Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum image
The Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library & Museum was established in 1920, when Massachusetts Governor and Vice-President Elect Calvin Coolidge began giving documents and memorabilia to Forbes Library, the public library for the city of Northampton, Massachusetts. During his Presidency and upon leaving the White House, additional materials were added including the Howard Chandler Christy portraits of Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace, and the infamous electric exercise horse. In 1956, acting upon the request of Grace Coolidge and Trustees of Forbes Library, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted funds to establish a “Calvin Coolidge Memorial Room” as a separate entity within the Forbes Library. Today, the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library & Museum at Forbes Library is the largest existing source of primary material on Calvin Coolidge and the only public library in the United States to hold a presidential collection. It's a great stop on the way to Salem. This museum houses the original "Spirit of 76" (known as Yankee Doodle) painting by Archibald M. Willard. It has been in Marblehead since 1880 after being purchased by General Devereux. The drummer boy in the picture was modeled after his son. It's all very interesting history. The ship bells from the 2nd and 3rd USS Marbleheads are on display as you first walk into the building. To the left is the the Selectmen's Room. This is where you'll find the painting and the original Marblehead 1684 deed of purchase. There are many displays and a gift shop. The building itself is very historical. The drive though Marblehead and the shoreline shouldn't be missed. It's a beautiful town. See more..

Besides the knowledgable staff, one can take their time enjoying the 19th century artwork, before going to the gallery behind the house, where modern artists and the artists in residence display their work. There is a lovely park dedicated to Whistler adjacent to the building. See more..
