Lock 16 Visitor Center & LaSalle Canal Boat image
Start your boat tour at the Visitor Center where you purchase very reasonably priced tickets. Walk across the canal bridge and down some steps to the boat. You can also drive to the parking lot. First is short, entertaining and informative talk about mules and those who pull the canal boat. On board the boat, the narrator provides a history of the Illinois and Michigan Canal as you slowly glide a short distance on a restored section of the canal. The mule actually pulls the boat at maybe 2 miles/hour. The whole tour takes a bit over an hour. The canal was a very important link for transportation of goods between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River from about 1850 to 1930. The whole tour is fun and informative. See more..
  2. 4.5 Celebration River Cruises (128 reviews)
    - Enjoy the sunset cruise

Approximately 2 1/2 hours on the Mississippi. The evening begins with a delicious prime rib buffet, followed by musical entertainment. Be sure to go to the third level deck after dinner. The sunset is spectacular, framed by the bridges. Unfortunately this time of year there is not enough daylight to enjoy the scenery along the shoreline. The cruise is smooth. Of course there is a gift shop on the boat and on the dock, but the items are beautiful and high quality. See more..

We wanted to be on the water, this was a great way to suffice that for a little time. An hour cruise was a little short but the boat ride was very nice. Love the ladies that work on the boat, they were all very friendly and full of knowledge about the area. Maybe next time we can do a longer cruise...gotta be in the know cause the cruises book up quickly! See more..
  4. 4.0 Pride Of Oregon Paddlewheeler (4 reviews)
    - An Unexpected Nature Cruise

    Pride Of Oregon Paddlewheeler image
I spent a very enjoyable outing aboard the Pride of Oregon on September 17th. I made a last-minute reservation, including lunch, cod fillet. While I did not make the time cutoff for ordering lunch, the staff was able to accommodate me. Next time, I will make a reservation at least one day in advance. If you are lucky, you will witness one of most incredible bird encounters I have seen. Towards the end of the cruise, an osprey stuck a bald eagle in flight above the sternwheeler. The bald eagle may have been encroaching in the osprey’s best fishing area and received a stern warning about poaching. The bald eagle flew away without contesting the airspace. Regrettably, I did not have my camera ready and missed what would have been the nature shot of the year. I wished I lived closer so that I could view the fall foliage along the river in October.
