- 4.5 Gordon Dam (150 reviews)
-A vertigo inducing marvel of construction
Spent < 1 hour Dams
Pictures don't do this place justice, it really must be seen to be believed. The sheer size of this dam as you look down on it boggles the mind, especially when you look across and see the tiny ladders going down on the other side with tunnels cut in to the wall to descend internally in some sections. There were actually people standing at the bottom which looked like ants from the top. You can apparently abseil down this if you are some sort of maniac without a fear of heights, I had to crawl over to the edge myself while doing deep breathing exercises to be able to get some pictures through the fence looking down. This is a must, even if it is only a day trip from Hobart or Mt Field, bt make sure you stop in at the Wilderness Lodge for a drink or a meal as the views are amazing across Lake Pedder. See more..
- 4.5 Mt Paris Dam (26 reviews)
-Nothing like the other Paris
Spent 1-2 hours Dams
We had quite a bit of trouble finding Mt Paris Dam, driving in from Weldborough. In the end we had just about given up, when we noticed a rustic hand-painted pointing down a side-track. Sheer luck. With our high level of anticipation, the site itself was a bit disappointing, though the bare ribs of the concrete dam wall were an impressive sight. Nature is making some progress in reclaiming the site, though it will be a long process. The battered plaque describing the history of the dam makes interesting reading. See more..
- 4.0 Serpentine Dam (25 reviews)
-The little sister of the Gordon Dam up the road
Spent 1-2 hours Dams
Serpentine Dam lies at Lake Pedder, a few km's outside of Strathgordon on the way to Gordon Dam. It's about 3km along a gravel road off the main road and has parking right on site. Info boards provide a good insight and it's possible to walk across the dam wall and climb the steps on the opposite side to gain a better view. Well worth the small detour. There is also a boat ramp nearby. See more..
- 3.5 Devils Gate Dam (7 reviews)
-Spectacular dam - great engineering
Spent < 1 hour Dams
It is a very pleasant, short forest drive in to the dam: parking is a bout 300m from the structure itself, to which you need to walk to view. 84m high double-curvature concrete arch dam: pretty innovative and unique at its’ time of construction. A beautiful setting: the forest and birdlife were wonderful. See more..
