  1. 4.5 Cascades Female Factory Historic Site (1.995 reviews) from $16.94
    - Confronting and informative history of the female convict story
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Cascades Female Factory Historic Site image
The World Heritage-listed Cascades Female Factory is Australia's most significant historic site associated with female convicts. At this site you can come to know the largely unknown history of over 6,000 women and girls that were transported to Van Diemen's Land and the some 2,000 babies that were born within the factory walls. Their stories are equally harrowing and inspiring. Interwoven with them are the First Nation’s stories of Palawa, a culture over 40,000 years old and which was so gravely impacted by British colonisation. Site entry includes a self-guided audio experience and access to the grounds and gallery. Additional tours run throughout the day include the Convict Women's History Tour and the acclaimed dramatised performance 'The Proud and the Punished.' See more..
  2. 4.5 Bicheno Blowhole (912 reviews)
    - That She Blows
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Bicheno Blowhole image
We drove back to the eastern shore, below Waub's Harbour, to checkout the Bicheno Blowhole, whose reputation is underwhelming. No such problems today as the tide was full, the wind from the optimum direction and a decent swell operating. Thar she blew with a small roar and whoosh a column of water rose and then dispersed in the air and left an impressive trail of water running of the smooth rocky surface and back to the sea. - The Neck Bruny Island

    The Neck image
The Neck is a great place to stop and look at the amazing veuw. It was very windy the day we went but up the top the little tree blocked the wind. There are about 200 steps to walk up to the top or you can do the easy walk to the beach viewing platform. The penguins can be viewed from both lookouts. There are also public toilets here. 5. 4.5 Remarkable Cave (579 reviews)
    - Power of the waves on display
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Remarkable Cave image
This is a quick detour from the road to Port Arthur The car park and steps are new and well-maintained, making the walk down quite manageable. Once you get to the viewing platform, the water display is mesmerising. I watched the waves surge through the gap for 20 minutes and could have stayed longer. This cave is free to visit and and well worth 15 minutes of your day. TIP: If you position your camera or phone carefully and focus just on the light, it creates an outline of Tasmania. See more..

The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is the most iconic & dominant landmark on Bruny Island. Nestled on the sea-cliff tops in the South Bruny National Park, at the southern tip of Bruny Island. Built from 1836 she sits proud, overlooking the craggy coastlines of Southern Tasmania. This is the southernmost lighthouse tour in Australia. The tours to the top operate daily. For just $15 you will hear stories of shipwrecks, convicts and how the lighthouse keepers performed their daily duties. Learn how the lighthouse was built and experience the wild ocean and sea cliff views from above. This lighthouse is independently leased from Parks and Wildlife and operated by Craig Parsey who's family lived at Cape Bruny during the 1970's as Lighthouse Keepers. $15 is a small price to pay for such a wonderful experience, the icing on the cake! Tessellated Pavement was well worth the stop when driving through Eaglehawk Neck. It was a short 5 - 7 minute walk from the carpark to the Tessellated Pavement. You could actually walk around the pavement and look at the cracks, loaves and pans up close - very cool. See more..
  11. 5.0 Mt Amos Climb (218 reviews)
    - Challenging Climb, spectacular views
Spent More than 3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Mt Amos Climb image
We loved doing this trail. Definitely need a reasonable level of fitness and some courage in a few spots. We went a day after rain so the track was a bit wet and slippery in a few spots. Being a bit height challenged, I had to rely on my upper strength to pull myself up in a few spots. At the Ranger station they recommended that if we didn't see the yellow track marker within 3 minutes from the last one to turn back until you located. Great recommendation, easy to get off track, just need to take the time to look around to locate them. Once at the top the view was spectacular. So worth the climb. I was most scared about the trip down but once I started it wasn't so bad. Recommend good hiking pants as coming down requires a good bit of time sliding on your bottom. Return trip took us just under 3 hours with time for a few photos and a quick bite to eat. Highly recommend this one. Amazing! See more..

