4.5Cataract Gorge Reserve(5.794 reviews) - Great for seeing wildlife Thursday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
Recommend taking cable car on the way up (paid entry), then walking down through the swinging bridge, takes around 1 hour in total. Lots of wallabies and peafowls in the area at top of the cable car, some black swans in the gorge below. Allow more time if you want to spend time doing other walks. Carpark requires paid ticket and fills up pretty quickly.See more..

5.0Cradle Mountain(1.254 reviews) - Ya Pulingina Spent More than 3 hours Mountains • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Forests • Waterfalls
Glad that we took the advice of the Visitor Information Centre in Hobart and purchased the Seniors Annual Park Pass, it gave us access to the Park and the shuttle service. We enjoyed the drive from Waratah to the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre and then the scenery from the shuttle bus and again at each stopping point. I commented to my wife that its a place that we should have visited 20 years ago in order to spend time and enjoy the walking trails and the varied scenery and lake systems. What we did see was some wonderful ecology, moorland that was very similar in appearance to that seen in Ireland & Scotland, trees covered in moss and crystal clear streams. Wonderful location and a place were we could easily spend time and feel as one with nature.See more..
4.5The Nut State Reserve(1.155 reviews) - Best views in Tasmania Nature & Wildlife Areas
We had 3 weeks around Tassie and this was my favourite spot of the lot. Sensational 360 views and beautiful blue/green water. The full walk around the top of "The Nut" was quite taxing on a warm day so pace yourself. The chairlift is well worth whatever the cost was I think around the $15-$20 mark for a return trip. Highly recommended area to visit and admire.See more..

The world's first Unzoo project is an innovative and holistic wildlife experience dedicated to showing you the unique animals and plants of Tasmania while taking a lead role in preserving the critically endangered Tasmanian devil. Join our guided wildlife encounters and come face to face with our famous devils, pademelons, rosellas, kangaroos, possums and tawny frogmouths. More than two km of trails take you through the Tasmanian Native Botanic Garden from tall tree forest to the Norfolk Bay seaside. The principle of the Unzoo is to immerse you in our natural environment so, for instance, we have removed our boundary fences so the local wild animals can come and go as they please. Allow two hours for your visit or add an hour for a 4WD research and conservation adventure to see how we are managing the last safe wild Tasmanian devils on Earth. The Unzoo is open every day (except 25 Dec) from 9am. We schedule our wildlife encounters each half hour or so, that's 14 every day.See more..

5.0Freycinet National Park(471 reviews) - Freycinet National park Tasmania National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Cliffs, walks, hikes, wildlife, wildflowers, beautiful bays. Views to die for. Even while raining it was beautiful. We chose a cabin at the Big 4 Iluka pity the previous occupants had cooked curry. The cabin reeked of it. It t permeated everything inside the cabin. Even the bedding reeked. If you come to Freycinet make it worth it. Stay somewhere really nice! We preserveered over 3 nights leaving windows and doors open to rid the curry stench. Next time we'll do the lodge.See more..
We enjoyed walking through the Bay of Fires area. The scenery is stunning from white sandy beaches, granite boulders and aquamarine water. The changes are subtle under different light. The best part about the area is its tranquility and being away from crowds. Plenty to see and explore. See more..
You could easily spend a whole day here with lovely grassy areas for a picnic, a swimming pool, bush walks, playground, Cafe and of course the chairlift itself. 4.5Friendly Beaches(165 reviews) - Gorgeous White Sandy Beach Spent More than 3 hours Beaches • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Beautiful white sandy beach located in Freycinet national park. You need to go down a dirt road for a few kilometres to a lookout which will provide a view similar to the displayed cover photo. Continue down the road to the carpark if you wish to walk along the beach, which can take hours due to its very long length. Beware that because of its located in Freycinet National Park you will need to display a active Tasmanian parks pass on your vehicle or otherwise risk a 75 dollar fine.See more..

