    Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre image
We had no wait time at the visitor centre when we showed our parks pass and obtained our shuttle bus tickets enabling us to take the 20-minute bus ride to Dove Lake. Personal vehicle access is quite limited and the shuttle bus is the way to go. The young lady who gave us our bus tickets was friendly and informative, showing us on a map which section of the walk around Dove Lake was closed for maintenance. After our walk in the park we stopped at the visitor centre cafe for some takeaway food. I was a little confused about what we had ordered when it was time to pay and the young guy with a moustache handing out the food and taking payment got a sarcastic grin on his face and shook his head as if to indicate he thought he was dealing with a total idiot. He continued this the entire time I was there paying, though never looking me in the eye. It’s too bad this one cafe staff person can make such a lovely day end on a sour note. See more..

    Geeveston Visitor Centre image
The Visitor Centre is located in a large two storey building that was built in 1914 and that used to be the Town Hall. On the ground floor, apart from the usual maps, books, brochures and other information on local sights, accommodation etc, there is a very large area showcasing a vast array of local products that are for sale. There was a large range of local artisan hand made wood products, artwork, a variety of different souvenirs of all shapes and uses, jars of preserves, jams, honey etc, wine, cider, ceramics, pottery, glassware, jewellery etc. Unfortunately the advertised wood turner was not on duty the day we visited. Upstairs there was a display of machinery and equipment that used to be used in the timber industry. Overall, very well done. t See more..

St Helens Visitor Centre & History Room image
A great little find. Our accommodation host provided us with this little gem of a place, as well as providing information on this region of Tasmania, the complex also houses a great little local museum or what they call "History room". It's only two rooms, so don't expect to spend a day here, but there was soo much information on the ship wrecks in the area, artifacts from the timber and mining industries and local items from an era long past. A good enjoyable way to spend an hour or two. See more..

The 5 stars here is what the Visitor Centre gives you access to - some great short walks close to the centre, and the ferry for a trip across the lake and a longer walk back as the final section of the Overland Track. The short walks are superb - a 90 minute circuit links up all 3 and shows you rivers, rainforest, ferns, tall trees, wildlife, on a fairly easy walk. The centre itself has a decent range of walking gear and souvenirs, and the attached Lodge restaurant will serve you breakfast, lunch, a snack or a coffee. Well worth the stop. See more..

  19. 4.0 Evandale Community Centre (7 reviews)
    - Interesting convict history

    Evandale Community Centre image
We really enjoyed our little visit to Evandale that was about a 20 min drive from Launceston. We visited the community centre and was greeted by a very lovely lady who volunteers at the centre. We enjoyed looking at the small but significant room of history and then we came across this big water tower model. We pressed play and enjoyed the short commentary on the big brick water tower history that was built by convicts and completed in 1895 to supply water to the town. And it’s not just the tower that was built it was hard work because a tunnel needed to be dug for the water to reach the town. See more..

    - Casual and welcoming

The Centre is staffed by friendly volunteers who are very knowledgeable about their historic town and nearby attractions. Very good selection of pamphlets and other literature available, plus local crafts, giftware and souvenir items. The building seems very new and a total contrast between two heritage buildings, the former state school (now the golf museum) and the teachers residence. Limited opening hours advertised (11.00am – 3.00pm) due to reliance on volunteers, this also limit visiting hours to the Golf Museum See more..
