HISTORIC METHODIST CHURCH WITH DISTINCTIVE CLOCK
Heading down US-1 to Newburyport, I passed through Salisbury. The cupola in place of a conventional pointed spire caught my eye. I stopped to take in all the architectural details of this church. This congregation has a long history. It’s the result of the Congregationalists, who dated back to 1640, voting in 1833 to unite with the Methodists, who dated back to 1811 in the area. Together they built the present church known as East Parish United Methodist Church in 1834. With its balanced symmetry of the Federal style which includes matching fans over the two windows in the front and another fan above in center for ventilation, it is a classic New England white clapboard church with some interesting features. The clock was added in 1897. It was a gift; and, the clock has lettering that spells out MEMORIAL GIFT where numbers would normally be. That is something unique that I’ve never seen before. Another interesting feature is the rounded cupola-type steeple which adds a Georgian style touch. The railing around it gives the cupola a widow’s walk look. It's topped off with a weathervane. For its classic Federal styling and several distinctive features, I rate East Parish United Methodist Church at 4.50 and can recommend stopping by to admire it. The reason for the delay in submitting this review was due to a months-long loss of my ability to post photos with my reviews. If you found this review useful, please click HELPFUL.
