4.5Old North Church & Historic Site(3.098 reviews) - One by land two by sea Sunday: 12:30 PM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Built in 1723, Old North Church is Boston’s oldest surviving church building and an icon of the American Revolution. Old North is famous for the events of April 18, 1775, when allies of Paul Revere secretly climbed the steeple and held high two lanterns as a signal that British forces were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River and not by land. This daring act ignited the Revolution. $5 admission includes a self-guided tour through the church, with staff available to answer questions. Visitors can also take add-on tours of the church's crypt, gallery, and bell ringing chamber for $5 each. Old North's beautiful campus is also home to two gift shops and the Printing Office of Edes & Gill, which offers free colonial printing demonstrations.See more..
This is an absolutely beautiful church. Built by the French Canadian immigrants that settled in New Bedford, this church is a tribute to that local heritage and a gift to those who visit.See more..
4.0First Parish Church(46 reviews) - See this and get a guide! Churches & Cathedrals
This was the first place we visited in Plymouth and it kind of set the tone for the rest of our history tour. We hired a guide who took us through the church and told us the history and explained the many plaques and windows. It is beautiful inside - Arts and Crafts interior, Norman exterior. Lots of beautiful Tiffany glass and beautiful wood. A must see and our guide really helped me understand the history of the place we would be for the next week.See more..
4.5Old Stone Church(26 reviews) - Beautiful old church Churches & Cathedrals
Beautiful old church part of the old West Boylston town now under the Wachusett reservoir. I believe it was restored in the 70's with a new roof and structural repairs. The reservoir is beautiful and nice to walk around. Great for a stretch your legs or a nice day picnic. Always a nice place to see.See more..
I originally went there to pay my respects to my six times great grandfather Joseph Prince (the blind preacher) who is buried in the crypt along with his lifelong friends George Whitefield and Reverend Parsons. The tour was absolutely amazing. We learned so much about Whitefield and his ministry. Our tour guide Jerry did such a great job and was so informative and knowledgeable and did such a great job. We all agreed it was one of the best tours we had ever been on. I highly recommend anyone traveling to New England add this tour to their list.See more..

4.0The Fellowship Church(4 reviews) - Bible Believin' Churches & Cathedrals We've been attending for about a year now and really enjoy the family of believers here. Yes, the building is beautiful. Yes, they have programs and studies for all ages. And yes, they are a Bible believing church (the whole Bible and nothing but the Bible!). But the best thing about The Fellowship is the people. Just like anywhere, you get out what you put in. But they try to make sure that visitors don't get lost in the bustle and they try to get everyone plugged in to a group that will work for them. This is not a charismatic church, so you won't see a lot of arms held high or hear a bunch of Amens! But neither would folks look askance at you if you did that.See more..

My husband and I are new to the area and have been visiting churches from Rye to Amesbury, NH. No matter where one is on their life's journey, they are welcome here! Whether you are a summer visitor when you are in the area or a local who attends each Sunday, there is always someone to greet you and make you glad you came. 5.0Medway Community Church(1 review) - Historical and alive community Sunday: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Churches & Cathedrals
The church building is a historical architectural representation of the community created on October 4, 1750. It is a very typical for Massachusetts in terms of foundation and development, but in this case the community has been alive for 200 years and has not become an empty building or a club that departed from original purpose. Life of the community is well connected with local surroundings and follows the yearly cycle of holidays and traditional events (for Easter, Christmas etc.).See more..
Heading down US-1 to Newburyport, I passed through Salisbury. The cupola in place of a conventional pointed spire caught my eye. I stopped to take in all the architectural details of this church. This congregation has a long history. It’s the result of the Congregationalists, who dated back to 1640, voting in 1833 to unite with the Methodists, who dated back to 1811 in the area. Together they built the present church known as East Parish United Methodist Church in 1834. With its balanced symmetry of the Federal style which includes matching fans over the two windows in the front and another fan above in center for ventilation, it is a classic New England white clapboard church with some interesting features. The clock was added in 1897. It was a gift; and, the clock has lettering that spells out MEMORIAL GIFT where numbers would normally be. That is something unique that I’ve never seen before. Another interesting feature is the rounded cupola-type steeple which adds a Georgian style touch. The railing around it gives the cupola a widow’s walk look. It's topped off with a weathervane. For its classic Federal styling and several distinctive features, I rate East Parish United Methodist Church at 4.50 and can recommend stopping by to admire it. 4.0Amesbury Friends Meeting House(1 review) - QUAKER MEETING HOUSE WHERE JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER WORSHIPPED Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
After visiting Amesbury Town Park, I doubled back to the Amesbury Friends Meeting House which I’d spotted earlier. It was built in 1850 in the Greek Revival style. It is a 1½ story wood-frame building with clapboards and a gabled roof. It is well-preserved. Research revealed that poet John Greenleaf Whittier had something to do with the construction of the meeting house. Since he lived nearby, it’s logical that he worshiped there. The meeting house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I rate the Amesbury Friends Meeting House at 4.0. 4.0Market Street Baptist Church(1 review) - CHURCH WITH SOME DISTINCTIVE ITALIANATE FEATURES Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
I found the Market Street Baptist Church across the street from Madeline’s Antiques & Collectibles. It was a nice piece of architecture. The tall narrow windows with rounded tops and the double window in front are the marks of Italianate architecture. The front of the building has an unusual shape with the two angled sections on either side of the front entrance. The bracketed roof, millwork trim, and detailed carpentry add to the beauty and style of the building. Another architecture fan happened to came along while I was there. We discussed several of the architectural features. We both rated Market Street Baptist Church at 4.25. 5.0Ascension Memorial Church(1 review) - Beautiful Church with friendly rector and parishioners Churches & Cathedrals
Ascension Memorial Church is a parish community small enough to be known by name yet large enough to offer a variety of programs designed to engage and stir hearts and minds of all ages. Its parishioners are kind, questioning and inclusive mixture of people seeking to live our lives in wholehearted response to the curious love God has for us in Christ Jesus. AMC's tradition is Episcopal, which means we are both reformed and catholic. By creatively weaving tradition and change together, the church is both grounded in traditional Christianity and open to new ways of discerning, expressing, and practicing our faith. The community is more than receptive to the gifts that newcomers bring to our life together. These gifts are valued and essential in allowing the Ascension community to evolve in ever new and unexpected way. Enjoy the beautiful music and choir at 10:15 services.See more..
