  1. 4.5 Wineglass Bay Lookout (2.246 reviews)
    - Such a great view of the bay
    Lookouts
    Wineglass Bay Lookout image
We did the short walk around the lighthouse where you can look back to wineglass bay. The walk is only 15 minutes if you didn't stop. Its a flat walk. You drive a short distance from the tourist information Centre. The wineglass bay tours want to charge you $290 per person. Just a rip off! No food, just a seat on the boat. I refuse to pay these operators such exorbitant prices. I can see why some only go once a day. I am sure the weather also plays a part because the wind goes right through you and the bay can be quiet rough. Check in with the Tourist information Centre and they will give you the options available. You can buy a ticket from the tourist centers valid for twelve months to access all the national parks throughout Tasmania. You can have up to 8 people on the one ticket. cost is around $82. Constitution Dock image
From the yachts and boats moored, the brass sculptures, the old buildings and the historic details written on signs and on brass means there is a lot to see at Constitution Dock. The Mona Ferry terminal is on Brooke Pier and it has a lovely cafe and Tasmanian craft and produce stalls. Fish restaurants and floating fish shops on the dock guarantee that you can get a good fish feed. See more..
  3. 4.5 Mount Nelson Lookout (632 reviews)
    - Mt Nelson by Metro bus
    Lookouts
    Mount Nelson Lookout image
Took a Metro bus to Mt Nelson and it was a great trip on the bus. Get a Green card from the Metro shop for $5 and top it up with how much you think you will need for a few trips on the local bus routes. The views from Mt Nelson are amazing, plus there is the old Signal station visitors centre to visit with some fascinating history in both items on display and a panoramic display of the waterways. Visit the cafe for a meal or a coffee - say hello to Hamish who provides great service . Totally enjoyed both the trip on the bus and the time spent at Mt Nelson. See more..
  4. 4.5 Shot Tower (283 reviews)
    - Leadshot was manufactured here
    Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Lookouts
    Shot Tower image
Difficult to miss the Shot Tower if passing through Taroona, its a 58.7m tall landmark. It was the first built in Australia, dating to 1870, and is now the only circular shot tower remaining in the world. Built by Joseph Moir, and two stonemasons, the stats are mind boggling particularly in view of his claim that it was constructed in eight months. Over 4,000 curved sandstone blocks, 10m in diameter at the base and tapering to 3.9m diameter at the top, 58.7m above. The walls are one meter thickness at the base and taper to half-meter thickness at the top. He had also built a powder magazine, furnace and three storey factory. It is generally held that the complex took eight years to complete. I wondered what safety conditions existed when mixing hot lead with arsenic and antimony to make the Leadshot. We didn’t brave the 300 step climb to the top. See more..
  5. 4.0 Devil's Kitchen (139 reviews)
    - Great natural setting, just hard / dangerous to get a good view.
    Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Lookouts
    Devil's Kitchen image
We parked down at the Tasman arch and did the walk down the path to get to the devils kitchen. Its a 5 minute walk, not energetic. When you get there, its hard to get a good view as the viewing platform doesn't give a good view. You can just get a glimpse down to the bottom and see the water and just to the entrance of the cave. The drop off from the viewing platform is sheer and its very high. For you safety, stay on the right side of the fence. And watch you don't drop your phone as you won't be getting it back. See more..

    Brady's Lookout image
A beautiful little stop off. Great toilet facilities. Well directed off the main road. Well sign posted and well maintained walk ways. Loved the mesh on the timber. Great story of the reason for the name too. Super seats and plenty of bins. See more..
  7. 4.5 Whalers Lookout (68 reviews)
    - Good view from the top
    Spent 1-2 hours Lookouts
    Whalers Lookout image
This lookout was used by whalers to spot the whales as they were making their way down the coast. When one was spotted, a person would climb a tree and hoist a flag. Then the hunt would begin. Thankfully there is no whaling but the tree still exists with the iron mechs dim at the top that was used to raise the flag. See more..

  9. 4.5 Horsetail Falls (59 reviews)

    Horsetail Falls image
I was not planning to walk to the Falls, but the walkway caught my eye as I was driving past and I just had to stop. The engineers have done a fantastic job attaching the walkway to the side of the hill. A strenuous walk but worth it for the spectacular views. The walkway is very exposed, so be prepared for cold, wet and windy weather. The Falls themselves were not very impressive from the walkway, but it was the experience that I enjoyed. See more..

