Fascinating mansion and grounds very close to downtown Waltham

Gore Place is a 50-acre country estate in the city, a grand mansion steeped in history, a working farm, and an invaluable community resource. The Gores built their home in 1806. With the help of a Parisian architect, Rebecca planned the Federal-style mansion — a rare opportunity for a woman of the time. The Gores filled the house with locally made furniture and beautiful art, much of which remains in place today. Gore Place is located at 52 Gore St. in Waltham, just nine miles from the heart of Boston. The grounds are open to the public as a community resource. Tours: Monday through Friday on the hour at 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, and 2 pm Saturdays on the hour at 12, 1, 2, and 3 pm Sundays: Closed

A hidden treasure in Waltham, Mass
The style of this house was incredible. This is a Federal Period home of Massachusetts Governor, Christopher Gore. The home is filled with antique furnishings and paintings. The tours are given each day at 1:00. One tip is that you can get free tickets for the tour at the Waltham and Watertown Library. There is also a small discount if you have an AARP card or AAA. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful and there is a working farm on the grounds. The farm has chickens, goats, pigs, and a llama. There is also an organic farm stand for vegetables and you can purchase plants. There are benches all around the property so you can sit and relax. The fellow giving the tour was excellent and gave us a wealth of information to carry home with us. There are many stairs in the house leading to the bedrooms so if that is a problem for anyone, it is important to note. I would recommend visiting this hidden treasure in Waltham and taking the tour is a must!

    Open Mondays
Okay, so it is Monday and just about every other site/museum is closed (still don’t understand that tradition). You won’t go wrong coming out to Gore Place. It is a massive mansion with a few unique twists. Stairways are steep and slender as they are in most homes built back in the day. There is also no air conditioning, but we were there on a warm July morning and did not find it unbearable (they have electric fans in all the main rooms). The docent was very knowledgeable and was willing to focus the talk on the family more than the architectural details. It is a one hour tour, so plan to be there 60-75 minutes.
