    Fort Taber Park image
Unfortunately, the Fort itself was closed when we visited but the stroll in the park was worth the time. Great views and the environment evokes tranquil and somewhat isolated feelings when visitors are sparse on the peninsula during the fall. Obviously chilly and super windy on the ocean front. Also not much shade so dress accordingly. See more..

We passed the Custom House Maritime Museum several times while walking through Newburyport, and it doesn't look like much from the outside. But it's exploding with interesting artifacts and displays about the history of this city, once the fourth largest in the nation. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and it was clear that they appreciated our visit and our interest in the Museum and Newburyport. They were brimming with knowledge about Newburyport and the exhibits, so don't hesitate to ask about any- and everything. See more..

It's a great stop on the way to Salem. This museum houses the original "Spirit of 76" (known as Yankee Doodle) painting by Archibald M. Willard. It has been in Marblehead since 1880 after being purchased by General Devereux. The drummer boy in the picture was modeled after his son. It's all very interesting history. The ship bells from the 2nd and 3rd USS Marbleheads are on display as you first walk into the building. To the left is the the Selectmen's Room. This is where you'll find the painting and the original Marblehead 1684 deed of purchase. There are many displays and a gift shop. The building itself is very historical. The drive though Marblehead and the shoreline shouldn't be missed. It's a beautiful town. See more..

What a great place! A little hard to find. tucked away in a bigger building, and they are not allowed to put up a big sign. It's small, just a couple rooms, but has lots of interesting exhibits from WWI up to the 1st Gulf War. Helmets, uniforms, medical field equipment, communications equipment, examples of ammunition and weapons. Our very knowledgeable tour guide Jim did a great job explaining things and answering questions. Interesting nugget of information: Colin Powell trained at Fort Devens! This is also the 105th anniversary of Fort Devens. We spent an hour and a half there and were very impressed. Free but they happily accept donations. See more..
