Fascinating gold mine history
We drove up Hatcher Pass to see the Independence Mine not really knowing what to expect. It was very fascinating and interesting to wander around the gold mine town and see all of the old buildings which were all labeled with great placard information talking about the history of the gold mining era. It was raining the entire time we were wandering around but it’s definitely a fascinating place that we would recommend taking the time to drive to and spend some time exploring the area.

Informative walk
We needed to fill time before our 2 pm glacier walk and this was the perfect stop. Spent about an hour walking the paved trail and exploring some buildings on our own. There is tour that will provide you inside access to some of the locked buildings, but there are plenty of signs to education you along the way. It was amazing to see and learn about the early miners and their working conditions. We did not feel we missed out by not taking the tour. Driving to the park was easy and roads were well maintained. Drove to the park via Wasilla and exited via Palmer. Would recommend making a stop.
