  1. 4.5 Mount Wellington (7.800 reviews)
    - A 5 Hour round trip - Moderate to hard hike with spectacular views

Take the 448 bus from Davey Street to the Fern Inn stop - Approximately 10 km ($5.00). The track starts across the road and is well sign-posted. The first major stop is the Silver Fern Falls which is approximately 1km along the track. From there you climb past the the Lost Freight Cafe on the Pinnacle path to the summit. I am a reasonably fast walker and this took about 2 hours. Some sections are steep and may require poles but on the whole I think its a moderate to hard climb. There are several options on route to take paths to other sides of the mountain to look at different features. Each path is labelled with difficulty and a time. PLEASE NOTE: The conditions do change quickly. We hiked in Feb and the change in temperature and conditions was quite dramatic. On the summit there are a number of observation posts and a road leading down from the car park if you want a more leisurely decent. See more..

Glad that we took the advice of the Visitor Information Centre in Hobart and purchased the Seniors Annual Park Pass, it gave us access to the Park and the shuttle service. We enjoyed the drive from Waratah to the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre and then the scenery from the shuttle bus and again at each stopping point. I commented to my wife that its a place that we should have visited 20 years ago in order to spend time and enjoy the walking trails and the varied scenery and lake systems. What we did see was some wonderful ecology, moorland that was very similar in appearance to that seen in Ireland & Scotland, trees covered in moss and crystal clear streams. Wonderful location and a place were we could easily spend time and feel as one with nature. See more..

We popped in in our drive from Cradle Mountain back to Hobart to a Franklin River walk. It was a short 20-30 minutes but we saw some amazing King Nilly pines and Pencil Pines. The forest in the warm afternoon sun was delightful. Highly recommended. See more..
  5. 5.0 Cradle Mountain (13 reviews)
    - It was a fantastic way to spend the day.

Visitors entering the park must leave their vehicles in the parking lot and use the shuttlebus, which runs every 10 minutes. A café is located in the visitor's centre. The shuttle bus makes a few stops, with the last one at Dove Lake being the most popular. The stroll around the lake is encouraged, albeit there are some areas that are rather steep and need the use of steps. The trees in the Ballroom woodland section of the walk are very lovely. 6. 5.0 Mt Donaldson (12 reviews)
    - Great walk
Spent More than 3 hours Mountains
    Mt Donaldson image
We thoroughly enjoyed this walk. Took us roughly 1 hr 15 to reach the top and we had great views, luckily it was a cloudless day. The first half ascends through thick forest and the second half is open grass/alpine hill with little cover/ shade so bring weather protection. Lookout is quite windy at the top, however certainly worth the climb! The peak is the only one of its size in the area so you get a beautiful panorama and views to the coast. On a cloudy or misty day the view may be compromised. See more..

It would be nicer on a clearer day, but still quite impressive, the view of Mt Huxley was a bit closer to Queenstown and can't be seen from this Lookout and is also worth a stop. See more..
  8. 4.5 Mount Barrow (3 reviews)
    - Terrible road but so glad we did it
    Spent < 1 hour Mountains

If you can't handle Jacobs Ladder in Ben Lomond NP, then skip the road up Mount Barrow. It is slightly narrower than Jacobs Ladder but definitely worth the trip to the summit if you can handle it. I am scared of heights/exposure so I closed my eyes and trusted my husband's driving. While it was very windy and cold at the summit, we were well rewarded with not just the view but snow falling. There is a great shelter which means you can stay out of the wind and still get some good photos. We had lunch when we came back down in a picnic area by the side of the road. (I would have added photos but it wasn't an option because Mount Barrow was not already on TA) See more..
  9. 4.5 Barn Bluff (3 reviews)
    - A less-crowded alternative to Cradle Mountain
Spent More than 3 hours Mountains • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lookouts
    Barn Bluff image
A little further than Cradle Mountain - and standing 10m higher - Barn Bluff gives you similar views but without the crowds. Continue on the Overland Track about 6km past the Cradle Mt track, to reach the well-marked "Barn Bluff" track. Similar to Cradle Mt, the last part of the track is rock-clambering, marked by rock cairns. The summit offers great views of Cradle Mountain national park, with the Cradle Mt peak on one side and Lake Will on the other. A sold but rewarding day-walk - with an early start and if you're fit you could "bag" Barn Bluff and Cradle Mt peaks in the same (long) day. Barn Bluff on its own is about 23km round trip, all on well-marked track and a similar ascent as the more frequently-climbed Cradle Mt. See more..

Fantastic example of Tasmanian West Coast rugged bush. One can imagine the challenges the early explorers had in opening up the Tasmanian wilderness. Worth a visit See more..
