The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is the most iconic & dominant landmark on Bruny Island. Nestled on the sea-cliff tops in the South Bruny National Park, at the southern tip of Bruny Island. Built from 1836 she sits proud, overlooking the craggy coastlines of Southern Tasmania. This is the southernmost lighthouse tour in Australia. The tours to the top operate daily. For just $15 you will hear stories of shipwrecks, convicts and how the lighthouse keepers performed their daily duties. Learn how the lighthouse was built and experience the wild ocean and sea cliff views from above. Cape Wickham Lighthouse image
Standing on the northerly most tip of the island this lighthouse is an impressive 48 metres tall and is anchored on a stone base that is 3.4 metres thick. The lighthouse keepers had to scale over 220 steps (11 flights of stairs) to get to the lamp at a minimum twice daily until the lighthouse was automated in 1918. The lighthouse was eventually built in response to multiple ship wrecks including the Neva which was wrecked in 1835 with the loss of 225 people, mainly convict women and children, and the Cataraqui in 1845 with the loss of 402 free settlers. This was Australia’s worst maritime disaster. We had some food and drink at the nearby Cape Wickham Golf Clubhouse - visitors welcome - where the view of the lighthouse framed by the golf course snaking along the coast was quite superb. Did the drive from Binalong Bay on a windy cool day. Road is half paved and half unpaved so takes a little while to get there but it was so worth the trip. It felt like the end of the world. No-one there when we arrived so we checked out the beautiful lighthouse then walked out to the amazing huge bay of fires boulders with that amazing red all over them with gorgeous little rock pools that were so blue. It was magical and a lovely place to take some gorgeous photos. Just wandered around for a while as the place was just so beautiful. Travelled for a month around Tassie and this place was probably one of my favourite. Very magical and well worth the drive. See more..

The entrance was found around 1815 and a beacon was installed at Cape Sorell around 1822. In 1891 a light was installed near the entrance and one assumes this became the lighthouse that exists today. It was powered by gas until 1977 and is now solar and battery powered. Pretty lighthouse and pick a nice sunny day and calm winds as it can get rough. See more..
