A Floating World War II Experience
Having grown up in the Fore River area as a kid I have been talking about visiting the uss Salem for years. I had a great trip with my 10 year old grandson who is a real maritime buff and we had a blast. Having visited Battleship Cove in Fall River many times, this one ship had more to offer. First, you have access to the complete ship. Every bulkhead, the bridge and three levels of the engine room was open for touring. The museum level of the ship was extensive. We have traveled to Washington for a week with our grandson and visited all the Smithsonian exhibits and the volume and quality of the archives was incredible. There were two “ experienced” volunteers along with two high school aged volunteers that were extremely generous with their time and knowledge. I’m disheartened to know that the Fore River Shipyard’s historical contributions to our country warrant a standing museum building on the property. But the archives and history on the USS Salem is a treasure. Only heavy cruiser still afloat in the world. That says it all. A must visit.

Great museum ship for naval history buffs
What I enjoyed most about visiting the Salem was that so much of the ship is open, including the unique auto-loading main battery turret which is something that you can't see on any other museum ship. Staff and volunteers are extremely friendly, from the woman who sold us our tickets (veteran, kind, engaging) to the young man (history student) who volunteers on the ship who showed us some things off the main tour, including the forward plot room. Also, the ship is still very much in the state it was when it was put into mothballs in the 1970s - so it has a unique WW2 vibe with some modern touches. Can't recommend this enough.
