See the Elephants!

JMJ Thanks to the Showman League of America, the "Showman's Rest" section is in this cemetery. On June 22,1918, a terrible train accident killed 86 people and injured 127 of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. Make a left turn when you enter the cemetery and see the 5 granite elephants guarding and bemoaning the graves. Many graves are marked "unknown " and with an assigned number. Take some time to see this wonderful tribute to kindness!

    Only one really fascinating plot
This cemetery does not offer the historical or botanical beauty of some other old Chicago cemeteries. What it does have is "Showman's Rest" a huge plot for circus performers, starting with the victims of a train wreck that killed about 60 people in 1918. It's worth a detour there just to visit this one grave site.

    It is a Grave Situation....
I don't really understand people's attraction to graveyards. Although in college, at Univ of Oregon, I had to walk thru a pioneer graveyard every morning to get to my classes. Think I made a few friends. However, if this is your thing, Woodlawn is most intriguing. Beautiful setting and lots of history there. It was established in 1912, and they support our Oak Park community with all manner of events and fund-raisers. It would seem they are the nation’s most famous, final resting spot for circus artists and host a related remembrance service each year during National Clown Week. It is worth an interesting and serene visit.