  11. 4.5 Alum Cliffs (49 reviews)

    Alum Cliffs image
From the small car park, you have a short walk (about 20mins) along a gravel path, to reach the viewpoint. The path does go up and down a bit, but is well maintained. Alongside the path at regulr intervals are info boards, giving information on the wildlife, the area and its importance to Aboriginal culture. The walk back is along the same route as the walk out. The view is pretty spectacular, so definitely make the effort to visit if you are in the area. See more..
  12. 4.0 Spion Kop Lookout (40 reviews)
    - Hard to reach - but great view
Spent < 1 hour Historic Walking Areas • Lookouts • Mines
    Spion Kop Lookout image
Many visitors to Queenstown would just not find this lookout - on a back street, poorly signposted, with parking for barely two cars at a time and then there's the steep climb up a narrow path to the top. But there the visitor gets the story of the lookout and its artefacts as well as a FABULOUS view over the township and mountains. More people would visit if it was better advertised and more accessible. See more..
  13. 4.0 Sumac Lookout (37 reviews)
    - Breathtaking View over the majestic Arthur River and surrounding Rainforest
    Spent < 1 hour Lookouts
    Sumac Lookout image
Visited Tuesday 29th November. We picked up a brochure at Stanley Visitor Information Centre called The Tarkine Drive. Sumac Lookout was one of twenty two places you could visit. We choose to stop here as the lookout was easy to get to and it was late in the afternoon. If you want to do a longer walk there are other places to stop. I suggest you allow a day to do the drive so you can enjoy and soak up the atmosphere of this wilderness area. See more..
  14. 4.0 Mt George Lookout (33 reviews)
    - Short detour but skippable

    Mt George Lookout image
IMO pretty average views of surrounding forrests and towns, if you look north you can see the mouth of River Tamar. To get here it's about 5min off the highway, then walk around 5min on boardwalks before climbing a metal scaffold tower. Telecom tower blocks off about half the view to the east. I suggest Bradys Lookout further south instead if you want to see the river. See more..
  15. 4.0 Trethewies Lookout (32 reviews)
    - What a great way to view Stanley
    Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Lookouts
    Trethewies Lookout image
Visited here on Monday 28th November on our way into Stanley. This is a great spot to stop as you are arriving at Stanley to view the township of Stanley, The Nut, Tallows Beach and the surrounding country side. There is a small parking area off the road with good views or you can walk a few metres to a viewing area and take in the panoramic views. Well worth stopping there, easier if you do it as you arrive as there is no parking on the other side of the road. See more..
  16. 4.5 Three Thumbs Lookout (30 reviews)
    - Spectacular Coastal Views
    Spent < 1 hour Lookouts
    Three Thumbs Lookout image
I heard about this spot after reading a number of road trip travel articles of the Coles Bay region. The lookout is only about 4km from Orford, but it is a steep climb (drive) up a rough gravel road to get there. Consequently it will take 15 to 20 minutes to get there. The directions are roughly; 1. Turn into Charles Rd Orford from the Tasman Highway 2. About 1km from the town bridge, take the right-hand turn into Wielangta Road. 3. After about 2km along Wielangta Road a signpost clearly marks the entrance to the Three Thumbs State Reserve. Turn right and travel about 2km along the gravel road to the lookout. The lookout will provide exceptional views up and down the coastline. I recommend that you take the time out, get off the main road, and check out this lookout. See more..

  21. 4.5 Devils Gullet Lookout (16 reviews)
    - Fire damaged but accessible
    Spent 1-2 hours Lookouts
    Devils Gullet Lookout image
The view from the top is spectacular. The path to the viewpoint is labelled as closed at the car park. However when we visited the path was actually accessible. Some sections are a little bit rough but much of it has been repaired. Workmen were busy repairing it and quite happy for us to walk past them, even letting us know how much further it was. It's no more than 10 minutes from the car park (ie 20 minutes return) - not the 45 minutes return indicated on the signpost at the car park. A relatively long detour off the main road, but it's on a well maintained gravel road and well worth the effort. See more..
  22. 4.0 St Helens Point Conservation Area (16 reviews)

St Helens Point Conservation Area image
I recommend picking up information on day walks from the St Helens information centre. It lists all the walks you can do here and choose the best duration for you. I did the Burns Bay to Beerbarrell beach walk. It was easy 1 hour return walk along the coastline with frequent views of the granite boulders. The walk goes through trees so it was shady as well. The beach is beautiful and good to sit and relax for a while. See more..
  23. 4.5 Mount Misery Walk (12 reviews)
    - Beautiful hideaway with fabulous walks
Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Lookouts • Hiking Trails
    Mount Misery Walk image
Oldgrowth and Rainforest, Sub alpine heathland, a mountaintop and small waterfall. This track is well constructed and zig zags through the sometimes steep terrain. Most people with a moderate level of fitness will complete this walk in around 3-4 hours including breaks. Beginning at the car park at Huon Bush Retreats, the track climbs gently for about 15 minutes through young and old-growth forest to the rainforest viewing platform. A further 45 minutes steep climb up the escarpment cliffs takes you onto the sub-alpine heathland plateau and "Flat Rock". From here you can enjoy spectacular 360 degree views towards Bruny Island and the Southwest World Heritage Area. From Flat Rock it is a further 30 - 45 minutes along the plateau to Mt Misery summit. Return with optional side track to a small waterfall. Access to walking tracks is covered by your tariff if you are an overnight guest. For day visitors, we ask for a donation to contribute to maintenance of the tracks and roads. See more..