5.0Penguin Observation Centre(133 reviews) - Little Penguin Observation Centre is a Tasmanian must do! Nature & Wildlife Areas
This has been such a pleasant surprise highlight of my Tasmanian trip. What a stellar, volunteer run conservation effort. I would highly recommend planning one night to come and view the wild penguins nesting as you’re definitely going to see them close up. 4.0Snug Falls(51 reviews) - Love the location Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Waterfalls
We were very fortunate to have been staying right above the falls. On our last day we hiked down to the falls. The track was a bit rough and in some parts very wet and muddy. I particularly like tracks like that. The reward at the bottom is well worth the hike- beautiful waterfall surrounded by so much greenery.See more..
4.5Lillico Beach Conservation Area(45 reviews) - A great stop on our drive to learn and stretch our legs. Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
A great little stop on our drive. It was very interesting and informative with signs, boards and recent stat's of the penguins movements. We were lucky enough to see a penguin inside a rock hide during the day. Great for the kids to stretch their legs briefly and the views were stunning at high tide. No toilets (5 yo we'd in a bush in the car park..sorry). Be mindful of being quiet, sticking to the path and no torches or flash photography at night. This is penguin territory and it can disturb them.See more..
4.5Tall Trees Walk(44 reviews) - Majestic old trees Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
We did this as part of the longer Russell Falls-Horseshoe Falls-Lady Barron Falls- Tall Trees Walk circuit. This was one of my favourite parts. Taken here by a local - wow, what a stunning, peaceful, beautiful place. There are great bush walking tracks around the lake itself or going further a field. Short, long, physical and gentle. Overnight trekking as well. The diversity of plant life is a highlight, depending on the time of year. A lot of excellent information available near the car park. See more..
4.5Lady Barron Falls(37 reviews) - Worth the extra walking Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Waterfalls
Walks from Mount Field visitors centre you can view Russell, Horseshoe and Lady Barron Falls. Lady Barron is the furthest and can be seen in isolation with a 40 minute walk or can be seen as part of the combined 3 Falls walk which takes about 2.5 hours. Each water fall is unique and I recommend seeing all three. Lady Barron does involve quite a few steps so reasonably fitness levels are required. However their are plenty of places to stop and rest. No bathrooms available once you leave the visitor centre.See more..
4.5Platypus Walk(36 reviews) - It's unknown and underrated but great for a sighting Nature & Wildlife Areas
We went at the wrong time of day at 10:30am in summer, apparently in the early morning or dusk in spring are best. Saw one going up and down the river. It was wonderful, we've never seen one in the wild in SA. We spent an hour here filming it go up and down. A local lady was walking past and seemed more interested in her dog, we said "wow we've seen a big one" and she smiled and said "that's nice dear" lol. Clearly not that rare hereSee more..
4.0Warrawee Forest Reserve(34 reviews) - A year after the devastating floods Nature & Wildlife Areas

It’s not Antarctica and you won’t see the penguins jumping out of the water like they do for David Attenborough! But it’s a sweet , free and pleasant experience if you haven’t seen fairy penguins in the wild before. We got there just before dark at 9:15pm and watched a few babies waiting for their parents. After dark the parents slowly gathered on the rocks and made their way up. We had to wait until about 10pm to really see them and our hotel gave us the special red torches that are safe to use. Unfortunately there were 3 idiot men who couldn’t respect the silence and talked incessantly and there was another idiot who took photos with their flash and could have ruined it for us all. We stayed until everyone left which was about 10:30pm. I like that it’s respectful to the penguins and not a money making exploit. Worth doing!See more..
4.5Duck Hole Lake Walk(19 reviews) - Great day trip Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas

Thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the serpentarium with the owner Matt. Got there just in time for the roo feeding and presentation, both very accessible for everyone and a fun experience. We learned a lot about snakes and were able to hold two pythons and interact with the Indian Star Tortoises while they wandered about the place. The anaconda is a sight to see as well! Highly recommend, especially for anyone nervous about holding a snake, Matt will help you to feel comfortable and safe.See more..
4.0St Helens Point Conservation Area(16 reviews) - Beautiful scenery and variety of walks Spent < 1 hour Nature & Wildlife Areas • Lookouts
I recommend picking up information on day walks from the St Helens information centre. It lists all the walks you can do here and choose the best duration for you. I did the Burns Bay to Beerbarrell beach walk. It was easy 1 hour return walk along the coastline with frequent views of the granite boulders. The walk goes through trees so it was shady as well. The beach is beautiful and good to sit and relax for a while. See more..

