We took the 6 AM shuttle and it was well worth getting up! Some animals we saw was a bear, caribou, moose, and snowshoe hares. Our bus driver Matt was amazing. He told us some many interesting facts and it’s lovely to see people so passionate about what they do. The rangers at the visitor center where helpful and they provided an easy, moderate, and hard hikes (we did all three in a few hours), and the four hour drive was picturesque. I would definitely recommend coming early and spending a few hours there. You can also go off grid and hike at your own convenience. Just wanted to also let people know that if you do buy tickets and have a later tour, BUY THEM IN ADVANCE. The park rangers make you go to the visitor center and print them out there, so make sure to get their early. Hope this helps, we had a wonderful time! See more..

Stepping back in time, this cemetery is not maintained and therefore it is more interesting. You can read most of the head stones but there is also a board with some of the history of some of the graves in the parking area. We were surprised by the number of woman and children thinking it would be mostly all men. Ages were varied but som very young, if you visit take time to read the board I read it after our visit to the cemetery but it may have been more useful reading it first. It is also the gateway to a wonderful waterfall. Well worth a visit. See more..

  29. 4.5 Bardy's Trail Rides - Day Tour (309 reviews)
    - It was good except when the dogs scared the eagles
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 2-3 hours Horseback Riding Tours
Bardy's Trail Rides - Day Tour image
We had a good time and this ride does take you back into where the Eagles are. It was fun watching the operator’s dogs go along too and chase the salmon in the river. However, once the dogs got to the Eagles, the dog ran at them and scared them up into the air. If you’re trying to get really close to the Eagles I would just recommend asking the owner if the dogs can stay back during the ride. If you don’t mind watching the Eagles fly up in the air, the dogs will help do just that. See more..
  30. 4.5 Talkeetna Historical Society Museum (300 reviews)
    - What a gem
    History Museums
    Talkeetna Historical Society Museum image
We had seen the little museum as we walked around the town and decided it would be a good thing to do the next day which was forecast to be rainy. We are so glad we did. The woman at the desk was friendly and inviting and explained there were several films to see in the various parts of the museum. There are also several small cabins around town that are part of the museum which were actual living quarters of early residents. Besides all the locally collected artifacts in the museum which include everything from housewares to sleds to climbing equipment, there were two videos. One was on the building of the Alaska Railway and the other on climbing Denali. Both were well done and informative. If you want to get a feel for an Alaskan settlement and the lure and exploration of this wilderness area, this little gem of a museum should appeal. See more..

  34. 4.5 The Solomon Gulch Hatchery (279 reviews)
    - Very Nice

    The Solomon Gulch Hatchery image
VFDA built the Solomon Gulch Hatchery (SGH) in 1981, and released its first pink salmon fry in 1982. It has operated consistently since then. The water for the hatchery is provided by the Solomon Gulch Hydroelectric Plant, owned by the Copper Valley Electric Association through a cooperative agreement. VFDA employs a hatchery crew of twelve full and part-time employees, and is directed by Hatchery Manager Rob Unger. Other staff includes an assistant manager, fish culturists, maintenance support staff, and night watchmen. The hatchery staff lives in the Valdez community. SGH has a permitted green egg capacity to incubate 230 million pink salmon and 2 million coho salmon each year. These egg capacities are strictly controlled by the State of Alaska. With this capacity, VFDA achieves annual releases of approximately 218 million pink salmon fry, and 1.75 million coho salmon smolt. Egg take or spawning happens in late summer. Hatchery staff may spawn as many as 16,000 adult brood stock each day. These fish return to the hatchery spawning building by entering the facility using a fish ladder, which carry the fish from salt water to raceways on shore. Over the winter, the hatchery staff tends to the eggs as they hatch into alevin and settle into simulated gravel to subsist from their yolk sacs. In early spring, the fry emerge and are ready to go to sea. VFDA pumps the fry to net pens off shore where they are fed using commercial salmon feeds until they reach a target weight of at least 0.5 grams. From there, the smolts are released to complete their life cycle in the open sea. This process is known as ocean ranching. The adults, which average about 3.5 pounds each, return the following summer, and the process starts all over again. Average adult returns to the hatchery are approximately 13 million adult pink, and 160,000 coho salmon. After harvesting a small percentage of the return for cost recovery and brood stock, the remainder is harvested primarily by the commerci... See more..

    - Hidden treasure at the end of the trail
    Hiking Trails
    Byron Glacier Trail image
Easy trail the has a great reward at the end of it. If you aren’t very outdoorsy or not sure on how to navigate in the wild, it won’t matter because this trail is very easy to navigate. Just be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and bring the usual necessities such as water/ snacks etc. We went in November and were really glad we brought the shoe spikes. Once you get to the trail end, just follow the valley as it bends to the left and you will literally walk into the glacial ice caves. Not a bad way to spend a morning. One of the best hikes we had on our trip, definitely recommend that you make this part of your itinerary. See more..

    - Reid Falls needs a better promoter
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Lower Reid Falls image
My wife and I visited Skagway on May 25, 2022. It was a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures in the mid 60s. We walked from downtown toward Reid Falls and the cemetery over a 2 mile walk in direct sunlight. By the time we reached our destination, we were a little dusty and hot. We entered the cool woods and took the trail to the falls. In a couple of minutes our walk in the sun was forgotten. This waterfall is awesome. It is easily over 100 feet from top to bottom and is a series of falls. You can get right next to it for a great photo. Reid Falls should be on your must do list for Skagway, just below the train ride to White Pass Summit and The Historic Park. The cemetery pales in comparison to Reid Falls. And if you are not energetic enough to walk 5 miles round trip, you can ride a city bus out and back from Downtown Skagway. See more..

    Savage River Loop Trail image
Probably my favorite hike (out of the ones we did) in Denali. We didn't do the Healy overlook because we were still sore from another hike a few days prior, and the reviews on that showed it was a really tough hike. The Savage river loop is at Mile 15. You can take the park's busses (free) to be dropped off or if you have your own car. We had a car so we drove down. Lots of security down there, as it's the last stop before you go into wilderness so they want eveyone to be safe. The loop is in a valley, no views of Denali, but still a great hike. Don't think it's too strenous, if you don't want it to be. People were walking around and up hills, etc so you can wander around into the wilderness. Beware of wildlife of course. It was a bit windy since we were in the valley so I had my rain jacket (it was also raining while we were there) and some ear muffs. The gloves came in handy too! Really enjoyed the views, and the sound of water See more..

    - Very nice

We had a beautiful evening walking along the waterfront, all the way from the Iditarod zero mile marker to the small boat harbor. There are tent and RV sites along the way, and since we visited during COVID, it wasn't crowded. There are also interesting little things to see, such as a Japanese pavilion, Iditarod statues, and a flower garden. See more..
