Located on the banks of the Derwent a short ferry trip from Hobart, Mona is Australia’s largest private museum with three levels of underground galleries, which visitors explore with custom-built, handheld technology, called the O, that tells them about the artworks on display. - Cool
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • History Museums
    Mawson's Hut Replica Museum image
This true replica of the historic huts in Cape Denison - Antarctica - constructed in 1911 by the men of the Australian Antarctic Expedition, led by Dr Douglas Mawson. Constructed by heritage architects and builders, the replica was only made possible by a federal government grant and the generosity of many Tasmanian businesses and individuals who donated time, goods and goodwill. As a part of the Mawson's Huts Foundation, all profits are toward the conservation of the historic huts, located in Cape Denison, Antarctica. Run by staff and volunteers, it is a step back in time to the "Heroic age" of Antarctic exploration and gives you a fascinating insight into the life of these Antarctic pioneers. The museum is well set up for groups as well as individual visits. Private tours are available on request. We also have a wonderful gift shop with unique items. We look forward to welcoming you. ** Please note due to current COVID restrictions our opening hours may have changed ** See more..

  4. 4.5 House of Anvers Museum of Chocolate (520 reviews)
    - Yum!
Wednesday: 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
House of Anvers Museum of Chocolate image
Delicious chocolates and truffles, good coffee, and a nice glimpse into the workings of the factory. Despite the pouring rain our daughter had to have ice cream, and we found a quiet viewing platform out of the way for her to eat out of the downpour. Lots of people around - a very popular place. I would try to avoid the shop/tasting house if a bus group is in there, but that says more about the behaviour of people on bus tours than it does about the venue. Not a huge shop for when it’s crowded, but the chocolate is worth it! See more..

Definitely a hidden treasure, a convict-built home from 1838, with spectacular gardens that became one of the Colony's leading private schools until 1866. It was then privately owned until the National trust acquired it in the 1960's. It is fantastic that estates like this one are restored and preserved to reflect a time capsule of what life was really like in the early formation of Australia. It is not that far from Launceston and well worth the trip, the entrance fee is very minimal. Yes, a real hidden treasure. See more..

Pearns was also celebrating the Massey Ferguson tractor with a large number of tractors from across the era of the Massey Ferguson. Pearns has recognised that now everyone wants to look at vintage and veteran machinery and has developed themed displays on specific topics around the venue. It’s free to visit and the on site guide very informative, you then can self tour and walk around all the old generators, alternators, exciters and turbines. There’s also an interesting display of early electrical appliances. It’s a bit of a drive in on unsealed roads but they are well maintained and quite suitable for a standard or small road car. Water was the energy source, and to keep it coming, the company built water races and then a dam above the town. The inspectors said the dam would never fail. But in April 1929 it rained for five days straight, culminating in a final downpour of 5 inches in just two hours.
