Good idea to have this museum in the middle of the city
This is very good place for every tourist coming to Alaska. It's located in the federal building. It's relatively small exhibition, but has all essence of what you can expect in Alaska. They show the most important facts about the state and about the wildlife you may see on your way. There is also about 25 minutes movie about earthquake in 1964, you can watch in the theater which is in the same building. Location is so convenient and...it's FREE! I recommend this place. You'll be checked before you enter this building(because it's federal property). RomanP

Be prepared for a thorough security check before entry.
The exhibits and films are very educational, and the place is lovely and filled with information. There are restrooms and this is a great place to spend several hours if the weather is uncooperative. But be prepared for a thorough security check before entering. And do not even think you can bring that Alaskan Ulu souvenir knife you just bought in. The guards were not friendly and I felt sorry for many of the tourists who were invited in by the welcoming sign outside, then needed to remove shoes, coats, and have their bags searched.
