Fort Taber Park, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (142 reviews) Spent Ranking #6 in New Bedford Military Museums

Visited in the Fall

Unfortunately, the Fort itself was closed when we visited but the stroll in the park was worth the time. Great views and the environment evokes tranquil and somewhat isolated feelings when visitors are sparse on the peninsula during the fall. Obviously chilly and super windy on the ocean front. Also not much shade so dress accordingly.

    Beautiful views!
Amazing sea views and a nice and easy loop walk around the magnificent building. Great playground for kids and nice picnic place. Lots of parking. The only down side is during the off season (February) bathrooms are not accessible… plan accordingly!

SCENIC HISTORIC SITE OF TWO FORTS
Fort Taber Park was named for the original earthen fort that stood on Clark’s Point. During the American Civil War, it was built to protect New Bedford from 1861 to 1863 until Fort Rodman was completed enough to become the city's primary defense. Today, this city park is a scenic recreational park with trails for running, walking, and bicycling. There are also other attractions that include a fishing pier, a beach, a playground, and some picnic areas. The park is located where the Acushnet River flows into New Bedford Harbor. There is about a mile of oceanfront in this park. One will find panoramic views of the harbor and Buzzards Bay. There is free parking in several lots throughout the park. Most of the park is handicapped accessible. During our visit, we spent about an hour walking all around Fort Rodman, built 1857 – 1871. There was a fair amount of marine traffic at that time. We came upon some war memorials on the far side of the fort Clarks Point Light is located on top of Fort Rodman. The first structure was built in ‎1797. The stone tower was built in ‎1804. It was restored over the winter of 2000 and moved inside Fort Rodman in the spring. It was relit in 2001. Near the far end of the park is the Fort Taber-Fort Rodman Military Museum which is a separate attraction operated by a local historical society. We visited that later. We rate Fort Taber Park at 4.50. We highly recommend a visit. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.
