Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple, Illinois, United States

4.5 (207 reviews) Saturday: 9:00 AM - 11:15 AM Spent Ranking #2 in Oak Park Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites

Not to be missed FLW church.

Unity Temple (1905-08) is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the 20th Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright List, and represents a defining moment in Frank Lloyd Wright’s early career. Designed in Wright’s Oak Park Studio for his own Unitarian congregation, it is one of the first public buildings in America to feature exposed concrete and is Wright’s greatest public building of his Prairie era. The harmony of the building’s strikingly geometric architecture and decorative elements exemplifies Wright’s theory of organic design. Unity Temple announced a new era of innovation in modern architecture.

Excellent tour of a stunning building, recently restored but ever timeless.
Took the “in depth tour”. Carolyn was our guide and presented so much information- but didn’t overwhelm us! We started with the exterior, then moved inside, savoring each section of the building, and Wright’s design and ideas unfolded seamlessly. We were left in awe.

Interesting Building but Closed After 2:00
This is one of the signature buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright and his American Prairie style. Unfortunately, I thought we were supposed to go after our Wright House tour but it closes in the early afternoon. All we got to see was the exterior. Still there were many visible Prairie School aspects like the horizonal line, geometric shapes and no visible door from the exterior of the property. While I wish I had gotten to see the interior of the church it was the end of a long day. Remember to go before 2:00 to visit.
