Got our kicks

What a wonderful nod to the history of Route 66 in Illinois. I was most impressed with the cases with memorabilia from all the little towns 66 went through as well as the murals and VW van and one of a kind home on a bus. You can view at your leisure( it’s free but donations are accepted)There is an elevator onsite as there are three floors in the museum complex (plenty of free parking across the street.)

    A very eclectic museum.
This museum is a worthwhile stop for just about anyone interested in history. There is no fee. The greeter introduced us to the museum and then let us tour at our leisure. The first floor was about Rte 66. The 2nd floor was 1940s memorabilia, a Titanic room and a Civil War music room. The third floor was a military museum with tons of uniforms. The mural outside is beautiful also. There is also a car museum 1.5 blocks away.

Numerous Stories Within this 3-Story Building
Daughter and I stopped by this location as we were doing a Route 66 tour over the weekend. We decided to visit the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, since we were already stopping in Pontiac to view the Route 66 murals. The museum is housed in the old City Hall building, which has ~3 different floors with various things to see. While multistory, there’s an elevator to help those who cannot traverse the stairs. Admittance to the museum and hall of fame is completely free. The bottom floor has the Route 66 Hall of Fame portion, which has a vast collection of memorabilia from many different towns on the Illinois portion of historic Route 66. The collections are a little hodge-podge, but they are organized by the geographical locations along the route. A good variety of things to see, and most of the items are well-maintained. I was very impressed with the Bob Waldmire section, and it was really cool to see Bob’s old VW van and bus. Staff were very helpful and super friendly. Quick with a smile and a warm greeting as we walked into the Hall of Fame section. They helped provide some pamphlets for the rest of our trip and even gave us a free Route 66 pin (which my teenage daughter loved). Plenty of other souvenir options to buy as well.
