  4. 4.0 Dog Line (61 reviews)
    - Hounds of the Baskervilles?
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Dog Line image
The Dog Line was another sadistic method of controlling the convict population and preventing escape via the isthmus. Nine dogs guarded the 30m width of the neck, each of them tethered to a chain that allowed then to almost touch noses. The dogs were too vicious to allow convicts pass through and any sound or disturbance would trigger a frenzied response and alert the soldiers. The dogs were houses in old barrels. The sculpture of dog and barrel is a life size replica. See more..

    Geographical Centre Of Tasmania image
The key to finding this commemorative cairn is sighting it between the Bronte Lagoon Canal and A10/C173 junction. Much of the current literature detailing its position is otherwise incorrect. A commerative cairn of importance not only because it approximates the central geographical position of Tasmania, but because it also honors all of the early surveyors who mapped Tasmania. See more..

    - Requiem for roadkill in Tasmania
    Monuments & Statues
    Bitumen Bones Sculpture image
The number of animals killed on Tasmanian roads is considered the highest in Australia. The impact of roadkill attracts more and more attention, and public awareness is a considerable step toward mitigating roadkill. This sculpture by Alex Miles is of the Forest Raven (Corvus tasmanicus) – "often seen hopping along with the roadside scavenging roadkill remnants" (Miles), 2021) and can be seen as a requiem for roadkill, featuring the poem Wombat by Sarah Day, an Australian poet. The poem describes the death of a wombat, killed by a vehicle. See more..

  17. 4.5 Miners Siding (4 reviews)
    - Extraordinary Sculpture
    Monuments & Statues
    Miners Siding image
We regarded Miners Siding as an extraordinary sculpture sequence by Stephen Walker. It starts with the tableau, 'Miners Sunday', which depicts a miner and his family on the day of rest. The sculpture is bronze and Huon pine and stands central in a circular water basin. A narrow water feature flows from under the elevated platform, downhill to the rear of the sculpture. Small boulders with cast bronze plaques attached tell the story of Queenstown's rich mining history. An Atlas Copco Boomer H121 drilling rig is housed behind the platform, a visual presentation of the machine drilling at the mine site. Miners Siding was opened by the Governor of Tasmania on 15th October 1983. See more..

It was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. There is a Beersheba Centenary memorial directly behind this one which commemorates the Australian Light Horse and the young man from the region who served in it. - Tasmanian Reef

    Beaconsfield Miners Memorial image
Commemorating miners who worked at the local mine from 1887 to 1914 is this unusual memorial. This memorial is made up of relics from the pumping plant used at the gold mine in 1905. In 1879 Beaconsfield became known as the richest gold town in Tasmania. The gold mine closed in 1914 due to regular flooding of the shafts but re-opened in 1999 with mixed success. It's quite eye-catching and it will make you go 'hmmmm'...so it's probably worth a stop to have a look. See more..
  25. 4.5 The Wood Carvings Of Geeveston (2 reviews)
    - Cast in timber.
    Monuments & Statues
The Wood Carvings Of Geeveston image
These lovely timber sculptures are one of the first things we noticed when we arrived in town and headed to the parking area at the Visitor Centre. We learned that they were sculptures of local heroes and later we set about tracking them down. John Geeves, founder of Geeveston, and the fruitpicker, representing William Geeves who planted the first fruit orchard, are located beside the big log. Elsewhere in town we located the Heritage Couple, chemist Bill Trevaskis, doctor Oswald Kyle, police officer Jim Wotherspoon, milliner Jessica Hannabury, blacksmith Jim Hinchey and the wood cutter with crosscut saw inside the Visitor Centre. We didn't locate the sculpture of rower, Simon Burgess. A great tribute to local townsfolk and also reflecting the timber heritage of Geeveston. See more..

  29. 4.0 Troopers Thomas Barker & Geoffry Brown Memorial (2 reviews)
    - Remembering their fallen
    Monuments & Statues
Troopers Thomas Barker & Geoffry Brown Memorial image
This memorial caught my eye... I am sure many people walk past it thinking it's 'just' a war memorial...but there is a story on it that caught my eye. It's dedicated to two locals who lost their lives in the Boer War. What I found unusual is that dedication to those individuals... I have seen many memorials, but they are usually for the war... not for the individuals in the conflict. The monument, which is built of Malmsbury stone, is 6ft square at the base, and stands 16ft high. It has been dedicated to two of the locals that died for the Empire. Barker fought with the First Tasmanian Contingent and died at Deelfontein of enteric fever. Brown, of the Imperial Bushmen's Contingent, died of wounds received at Warmbaths. See more..

    - Greater love hath no man than this
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    War Memorial image
On 28th April 1921 the Examiner newspaper from Launceston reported that, " ...special services were held in the churches on Sunday, and Monday was observed as a strict holiday. Early in the afternoon people from all parts of the district began to assemble to witness the unveiling of the memorial monument erected for the fallen soldiers from Mole Creek. " The memorial is prominently located on the Main Street in Mole Creek... with a rather eye catching rock at it's base that has a poppy painted on it. Originally erected for the first war ... later it was updated for the second world war. It's easy to imagine what losing men would have meant to this small community. A humble place to remember that sacrifice. See more..

  37. 3.5 Mary Bogue's Grave (2 reviews)
    - "Great deeds are usually wrought at great risks." — Herodotus
    Monuments & Statues
    Mary Bogue's Grave image
I wonder what Mary would have made of this... would she have preferred to be buried with her people, or was she happy to be in a westerners grave. Either way... it's a beautiful reminder of a relationship between an indigenous person and a colonist. I have read of such relationships, but not seen a memorial for one. Her baby son and her died after a boat was capsized. These days there are information boards for us to read because the headstone has lost it's story over time. Stanley is an area that the Aboriginal people has survived and flourished for thousands of years. About thirty years after Mary's death... most had been removed. It's a part of Australia's history to not be proud of... but this grave reminds us that love could exist between the cultures. See more..

  50. 4.0 Bruen Waterwheel (1 review)
    - Bruen Waterwheel & Memorial
    Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Monuments & Statues
    Bruen Waterwheel image
A sign on one of the pillar supports states that waterwheel symbolises the Bruen Waterwheel completed in April 1880. It was 9.2m diameter, erected on the eastern slope of Cabbage Tree Hill and utilising water from a race was used to drive a 10 head stamper battery for crushing quartz. So successful that the battery was doubled and an additional waterwheel was installed in 1882 and, using tailwater from the first wheel, drove a separate 10 head stamper. Remarkable ingenuity. The remainder of the memorial consists of metal sheets with five local characters etched thereon. They are Todd Russell & Brant Webb, the last two men rescued from the underground mine in 2006; Tom Ah Sing, gold miner, market gardener & interpreter; William Daley, prospector, who discovered The Tasmania Reef outcropping on the surface of Cabbage Tree Hill in 1869 and Thomas Cook Just, publisher & editor of the Cornwall Chronicle, founder and MD of British Tasmanian Charcoal Iron Co at Beauty Point and in 1876 the Brandy Creek Quartz Gold Mining Co. He was later elected to parliament and was one of the guiding minds behind the Australian Federation. See more..
