I Have Several Loved Ones Buried At Camp Butler. And Miss them All So Very Much. I Like to take my time when I am there. It’s So Very Peaceful. The Grounds are Well taken care of. And if some one comes by they speak. If workers are around they try to let you have your time to yourself. I have been coming to Camp Butler since I was a child with my Grandma after my Grandpa Passed away. That was so many years ago. I Enjoy Seeing all the Graves During the Hoildays. The Wreathes are so Pretty. I want to Say a Big Thank You To Everyone that Works At Camp Butler. God Bless You All. Susie Weitzel LarsonSee more..
Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is a memorable place to visit that many people are not aware of (so it seems, in spite of it being the second largest National Cemetery). I wish more people are made aware of such awesome places that help in appreciating the selfless contributions from our Veterans. I was blown away by the vastness and the serenity of the place when I visited recently during a weekday afternoon. The road leading to the entrance does not appear to introduce the importance of the place; hopefully that will be addressed in the future. There are various interesting places to walk around and absorb the significance of the place. The statue of Lincoln, and the surrounding walking area are spectacular. There is a small bell carillon that plays select military tunes which adds to the melody of the place. I wish to visit this place again and attend a memorial service to pay tribute to the Veterans. We went to this cemetery to see some mobster graves. It is really huge and there are many interesting graves. I wish it wasn’t that hot that day and I could have spent more time there. If you’re in the area and interested in Chicago history ( mobsters etc..) then you should stop by. See more..
I went over the July 4th Weekend while driving through Bloomington. I figured I would pay my respects to some veterans for their sacrifices and ended up walking around looking at the headstones and monuments. There is a really neat one of MLB Hall of Famer Charles "Old Hoss" Radborne.See more..

4.0Forest Home Cemetery(14 reviews) - Not your usual cemetery Sunday: Cemeteries
Probably most people come to Forest Home Cemetery to see the Haymarket Martyrs Monument, a National Historic Landmark, and the Emma Goldman grave nearby. It's well worth visiting just for those. But there's also an extensive section of elaborate"gypsy" graves, often with various offerings nearby, a fascinating Ancient Order of Druids monument, and a mausoleum of a radio pioneer featuring goddesses with headphones. Lots more, too, of course, but those are some of my highlights.See more..

4.5Eagle Cliff - Miles Cemetery(11 reviews) - Spur of the moment stop Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Cemeteries
I love cemeteries, and a friend who lives in Waterloo mentioned that we should see this one. It was beautiful and tranquil. There’s a lot of information on the board near the small parking lot in the center of the cemetery. The headstones that are there have a mix of legible and worn engraving. We walked through the entire place and the empty mausoleum. It is definitely peaceful and, in fall, so beautiful. Set your GPS to Eagle Cliff Cemetery and it won’t be hard to find. There is surveillance there and it’s closed from dusk to dawn. It was worth the trip if you like this sort of thing. See more..
This is a National Cemetery here in the tip end of Illinois. It is over 150 years old. It was established as a place of honor for the men who died during the Civil War. There are over 500 graves of unknown soldiers who earned the right to be buried here for as Lincoln said "their last full measure of devotion." It is under perpetual care, along with Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.See more..
4.0Thomas Lincoln Cemetery(7 reviews) - Shiloh Cemetery is small, a "place of peace", and completes story from Thomas Lincoln farm site Cemeteries
Modest sized cemetery with both an old section and new section beside charming brick church. Largest and most prominent stones are for Thomas Lincoln and his wife, Abe's stepmother, Sarah, so they're very easy to locate. Middle of nowhere but good directional signage if you approach from main roads (it's more difficult to find your way OUT of the area and back to an interstate). Well cared for, maintained at least in part by Lincoln Log Cabin site workers.See more..
4.5Funks Grove Church & Chapel in the Trees(7 reviews) - Refreshing and peaceful stop along a busy highway! Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries • Churches & Cathedrals
Looking for a beautiful spot to relax for a few minutes on your trip on I-55 in Illinois? This is it! This meticulously maintained historic church and cemetery takes you back to a time when the pace was slower and your spiritual family was close by. Literally in dense woods at Funks Grove, the church is charming. Across the road is a chapel in the tall trees, an outdoor worship center. Pause your trip for this lovely respite!See more..

