Step inside and set back the clock a hundred years!

Phillips House is the only home on historic Chestnut Street open to the public, and it provides a glimpse into the private world of the Phillips family during the early decades of the twentieth century. The kitchen, pantry, and a domestic staff bedroom, present a rarely seen picture of how the great houses functioned as new technologies were being introduced.

    Such an interesting house!
This is a beautiful example of a wealthy family's home in the early 1900s. It is full of interesting artifacts and great stories. There are stunning carpets, dishware, paintings and furniture. The carriage house has the family's old cars and some carriages.

Knowledgable and charming staff brings a lovely old house to life!
My partner and I visited this wonderful old house while vacationing on Massachusetts's North Shore in August. No one famous ever lived lived there- just a well-to-do family during the first half of the 20th century. Our two guides- one for the garage and cars and another for the house itself were delightful, informative and had a wonderful ability to make us feel we knew the family- just a little bit- that once lived there. Their anecdotes helped us to appreciate what life must have been like at that time and place. The house is remarkably well restored with all of the original furnishings and fixtures. I don't ever recall touring another historic old home where it seemed as if the residents had only just stepped out for the day, and in their absence, we were being given a special peek inside. The dining room table was set for dinner guests, who would be arriving later that evening, and we had the opportunity to glimpse the menu the family cook was preparing. I was even given a recipe of the evening's desert- something called Orange Fairy Fluff, a citrus-y custard concoction that I have tried and look forward to making again. It's delicious, just like our afternoon spent at the Phillips's. This place is not to be missed whenever you're in the neighborhood.