4.0Hellyer Gorge(14 reviews) - What a beautiful place to explore Spent < 1 hour Nature & Wildlife Areas
As soon as you step out of your car you smell the freshness in the air. This place is beautiful to the eye and ear. Walking through is a wonderful experience. We enjoyed a picnic lunch but would have had a BBQ had we realized there was a BBQ. I was surprised how clean the toilets were.See more..
We went here yesterday the loop took us about 75 minutes, it is steep in parts we are not fit, but managed well enough it’s any easy path to follow & in parts is absolutely stunning. Public toilets are at the start of the loop make sure you use them as there is none elsewhere on the loop, there is also nowhere to stop for a picnic & only 1 bench about half way through to stop & rest, make sure you take water. I will certainly taking visitors here probably not in the winter though as I think it would be to slippery. See more..
We popped in in our drive from Cradle Mountain back to Hobart to a Franklin River walk. It was a short 20-30 minutes but we saw some amazing King Nilly pines and Pencil Pines. The forest in the warm afternoon sun was delightful. Highly recommended.See more..
5.0Kelly Basin(9 reviews) - Very interesting trail Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
During our stay in Queenstown we followed Mount Jukes road over Jukes Pass till we got to a crossing with a sign "Bird River Walking Track". If you have 4WD car or the conditions are good, you can follow the Track for another 5 km. Otherwise it is better to leave the the car at the crossing and follow the track. The trails joins the old railway which led once to old settlement of Pillinger. Today the forest claimed everything back. But everywhere are traces of the old settlement to be found such as parts of old bridges, the pier, chimneys or parts of the railway tracks or the old railway carriage. See more..
The neck is well worth a visit. It is a stunningly beautiful beach. You can go there at dusk to see the sheerwaters and penguins come back to nest for the night. If you do go in the evening, drive very slowly there is a lot of wildlife on the roads. It’s very difficult to see the penguins as they don’t come up until it’s dark. Only red torches may be used and there is absolutely no lighting at all in the area. It’s quite dangerous walking back to the car so be careful.See more..
4.5Lake Chisholm(6 reviews) - Pure magic Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails • Geologic Formations
This was my favourite place on the Tarkine Circuit Drive. The path to the lake takes you through some truly beautiful rainforest. With the massive fallen logs in the forest, the colorful fungi, the mosses clinging to trees and rocks and the vast number of tree ferns it really is a magical place. The lake is surprisingly large and is said to be one of the best examples of a flooded sinkhole in Australia. Its waters are very still and cold, and I'm sure very deep. Platypus are said to live here but we didn't see any. It is an easy walk from the carpark, at most half an hour each way.See more..
The loop is now open! We enjoyed doing a circuit - went up the older track and came back by the newer track. It gives a great view of the bay. Just be cautious at the top where the stone walkway is - we almost trod on a snake to the side of the track. He moved away fast under the rocks that form the path. Not a reason not to do the walk, but just a word of caution...See more..
We stopped for the third time this year at the Steppes Sculpture and walked through to the homestead (950m walk). We love the history and feel of this area. 4.0Henry Somerset Orchid Reserve(5 reviews) - Go with someone who knows orchids Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Gardens
Spent a very enjoyable couple of hours huntiong for orchids yesterday, and found at least 3 possible four different ones. A lot of other plants were also flowiering, so it was a very pretty walk, even if you don't spot the orchids. I recommend going with someone who knows what to look for, as the orchids are very well camoflaged, and easy to miss. Only negative was the amount of dog poo - it woyuld be good to have signage reminding people that they need to clean up after their dogs, and maybe also a bag dispenser, and rubbish bin.See more..