WOW! This was my favourite spot on Bruny Island. The scenery was so beautiful no matter which way you looked. We searched for penguins but didn’t see any. Ample parking. We were part of a small tour group touring Flinders Island. We were going up on Mt Leventhorpe which has a communication tower on top as well as Walker’s Lookout. We were supposed to have morning tea up there at the picnic table but it was pouring rain and total whiteout. Our guide decided, in the afterto try again, this time the 360 degree views were definitely worth us returning. See more..

This is a good stop for lunch or morning/afternoon tea after visiting the Philosopher Falls. The view is spectacular. Facilities are limited to seating. Views were great, cliffs were interesting, spent half an hour here. The tiny shell fossils are embedded into the mud and cliff face rocks. There's a relatively easy walk up the lookout to a benchseat on top of the hill. The carpark is huge so there was plenty of space for everyone. See more..

    Dempster Plains Lookout image
Sometimes surprises in life can be heartwarming ... this is one of those times. I followed a sign off the Tarkine Road ... it goes up a dirt road...which is a bit rough at times, but I did it in a hire car and she (I named my hire car Heidi) did it well. I have no doubt a 4WD would find the road easier...but if you feel you can do this, it's worth the trip. When you arrive at the site you will see what you think initially is a look out next to the road...to be honest, it looks disappointing. But park your car and step up onto that deck and follow the path. It feels like you are in a set of the Lion King... button grass everywhere ... as far as the eye can see. It's hard to explain the sheer majesty of this place so I think the only thing left is for you to go and see for yourself. See more..

    Gordon Dam Lookout image
There is the lookout over the dam at the end of Gordon River Rd, but a short distance back up the road there is also the Knob Hill Lookout which is worth driving into (only a few hundred metres). Views of Lake Gordon are provided from the car park, and a short flat walk of a couple of hundred metres takes you to the Knob Hill lookout over Gordon Dam - gives you a higher up perspective than the lookout at the dam itself. High on top of the Nut is this amazing lookout... you will literally catch your breath as you look out onto the view. It will capture your breath because the wind up there is strong ... there is nothing to protect you, but I can assure you it's worth losing moments in time up there. The sea stretches before you with it's azure blue scintillating your heightened senses... it's a perfect place to lose yourself. And I suggest that you do find time to lose yourself here... it's really quite beautiful. From here you will have views of the wharf and the town... and if you are fortunate you might see one of the wildlife visiting while you stand so quietly. See more..

    Barn Bluff image
A little further than Cradle Mountain - and standing 10m higher - Barn Bluff gives you similar views but without the crowds. Continue on the Overland Track about 6km past the Cradle Mt track, to reach the well-marked "Barn Bluff" track. Similar to Cradle Mt, the last part of the track is rock-clambering, marked by rock cairns. The summit offers great views of Cradle Mountain national park, with the Cradle Mt peak on one side and Lake Will on the other. A sold but rewarding day-walk - with an early start and if you're fit you could "bag" Barn Bluff and Cradle Mt peaks in the same (long) day. Barn Bluff on its own is about 23km round trip, all on well-marked track and a similar ascent as the more frequently-climbed Cradle Mt. See more..

Good viewing area on the side of the highway to the 'Sleeping Beauty' mountain in the distance and the valley below with the Stoney Vale vineyard, the sign indicating that Stony Vale was founded in 1856. Sinkhole image
So I am driving the Tarkine Drive and even with a map... I didn't see the sign for this until the last minute. It's a roadside stop ... literally road side. So there is room for about two cars to stop here and you really need to pull off onto the verge. To say I was stunned when I saw this would be understating it. I read the sign that said we were in sinkhole country and thought... "Well damn ... I wonder if the road will give way under me at any point." But then I rationalised that and thought that it would be an interesting way to die and they might write about me in the newspaper. :) Photos do NOT do this place justice. It's really, truly stunning. BUT don't take my word for it... go and see this yourself. It's so picturesque. It did go through my head that it's a shame that I left my camera at home and was forced to use my phone because I can only imagine what a good filter would do. This truly could be classified as a hidden gem... hidden in plain sight. See more..

The Three Sisters are neighbours to the nearby Goat Island... they are three small and rocky granite islands, with a collective land area of 2 hectares. The islands are steep-sided. Their vegetation of sparse coastal scrub is largely limited to their summits. Seals will visit them and it's an important area for the local birdlife. So I was driving towards King Solomon's Caves and this was on the side of the road... there is plenty of room for you to pull over on the side of the road. However, this lookout has been neglected. The roadside isn't in great condition, the signage is faded and I had to climb over a small fence to take photos. BUT if you can get past all of that... Oh MY god... it's beautiful. The views are stunning. There are several mountains and the shades of green and blue are mesmerising. I admittedly stood there just drinking in the view before I committed to moving on from this rather beautiful vista. See more..
