    - Historical and Peaceful

Salmon Ponds Heritage Hatchery and Gardens image
We found the information about the history of the Salmon Ponds on the boards as we entered very informative. It was great being able to buy some fish food. Our daughter found it fun to feed the fish in the various ponds. It’s quite exciting when one jumped up out of the water. The ambience of the whole place due to the advanced trees was wonderful. We found it interesting to visit the Museums too. We had lunch in the restaurant. Quick service and delicious food. We enjoyed the riverwalk. Disappointed we didn’t see any platypus anywhere. We weren’t sure the $8 entry fee per person would be worth it but we decided it was. See more..

    Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden image
Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden is a remarkable private garden built and operated by volunteers in the north-west of Tasmania. The 11-hectare property is located 8km south of Burnie, off the Ridgley Highway and features over 24,000 select rhododendrons and companion plants from around the world, creating a spectacular display of blooms between late August and November, and striking Autumn foliage colours from March to May. The tranquillity of this lush environment can be enjoyed year-round, with three pristine mirror-like lakes and expansive views from our strategically placed pavilions. The birdsong of diverse bird life and encounters with native fauna such as platypus and echidna are another unique aspect. In addition to the hybrid rhododendrons familiar to gardeners, we also conserve many wild species of rhododendrons growing in geographically defined areas of the garden, that reflect the plant's origins - from Asia, across the Himalayas to China, Japan and North America. Stopped in after getting wind of this place on our way to Launceston and glad we did. Very welcoming and knowledgeable about their craft. Sat out on the patio under an umbrella and sampled a tasting paddle. Some very unique and tasty beers. Shame the hop vines were regenerating but it was the wrong time of year for them. Pick up some take home and continued on our way. Definitely worth a stop for any craft beer lover. See more..

    National Rose Garden image
Our November visit saw l the healthy abundant roses in full bloom. All usefully labelled with the variety, and grouped in thematic colour schemes. Bearded Irises were absolutely gorgeous. To top it off , the garden is within the 1820's historic heritage listed estate where convict labour built he wealth of the Woolmer family, who owned the farming property for 170 years ! Easily accessible as it is 20 km from Launceston, and a scenic country drive. Enjoyed a cappucino at the cafe to finish, which has a perfectly positioned outlook over the rose garden. If you have a passion for roses, this is a must see. Flat level paths , so good for walking . See more..

    Memorial Garden image
Such a peaceful garden and the shell of the cafe where Australia’s worst massacre took place in the year 2000. I couldn’t help but think about all the people that would have been eating at the restaurant when the shooting took place. Many of them tourists, never to return home. I liked the leaves in the water representing each person that died. See more..

Designed by Commandant William Champ, it was made for the women and children to exercise in. It had fallen into disrepair and was redone in the 1990's. It was an amazingly beautifully sculpted garden and lovely to walk through around. No matter what the weather, it is worth a look. See more..

Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Gardens
    Henry Somerset Orchid Reserve image
Spent a very enjoyable couple of hours huntiong for orchids yesterday, and found at least 3 possible four different ones. A lot of other plants were also flowiering, so it was a very pretty walk, even if you don't spot the orchids. I recommend going with someone who knows what to look for, as the orchids are very well camoflaged, and easy to miss. Only negative was the amount of dog poo - it woyuld be good to have signage reminding people that they need to clean up after their dogs, and maybe also a bag dispenser, and rubbish bin. See more..

  19. 4.5 Dorset Museum and Oakdene Gardens (2 reviews)
    - A Real Gem for Gardeners and Cultural History Buffs
Spent 1-2 hours Gardens • History Museums
Located in the farming district of Jetsonville, just a short distance from Scottsdale Oakdene Gardens and Museums is a fantastic place to visit. The garden has many specimens of azalia, camellias and rhododendrons. Dry stone walls separate garden rooms with the beach area and “boat” being one of many highlights. Old machinery has also been used with great affect in the garden. His and hers museums are of interest to those who love “old things” or the history of the Dorset area. In the “his” museum you will find many photos of the North East. Restored tools and items of interest for the menfolk should keep them busy while the ladies view the fashions from bygone eras in the “hers” museum. Highly recommend if you are travelling through the Scottsdale area. See more..

First of its kind in Tasmania, Longford Village Green has a state-of-the-art electronic playground combining the joys of outdoor play with the immersion of gaming. The system enables players to interact through computer games, either collaboratively or competitively, whilst requiring them to physically (and often vigorously!) move around on and with the play units. Longford is a classified historic town with many fine houses and estates built by convicts in the early 1800s, it is a country town full of colonial charm, lovely convict-built buildings and grand estates that relive the past. This village green is a wonderful shared space for the community... with information boards and toilets... it makes a great stop to have a break from driving. See more..
  22. 3.0 King George V Park (1 review)
    - Regally named

    King George V Park image
So who was King George V? He was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. Born during the reign of his grandmother Queen Victoria, George was third in the line of succession behind his father, Prince Albert Edward, and his own elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. From 1877 to 1892, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. On the death of Victoria in 1901, George's father ascended the throne as Edward VII, and George was created Prince of Wales. He became king-emperor on his father's death in 1910. So where is it? It is a little hidden behind the shops on the Main Street... and if you turn into High Street you will see a carpark there ... if you park , you can go through a stroll. It does have the mosaic park... and some amazing pioneer memorials. There are public toilets, a playground, a BBQ, picnic tables and lovely established trees. See more..