  14. 4.0 The Town Clock (109 reviews)
    - Ornate Clock Tower
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    The Town Clock image
Seated in the Civic Square when the clock chimed once, twice and then silence. I was more intrigued with the tower than with the chimes and did some research on the spot. The tower dates to 1889 but the clock was not installed until 1910 thanks to a fundraising effort by a group called the Launceston Clock and Chimes Committee who raised funds to extend the existing tower and purchase and install a clock. 112 years later it is still chiming on the hour. I sourced a great description of the tower on a Tasmanian travel site. It reads, "An ornate brick tower rises out of the General Post Office. The cylindrical base of the tower tapers until it's interrupted by a decorative polygon with a massive clockface on four sides. On top of the clockface section of the tower sits an observation room with windows facing north, east, south and west." Talk about leisure and learning. See more..
  15. 4.5 Cataract Gorge (93 reviews)
    - Well worth a visit, adults and children alike
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Hiking Trails • Scenic Walking Areas
    Cataract Gorge image
We were visiting Australian relatives in Launceston and they recommended the gorge and we weren’t disappointed. On arrival from the car park the path round to the left and cross over the suspension bridge, stop in at the cafe for a coffee and scone. The peacocks are brilliant. Then continue on down alongside the river to the entrance into the gorge and the old iron bridge in Launceston, cross the bridge and then turn right following the path back into gorge working your way up the hill. It’s quite steep in parts but well worth the climb. You’ll eventually find yourself back at the entrance to the park. Finally, take a return journey on the old chair lift and cross over the gorge and back again, $20 adult return or $15 for OAPs. Highly recommended. See more..
  16. 4.0 Spray Tunnel (80 reviews)
    - Spray tunnel be prepared
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Spray Tunnel image
A great experience that has you on a daunting drive to reach the destination I personally would go during dusk so it’s still light for better road viability I went at 2050 and saw a heap of glowworms I went at this time as a local recommended this to me. Things to note Driving The road is very narrow every 1km or so their is a section allowing a car to pull over. If you approach a car like I did the car reversed for like 400 metres so I could pass. I was in a SUV and they where a land cruiser we both couldn’t fit. When leaving Go back the same way you came. Don’t follow the arrow to the left this is a 4WD track I did this in my SUV and honestly was surprised I made it back. See more..

Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Giant Penguin image
Penguin is a beautiful town with their Main Street right on Bass Strait. It is situated between Ulverstone and Burnie and well worth the detour to view our magnificent icons - the big Penguin - have your photo taken with him on the foreshore next door to the playground, the Uniting and Anglican churches, both beautifully restored and Hiscutt Park with our Windmill. The Railway Station is also an icon and finish off with a lovely morning tea, lunch or dinner at one of our many eating places. You won’t regret your visit! See more..
  18. 4.5 Stanley Heritage Walk (68 reviews)
    - Follow in the footsteps of the past
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Stanley Heritage Walk image
This is a self-guided walk that will help you explore the history, architecture and culture of this diverse village. And it's a comprehensive list of places to visit... well worth going on though. It's amazing how much history is in this remote village! There are QR Codes for those technological savvy individuals ( Oh come on... even 'I' know how to use those, so they aren't too difficult) to learn about each site. I also noticed that the hotel I was staying in had a card outlining the points of interest, and I understand they are available at the Tourist Information ( when it's open). Fifteen iconic sites throughout the town are included in the walk and it should take just over an hour... depending on how much you dwell to take photos. I recommend you wear comfortable shoes to do this. See more..

