Silent Cal has a lot to say!

The Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library & Museum was established in 1920, when Massachusetts Governor and Vice-President Elect Calvin Coolidge began giving documents and memorabilia to Forbes Library, the public library for the city of Northampton, Massachusetts. During his Presidency and upon leaving the White House, additional materials were added including the Howard Chandler Christy portraits of Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace, and the infamous electric exercise horse. In 1956, acting upon the request of Grace Coolidge and Trustees of Forbes Library, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted funds to establish a “Calvin Coolidge Memorial Room” as a separate entity within the Forbes Library. Today, the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library & Museum at Forbes Library is the largest existing source of primary material on Calvin Coolidge and the only public library in the United States to hold a presidential collection.

    Stay Cool with Coolidge
You'll find the museum located in the Forbes Library by Smith's campus. The museum itself consists of one room with exhibits about the Life of President Coolidge. The staff was incredibly helpful and eager to discuss all things Coolidge. The woman I talked to was quite humorous and you can tell she enjoys talking to visitors. Among the more interesting artifacts were the head dress given to the President by the Sioux, giving Coolidge the name "Chief Leading Eagle." There's also a scalping hatchet. Touring the museum room should take less than an hour. It's a great way to learn about Northampton's most famous adopted son.

    Less is More Achieved
Small but well done, and well located in an architecturally appealing city. I would say quaint but I used that to describe the much larger Woodrow Wilson library. I particularly liked looking through the shelves of books that were Coolidge's during his White House days. I would like to return to tour the City of Northampton MA in future.