Bethany Congregational Church is one of the historic congregations in Quincy. It was established in1832. The building we see today is in the Gothic Revival style. It was designed and built in 1927. There were two things about this church façade that I found interesting. The first was the large multi-sectioned stained glass window above the entrance. The second was square tower that was off-center and had pinnacles instead of a steeple. To me, it had the appearance of a small cathedral. It is on the National Register of Historic places. I rate The Houghs Neck Congregational Church at 4.50. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
Heading down Pleasant Street, I came to the church of the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist. It was a fine example of Federal architecture from the perfect symmetry and decorative moldings above the tops of the front doors to the fanlight windows above the front door and tall narrow double-hung windows as well as up on the tower. The decorative column-like moldings on the front of the building and the pinnacles on the tower add more to style. The bracketing on the rooflines adds to the building’s attractiveness besides providing reinforced support for the roof, tower, and steeple. That’s another feature I like seeing on historic buildings. What I liked best about this building was all the detailed carpentry on the two stages of the tower just below the steeple. Great workmanship! The congregation was founded in 1725. The church was built in 1801. The parish hall was built in 1873 in a style consistent with the church. Like many other buildings in Newburyport, this church is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Houghs Neck Congregational Church congregation dates back to the early 1880’s as nondenominational. Construction of the building we see today began in November 1931 with much volunteer labor. The church was dedicated on Easter Sunday in April 1932. The nave and second floor were added later. The new sanctuary was dedicated on December 29, 1940. In subsequent years, stained glass windows and an electronic organ were added. Other improvements have been made. The church bell is visible in the open belfry. The red door suggests a welcoming atmosphere inside. Red doors were an early American symbol for hospitality. The façade of church appears to be Quincy granite. The stone front gives it the look of a stone church in the English countryside. I think this pretty church with a slightly quaint look fits in well with the Houghs Neck section of Quincy as that area has a casual beach town character. I rate The Houghs Neck Congregational Church at 4.25. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
The Most Blessed Sacrament Church dates back to 1915. This multi-gabled stone church has a large pointed Gothic-style, honeycomb-pattern stained glass window above the entryway. The vestibule on the front of the building has some detailed carpentry above the entry door that’s indicative of the Stick style of architecture. The reddish color paint on the wood trim of the church stands out against the lighter-color stone, although there are some stones that the paint closely matches. There are two statues on the grounds. One statue depicts the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus with his arms outstretched and palms upward in an ancient position for prayer. The other statue is of Mary, the Blessed Mother. She is wearing blue which is a common color for her clothing. I liked both of them. Overall, I think it’s a pretty church. Whenever I pass this church en route to a friend’s house, I know I’m in the final stretch of my drive to my destination on Hough’s Neck. It’s become an almost-there landmark for me. When traveling Sea Street in the Adams Shore or Hough Neck sections, it’s worth a look. I rate Most Blessed Sacrament Church at 4.25. 4.0Immaculate Conception Church(1 review) - VICTORIAN GOTHIC CHURCH WITH INTERESTING MASONRY DETAIL Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
The Immaculate Conception Church was the first Catholic church built in the area around Newburyport. The current building was built in the Victorian Gothic style. It was complete in 1853. The existing spire and a second one were added in 1873. The second spire was lost in a fire in 1945. I particularly liked and admired the trinity windows over the right side door and above all the side windows as well as the three-sectioned window over the center door. I thought that the white masonry trim – most likely marble – around the doors and windows added to the appearance of the building. In all, I think the building is an attractive piece of architecture. I rate the Immaculate Conception Church at 4.25 and can recommend a visit to those who appreciate architecture. 4.0Belleville Congregational Church(1 review) - GREAT EXAMPLE OF ROMANESQUE REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
Driving down High Street to cut over to another area of Newburyport, I came to Belleville Congregational Church. This church is truly a stunning piece of architecture. I wasn’t expecting to see a church like this in a community with a population under 20,000. I parked and got out of my car to take in all its architectural features. As I was admiring it and thinking the word stunning, a local woman came by and said she always marveled at it because it was such a stunning piece of architecture --- my thought exactly. She liked the same features that caught my attention --- the two tall towers, a clock, two belfries, a large round windows, and several round-top stained glass windows. I learned that the roots of this congregation date back to 1761. It has had its struggles over the years. Its second building was destroyed in a bad storm. A third church was destroyed by fire. This fourth structure was built in 1867. And, it is a beautiful church. From its architectural lines and features, I identified it as being Romanesque Revival style which was popular in the 1850’s and 1860’s. The Fiske Chapel beside h church is in the Greek Revival style. I thought the two styles blended pretty well together. I rate Belleville Congregational Church at 4.50. It didn’t quite make a 5.0 because it was not a large cathedral. But, for a smaller church, it’s still very noteworthy and worth a visit.
