You could easily spend a whole day here with lovely grassy areas for a picnic, a swimming pool, bush walks, playground, Cafe and of course the chairlift itself. I recommend doing the chairlift to see the grounds from a different perspective, it was $26 for a return adult trip and they offer kids prices as well. We saw wallabies and numerous peacocks and peahens, even managed to see some chicks. See more..

The Gorge Scenic Chairlift has been operating since 1972 and has become one of Tasmania’s premier tourist attractions. Situated approximately 1.5km from the city centre, we offer spectacular views of the Cataract Gorge and Basin. With a total span of 457m, our chairlift boasts the longest single span of any chairlift in the world (308m). There are two terminal stations. The main drive station is at Basin Road, West Launceston, near the main carpark and entrance, and the other is in Cataract Gorge and Cliff Grounds reserve. The chairlift travels over the huge naturally formed basin, filled by the waters of the South Esk River, at times surging down through the Cataract Gorge. Your gentle, safe and breathtaking journey will provide you with stunning views of the majestic dolerite cliffs of the Cataract Gorge, which was described by William Collins, of the ship Lady Nelson, as “a scene of natural beauty, probably not surpassed in the world". I arrived into stanley hoping to use the chairlift to get up to the nut. All signs said the place was open until I tried to get into the glass sliding door. Confused why it was not opening I went to the cafe. The lady at the cafe advised the chairlift closed last week and does at certain points of the year. I had read online it wanted payments at certain times of the year but hadn’t read it actually closed. So be aware so you don’t get caught out like me. Apparently it’s really impressive if you manage to get on. See more..
