Abbot Hall Maritime Museum, Massachusetts, United States

Very interesting and free to the public

It's a great stop on the way to Salem. This museum houses the original "Spirit of 76" (known as Yankee Doodle) painting by Archibald M. Willard. It has been in Marblehead since 1880 after being purchased by General Devereux. The drummer boy in the picture was modeled after his son. It's all very interesting history. The ship bells from the 2nd and 3rd USS Marbleheads are on display as you first walk into the building. To the left is the the Selectmen's Room. This is where you'll find the painting and the original Marblehead 1684 deed of purchase. There are many displays and a gift shop. The building itself is very historical. The drive though Marblehead and the shoreline shouldn't be missed. It's a beautiful town.

Don't miss this if interested in Marblehead history
Iconic Marblehead building with a beautiful clock tower. Hard to miss. As mentioned by Marblehead visitor guides, do stop here before you explore the town (on foot). We were able to park here (free) but space is definitely limited. The inside is a small museum itself (also free), where you can learn a lot about the history of Marblehead. You can easily spend 30 minutes here if you're interested to know a little about all the history. Just think that Marblehead is the birthplace of the American Navy and that the Navy has more history in connection with Marblehead than in any other place in the US - that might spark some interest. Plus, the original Spirit of 76 painting is here! We weren't able to climb up the clock tower, we didn't know if it was open to the public or not. You can pick up visitor brochures about Marblehead also.

    Small but essential for visitors
If you go to Marblehead you should complete your itinerary going here. Abbot Hall has much to see on their first floor. Both the Maritime museum and the room full of historic portraits and other historic items.
