A friend and I went to Freeport to check out the antique, gift and thrift stores. There are about 7-8 of them all within walking distance downtown. Luecke's is the largest. The stairs are steep but doable for anyone in reasonable shape. And there's that stair lift for those who aren't. On the second floor (apparently there is no first floor) I would say there are about 25 rooms full of interesting things. Most of it is fairly reasonably priced. We live an hour away and have antiqued our way through central Illinois, so after researching online, we drove to Pocahontas. (We stopped at a new antique place on our way in Worden - the Chirping Frog. I also recommend that place!) Pocahontas Antiques not only has a great selection of antiques and collectibles, but it is decorated so quaintly and uniquely! We spoke to the owner, and it was obvious how much she loved this store - and the town and its' people! She couldn't say enough nice things about Pocahontas, and she and her husband were hoping to remodel some other places as well. We will definitely be going back to shop there again, and to eat at the Powhaten, and to have a drink at the Copper Dock Winery! Gigantic mall with a helpful staff. This mall is overwhelming in the goods it sells, and they are so varied. We found lots of good deals here. The only downside to this was one male employee would not wear a mask. We guess he thought he was special, but we thought he was a fool. This place is a semi-dangerous disaster. I have never in my life seen anything like it. Decades of junk piled up over three stories. There is so much in here that has been buried there is no way you can ever see everything and most everything in there was as bad as or worse than flea market type junk. Almost no true antiques and what few decent things we stumbled upon were seriously over-priced. There is very poor lighting in most of the store with the clerk offering us a flashlight. I'm not much of a shopper and certainly do not have any interest in spending time in resale shops but I had time to kill in the neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Hummingbird Upscale Resale has a little of everything. Everything in the store was displayed so professionally. It felt more like a boutique store than a resale shop. The owner was very engaging and pleasant. I was thumbing through a stack of very gently used vinyl lp's. She came over and told me she had another batch in the back. I ended up buying all but two of that stack. She also had a couple of very nice pieces of Belleek China from Ireland, very well priced. As a former antique dealer, I haven't seen this kind of furniture selection for awhile. Prices are fair and since this is a single owner shop, the owners are there if you want to deal. If you can, avoid carrying a bag or backpack because some of the aisles are a narrow squeeze. Attic is for serious shoppers who like to dig.
