A LOOK BACK AT COLONIAL TIMES

This colonial home was built circa 1750 and the residence of Dr. Aaron Sawyer and his descendants until 1909. It was purchased and maintained by the Merrimac Town Improvement Society. Any lover of historical homes will appreciate this gem and be thankful it has been preserved. The resident long-time caretaker Joe is a font of knowledge about the Sawyer House and enthusiastically shares his stories with visitors. There are no formal visiting hours but Joe is always ready to show you around. We arrived unannounced and were treated to an hour presentation of the home. There is so much to see including a donated barn loom which dates to 1675! There is a rose garden and an herb garden out front and a shaded walking trail out back. There is also a one-room schoolhouse beside the home: the Landing School dates back to 1857. We were especially enthralled by the diaries which chronicled important dates in the Sawyer family and were found in the family library collection.