  20. 4.5 Four Corners of Ross (54 reviews)
    - Magnificent historic town
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Four Corners of Ross image
Road trip north to Spirit and needed a pit stop. Ross well worth the detour and in fact deserves a couple of days for a slow exploration, walk and savour. Amazing and rich history. Marvellous architecture. For example on southern end of town is an old church (now stewarded by Uniting Church). Beautiful, peaceful and moving - to quiet prayer after hard 2020. A lovely town to curiously wander and enjoy. See more..
  21. 4.5 Isle of the Dead (39 reviews)
    - High standard guided tour
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Isle of the Dead image
The only way to visit this island is to book a guided tour. Your free harbour cruise with entry to Port Arthur Historic Site will cruise past but not allow you to set foot on the island. It is only a small island but 1100 souls were buried there - convicts, military and free settlers alike. A brilliant tour capably guided by Josh. Would highly recommend if your budget allows. 22. 5.0 Tarn Shelf (33 reviews)
    - Simply stunning
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Tarn Shelf image
As with others we would recommend hiking the Tarn Shelf clockwise to tackle the steeper, uphill, walk at the outset. We also agree that its AT LEAST an 8 hour walk and seemingly further than some brochures indicate. Quite a tiring day despite encountering a keen, young, man RUNNING the circuit with obviously much tougher ankles than us. We also encountered some young ladies without backpacks and in sneakers. Please heed the warnings and go properly prepared. The weather can change rapidly in this alpine region, although we encountered a perfect, windless, day in late summer. Despite the cool, alpine, altitude, there can also be snakes such as the tiger we encountered. So take care, although if left alone, they present no problem. Check the weather and pick your day if able too for one of Tasmania's truly lovely and rewarding walks. See more..

  28. 4.5 The Separate Prison (21 reviews)
    - Haunting.
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    The Separate Prison image
Its hard to imagine what being a prisoner in this place would've been like. You go in quietly and stay quiet while you are in there. Such a demoralizing place to be. It was based on the British Pentonville gaol system where isolation was key to breaking the prisoner. The building itself was preserved well and has a lot of good displays and information in it. The parish was good and seeing the isolation pews, made it real as you have to go to church and can only see the pastor. See more..

  30. 4.5 Donaghys Lookout (18 reviews)
    - Stunning view from the top on the Tasmania's east coast mountains!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Donaghys Lookout image
On Lyell highway, around 24 minutes (35km) from Derwent Brige, there is the start of a walking trail (40 minutes return) that will bring you to the hilltop called Donaghys Hill. The trail is not flat and has a slight slope but nothing too difficult. you will pass through the rain forest with different varieties of trees and plants. The view from the top is quite rewarding, as you can see all the mountain tops of the zone around you and the Collingwood River. You'll feel at peace on the top, without any noise from the human world, but only the flowing of the river and singing of the birds. Definitely worth the time spent to walk there. In an ideal day, without clouds and wind, it'll be amazing. See more..

  33. 4.0 The Westerway Raspberry Farm (14 reviews)
    - Pricey berries but a nice spot for lunch
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Farms
    The Westerway Raspberry Farm image
There’s a clever business here which charges $5 a head, and $15 a kilo for berries, meaning that if you bring the family those freshly picked berries could cost you $35 a kilo. But many take part just to give the kids a chance to run around, and enjoy the experience of picking your own berries. To save time, and money, you can buy your own in the store, which usually has a great selection of different freshly picked berries, and also sells cheese, tea, coffee, ice cream and cold drinks. There are picnic tables outside if you want to eat your berries, or maybe bring your own lunch and top it up with some berries, an ice cream or drink from the store. There’s no seating inside, so only stop for lunch here if the weather is good. It’s the perfect spot if you’re visiting the nearby Russell Falls and want to eat, but avoid the National Park’s fast food café up the road. See more..

It was built by migrant labour in 1953 and straddles the original Cenotaph which was dedicated in 1924. The base rerpresents the blue sea and is the outline of Tasmania. The three columns rising above the base represent the armed services of the army, navy and air force with three chains uniting them. A four-faced clock is mounted on top of the pillars and the Torch of Remembrance is at the apex. See more..
