4.0Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum(287 reviews) - Living History in a Restored Mansion Sunday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Architectural Buildings
Our tour of Ventfort Hall was wonderful. Our guide was quite knowledgeable and was able to answer all questions from our group. She gave us the background of how the building was used for The Cider House Rules and gave us a terrific account of the history of the home, its connection to Robert Gould Shaw, and those who lived there. The before and after pictures bring it all into perspective. What an undertaking to restore this remarkable home!See more..

5.0Phillips House(143 reviews) - Step inside and set back the clock a hundred years! Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
Phillips House is the only home on historic Chestnut Street open to the public, and it provides a glimpse into the private world of the Phillips family during the early decades of the twentieth century. The kitchen, pantry, and a domestic staff bedroom, present a rarely seen picture of how the great houses functioned as new technologies were being introduced.See more..
A highlight of Salem - the Ropes Mansion is a beautifully preserved 18th century home with a rich history. It is owned by the Peabody Essex Museum and is perhaps best known for its role in Hocus Pocus. The tour is free and at your own pace - when we were there they were open on weekends only. You can also tour the garden. This is one of the few of Salem's many historic homes that you can actually see inside!See more..

MIT Stata Center is one of the signature buildings in MIT. It’s an amazing and interesting architecture covered with lots of irregularly shaped mirrors. People love to play with their reflections and take funny photos. 4.5Gropius House(62 reviews) - Fascinating tour Sunday: 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
This minimalist masterpiece was built by the founder of the Bauhaus movement. Walter Gropius, founder of the German design school known as the Bauhaus, was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Modest in scale, the 1938 Gropius home was revolutionary in impact. It combined the traditional elements of New England architecture -- wood, brick, and fieldstone -- with innovative materials rarely used in domestic settings at that time -- glass block, acoustical plaster, and chrome banisters, along with the latest technology in fixtures. In keeping with Bauhaus philosophy, every aspect of the house and its surrounding landscape was planned for maximum efficiency and simplicity of design. The house contains an important collection of furniture designed by Marcel Breuer made in the Bauhaus workshops. With all the family possessions still in place, the house has an immediacy rarely found in house museums.See more..

5.0James Library & Center for the Arts(5 reviews) - Gem of the South Shore Spent 1-2 hours Art Galleries • Architectural Buildings • Libraries
I attended the Boston Cello Quartet (four cellists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra) concert at the James in October of 2015. What an amazing afternoon! The talent that this small arts nonprofit gets is incredible. Their concert hall has amazing acoustics and the audience (no more than 80 or 90 people) is very close to the musicians, making for an intimate, exciting concert. After the concert, the musicians did a signing and joined the audience in the art gallery for a reception. It was a great event. Well worth the $25 ticket price. I will certainly be going back to the James in the future!See more..
I dedicate this review to Us the Pink Jury. Judge Brown and the Great Court Officers and Staff at the Bristol county Superior court in Taunton. Justice was seen October 27th in Taunton. Thankyou all for a great experience. This historic building built in 1826 once jailed Lizzie Borden in the basement and has been a historical building since 1978. I was not happy about Jury duty, but If I was called to serve again in Taunton I would definitely serve again in this Historic building with all these wonderful people. See more..

5.0Rev. Daniel Putnam House(2 reviews) - Great historic site Spent 1-2 hours Architectural Buildings
The Putnam house and surrounding village were great to see. The main house has authentic set ups in every room; kitchen with giant sized brick fire place for cooking, child's room, bedroom and living area with authentic pieces from that time (1720's). There is a school house which my kids loved seeing. Also a farm museum with equipment from that period. There is a look out tower in one of the buildings with minutemen clothing on display. I had to call for a tour but it was well worth it. Opens in late spring and into the Fall. Not crowded. Nice grounds and beautiful town. We went to Ryer's store after for ice cream, located on the other side of the commons. Very cool old country store with tons of antiques.See more..
5.0Old Sawyer House(1 review) - A LOOK BACK AT COLONIAL TIMES Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings This colonial home was built circa 1750 and the residence of Dr. Aaron Sawyer and his descendants until 1909. It was purchased and maintained by the Merrimac Town Improvement Society. Any lover of historical homes will appreciate this gem and be thankful it has been preserved. The resident long-time caretaker Joe is a font of knowledge about the Sawyer House and enthusiastically shares his stories with visitors. There are no formal visiting hours but Joe is always ready to show you around. We arrived unannounced and were treated to an hour presentation of the home. There is so much to see including a donated barn loom which dates to 1675! There is a rose garden and an herb garden out front and a shaded walking trail out back. There is also a one-room schoolhouse beside the home: the Landing School dates back to 1857. We were especially enthralled by the diaries which chronicled important dates in the Sawyer family and were found in the family library collection.See more..
5.0Oakes Ames Memorial Hall(1 review) - Oakes Ames Memorial Hall, for Architectural buffs Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
This is a very good example of Richardson Romantic architecture, featuring elephant columns, gables, stone, shingle, art glass, gargoyle and fantasy animals. Built by the owner of the Ames shovel fortune, who decided to invest in the companies that utilized shovels, such as railroads and mines. His fortune paid for the Memorial Hall, the Free Library, and the Gatehouse, and the train station, which is now a museum. Pre-arrange a guided tour of all of these buildings, and be swept back in time.See more..
