqueness of this temple. After temple visit you can come to the canteen for food which is very cheap and sumptuous for the priceSee more..

4.5Nauvoo State Park(12 reviews) - pleasant stay on great river road journey north Historic Sites • Religious Sites
Stayed 2 nights as first stop on our journey north on the great river road to the head waters in Itasca Minnesota. Pleasent pine wooded fairly level class A 30 amp site number 19 less than 60 feet from fresh water spigot. 10 minute setup and cooked foil wrap kielbasa, green bean, potato and onion fit for a first evening rest. Toured old Nauvoo settlement in Smartie as most buildings were closed due to Covid. Drove down and up the Illinois river road and crossed over to Fort Madison to get premium gas fill up (8 gal) for Smartie (only Regular or Diesel in Nauvoo) and a Subway sandwich in Fort Madison River Side Park where I marshalled in the 2009 Bassmasters Elite tournament. Headed north to Mississippi Palisades State Park.See more..

1.0Briscoe Mounds(2 reviews) - Underwhelming Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Religious Sites
i have been to Cahokia, Mound City, Fort Ancient, Serpent Mound, Hopewell NHS, and many other mound builder sites across the Midwest so I was excited to see that our route for the day brought us down I-55 just a few minutes away from Briscoe Mounds(Archaeological survey site wi-25) so we had to make the detour. That was a waste of time. The site is 38 acres with no facilities or developed trails. The dirt parking lot has room for six cars if five of them are motorcycles. There is a farmhouse closer to the two teeny tiny (compared to Cahokia) mounds and I expected to be confronted by a farmer with a shotgun if I ventured too far from the parking lot. Unless you are an archaeologist or have a special interest in the mound building culture stay in the car and head to nearby Channahon State Park;See more..

5.0Chicago Illinois Temple(1 review) - Beautiful church in an idyllic setting Sunday: Religious Sites
The Chicago Illinois Temple is the 35th temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). It is the 2nd of three temples that have been built in Illinois. The temple is characterized by its six white-tipped spires rising from each corner of the building. The manicured grounds—including two captivating water features—are open for public enjoyment. The site of Chicago Illinois Temple was dedicated in August 1983 by Gordon B. Hinckley, a member of the church's First Presidency. Two years later, the church itself was dedicated. The structure itself was constructed in gray buff marble and its roof features gray slate. Architects used a revolutionary design for LDS temples, adapting the traditional six-spire design and adding modern motifs. The Chicago temple is able to accommodate a broad spectrum of church members, from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds as Spanish, Polish, Korean and other Asian cultures, as well as members who are deaf. Construction of the temple also allowed local Latter-day Saints to contribute their means, talents, and time. Children donated pennies. Young women made dolls for the temple nursery. Women crocheted altar cloths. Many donated hours in helping with the open house, held 15 July–3 August 1985, during which over one hundred thousand people toured the temple. The temple now has a total of 29,751 square feet, five ordinance rooms, and four sealing rooms.See more..