I have gone with kids and with friends. Each time something strange has happened. One time a deer was unaware we were there-it was eainig along the outside of the fence by the cemetery. When it came to the gate it stopped and stared into the cemetery for almost 5 minutes---just staring. It decided not to go in and walked away. omy gosh it gave us all goosebumps!! 5.0Clayville Historic Site(4 reviews) - A well spent afternoon Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries • Monuments & Statues • Ghost Towns
My wife and I visited Clayville on April 18, 2017. Having never been there, we didn't know what to expect. We were more than pleasantly surprised! Besides the old Broadwell Inn stagecoach stop, there were several other structures. All had fascinating histories, which were explained in great detail by our very knowledgeable guide (a retired history whose name escapes me). The Pleasant Plains Historical Society not only lovingly restored the old inn, but they brought in other historic structures from around Illinois to reconstruct the village. The site also has a very good agricultural museum in and old barn filled with artifacts dating to the early-middle 1800s (including one from the Donner party!). Clayville is MUST SEE for all history lovers and it's only 13 miles NW of Springfield. Don't miss it!See more..
4.5Memorial Park Cemetery(4 reviews) - Memorial Park Cemetery Sunday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Cemeteries
Memorial Park Cemetery distinguishes itself from other cemeteries with floral arrangements and plantings that make it a peaceful place to visit. Our lagoons provide a sanctuary for swans and ducks that add to the beauty of the park. The lovely cremation garden located in the west portion of the park impresses visitors with a story of life. Our broad lawns are artistically landscaped with an abundance of magnificent shrubbery, evergreens and flowers that make it a place where one may meditate, reflect and worship. The Memorial Park Mausoleum and columbarium exhibits beautiful stained glass windows complimented by marble wall and floors from many parts of the world. The main chapel and Chapel of Peace display ceilings that are hand painted and stain glass windows that lend to the atmosphere of quiet dignity and beauty. Also, located on the grounds is a functional greenhouse that provides many of the flowers for the plantings throughout the park. The Memorial Park Greenhouse displays a variety of planting selections and winter decorations that add to the beauty of individual family spaces. Weekly floral bouquets are also available for purchase that can be placed anywhere in the cemetery. The staff at Memorial Park is knowledgeable and has many years of experience to assist families with preneed and immediate need arrangements. Memorial Park Cemetery is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Please contact us if you need immediate assistance, or if you would like more information about our services.See more..
4.5Queen of Heaven Cemetery and Mauseleum(3 reviews) - Paying our respects to family... Beautiful place. Cemeteries This is a beautiful place that was empty on the day we visited. We were greeted by a caretaker at the entrance and a computerized list aided in finding our family members. The stained glass art windows are amazing. They go on and on in each alcove and named space. There are carvings and statues and every nook and cranny makes this worth a visit if you are in appreciation of Christian and Catholic religious art. There are several levels and an elevator. Please remember that this is also a sacred space so please maintain the dignity of the building and use by a quiet walk through should you chose to visit. A local family member gave us a warning that the isolation has led to problems there but looking at the parking lot, being aware of our surroundings and checking in at the entrance gave us no misgivings. 5.0Oak Hill Cemetery(2 reviews) - Family's final resting place Cemeteries My father is entombed in a lovely outdoor mausoleum at Oak Hill Cemetery in Blue Island, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. So it was on a recent late-summer day that my wife, my sister and I gathered to place the urn containing my mother's ashes in the crypt next to her beloved husband. Located at 1900 South Kedzie Avenue, at the corner of Kedzie and 119th Street, it is a large burial site that was founded in 1902. It covers a green, leafy landscape from 119th to 123rd Street, from Kedzie to Central Park Avenue. Beverly Cemetery is to the east and Lincoln Cemetery is to the south. Oak Hill allows for entombment and interment. There are several indoor and outdoor mausoleums. My parents are entombed on one side of a large outdoor mausoleum while my in-laws are entombed on the other side. My maternal grandparents are entombed in an outdoor mausoleum on the other side of the cemetery while my sister's son and some of my wife's relatives are buried nearby. Eventually, my wife and I will be entombed in the mausoleum near my wife's parents. Whenever we visit, Oak Hill cemetery is well kept. It is a peaceful and serene place.See more..

