Living History in a Restored Mansion

Our tour of Ventfort Hall was wonderful. Our guide was quite knowledgeable and was able to answer all questions from our group. She gave us the background of how the building was used for The Cider House Rules and gave us a terrific account of the history of the home, its connection to Robert Gould Shaw, and those who lived there. The before and after pictures bring it all into perspective. What an undertaking to restore this remarkable home!

    Just ok
I might be a little jaded from having toured a lot of magnificent houses, perhaps my expectations are too high. This house had no "wow" moments for me, I hardly took any pictures; it is still very much a work-in-progress. I think $18 per person was a little steep for what we got. Some of the rooms have almost not furniture, and most of the furniture that is there is not original. There are no gardens. I understand they're still working on the house, but this house is only worth a visit if you are already in the area. We combined it with a visit to the Naumkeag tulip and daffodil festival.
