VISITING THE "REAL" SITE IS SO MUCH BETTER IN PERSON
A "MUST"" FOR EVERY AMERICAN, especially during this election year--at a time when "American values" are touted by one and all -yet so many Americans have grown up without any sound grounding in the "facts" of our national history. Here is Plymouth, cradle of the 1st English settlements. Our small group of friends had such an exciting sidetrip here after business trip to Boston. Plymouth is a lovely small seaside town, where every street carries name of a "Mayflower Pilgrim" or is site of a special piece of US history. Wow. This is a great stop for adults who love history and also want a fun and relaxing walk around-- Young families may find all the walking adventurous.. Unlike Disneyland, Plymouth has nature's backdrop -the ocean, sand, beaches, wharves and then there is the history. Take a walking tour--up and down the hills, stopping at monuments of Mayflower Rock, the of church, museums with relics of the "real" Pilgrims. Here at the Mayflower Society House and Library, the house has a lovely museum and garden as well as the 1st class archives; the library is really impressive, see if your family has a Mayflower link..... Plymouth sites make you proud to see what this modest little group of English emigrants stubbornly lived through to survive. The cemetery also is a "must" as well and there are lots of stories available on the tours or in the tour books about the individual families that made the long sea voyage here only to perish the 1st winter or soon thereafter. Plymouth holds keys to earliest American values, so commercialized now in popular media. Next, have a lobster roll, or some fried clams, reflect a bit and have a quiet look at the small beginnings of the American story that began at this location.

    This was an unexpected gem
I ended up going on the tour of the house rather tahn at the Library which I had intended. The tour is Free to Mayflower Society members and reasonable for others. It was a biyt an hour and quite informative. A bed belonging to Mayflower Richard Warren was an unexpected surprise. The entrance fee included a very nice infomrative full color booklet. Very Nice and probably less popular than many other tours. I loved this.