4.5Ridgewood Memorial Park(2 reviews) - Family resting places Sunday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Cemeteries
Ridgewood Memorial Park is a non-sectarian cemetery that is open to persons of all faiths and ethnic origins. Situated 4.5 miles northwest of the City of Chicago on Milwaukee Avenue (Illinois 21), Ridgewood was, in fact, carved from the woods and fields, and managed to maintain its pastoral quality as the community absorbed the surrounding farmlands. It is a 168-acre sanctuary for remembrance and contemplation that offers a quiet, natural respite. Our cemetery is beautifully landscaped with an abundance of stately mature maple, oak, and majestic blue spruce trees. Rolling grounds, winding roads, and tranquil lakes (populated with swans, ducks, migrating birds and other wildlife) add to its bucolic atmosphere. Massive columns supporting skillfully wrought iron gates comprise the main entrance to Ridgewood. The Helen Fell Memorial Bell Tower, mirrored by Tower Lake, is one of the main features at Ridgewood. Amid its arboreal setting, the lake gains a mystical richness; even the soft organ tones from the Bell Tower seem to come from the waters themselves. Although Ridgewood is rich in history dating back to 1920, it easily meets the preferences of modern families for services ranging from traditional ground interment, cremation and urn memorialization, plus mausoleum entombment. Our outdoor Tower Lake Mausoleum (facing beautiful Tower Lake) and the indoor Swan Lake Mausoleum (named for the graceful swans that live there), offer many options for families who select mausoleum entombment. Swan Lake Mausoleum includes a circular design chapel that comfortably seats 200 people. Individual mausoleum crypts, companion crypts, private family rooms, and marble/glass front niches are available in this state-of-the-art building. Overall, Ridgewood is an active and vital cemetery with ample land and other resources available for burial and memorial options, resplendent for today’s generation and those to come. We’re proud to be a member of the Dignity Memorial® network of fune...See more..
3.0Cherry Miner's Cemetery(1 review) - A Memorial about a Tragedy. Cemeteries • Monuments & Statues The Cherry Mining Disaster is an event that I don't think many people know about. I ran across this on a Only in Your State type website and decided to stop by and check it out on my roadtrip. I've now read up a little on the event online. 5.0Burr Oak Cemetery(1 review) - Where Emmett Till is buried Cemeteries There are more famous cemeteries in the Chicago area. Graceland, Rosehill, Oak Woods, Bohemian National Cemetery and Mount Olivet come to mind. But Burr Oak Cemetery has a history all its own. Established in 1927 as one of the few early Chicago cemeteries that focused on the needs of the African-American community, it is the final resting place of many black celebrities, including Chicago blues musicians and athletes. While its listed address is 4400 West 123rd Street in southwest suburban Alsip, its main entrance is at West 127th Street at Kostner Avenue, east of Cicero Avenue. My wife and I have driven past Burr Oak Cemetery for years. It is en route to my sister's house in Palos Heights and it is near Oak Hill Cemetery, where my parents and grandparents and my wife's parents are buried. Out of curiosity, we visited Burr Oak recently to see the gravesites of some of its most notable burials, including singer Dinah Washington, boxing champion Ezzard Charles and, perhaps most famous of all, Emmett Till, the 14-year-old Chicagoan whose murder in Mississippi in 1955 helped galvanize the civil rights movement in this country. Others include attorney and community activist Earl B. Dickerson, who helped establish and preserve Burr Oak Cemetery, jazz musician Willie Dixon, Harlem Globetrotters basketball star Inman Jackson, World War II Marine Corps general Lyle H. Miller, singer Billy Williams, civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Clay Evans and businesswoman Annie Malone, one of the first African-American women to become a millionaire.See more..

Evergreen Cemetery has been providing services to the community since 1910. For more than a century, our commitment has remained unchanged, yet our services have always responded to the changing needs of the community. When Evergreen Cemetery was first established, it was built as a memorial park, and the natural beauty of a park-like setting still exists in the Knollwood, Spring Grove and Edgewood Gardens sections. As time passed, changing with the needs of the community, upright monuments were allowed, and gardens were developed with shrubs and private hedges to create the serene environment surrounding the upright memorials. Cypress Grove, Fairmount and Lawnview gardens, among others, incorporate the diversity of beautiful monuments, varied in size, color and shape, each one expressing a unique and individual personal tribute to each family they represent. Evergreen Cemetery offers gardens with gently sloping hills nestled within a wooded array of colorful foliage and trees. Cedar Hill, Maple Grove Gardens, Acacia and Forest Hill are just a few of the gardens that have many unique qualities to meet the diverse needs for individuals selecting that special place, the place that will be home for their family members for time eternal. Evergreen Cemetery has a wide array of options to fit your needs. From elegant private family estates to exquisite community mausoleums, our cemetery is a final resting place that offers peace and tranquility from generation to generation. We offer areas dedicated to veterans – our field of honor – and to churches, including St Nicholas and Monument of Faith, among others, as well as a section honoring the Patron Saint Guadalupe. Evergreen Cemetery is dedicated to supporting and honoring our community, and we are the proud home of the new Gatekeepers section with a monument dedicated to icons of the community, including Reverend Clay Evans, Apostle RD Henton, Reverend Willie T. Barrow, Father George Clements and others. Evergreen Ce...See more..
