Driving along Lyell Highway and noticed a sign, 'Welcome to Linda', the café flag was fluttering on the roadside nearby, stopped and noticed that it wasn't open, no sign of life, and decided to drive on. Shortly afterwards another sign, 'You're leaving Linda'. Thy welcome sign featured the head of a Tasmanian Tiger, while the entire animal featured on the leaving. Intrigued, I made some enquiries over the next couple of days with minimal success and then turned to the web. Linda was founded in 1899, gold being discovered nearby at the North Mount Lyell Mine. After the mine disaster of 1912, when 42 miners perished, Linda began to decline fast. Reputed to have a population of 600 plus in it's heyday, it's population is now estimated at 10 but they must be in the environs of the town. The only old building that remains is the skeleton of the former Royal Hotel, built in 1901, destroyed by fire in 1910, rebuilt until abandoned in 1952 when it's license was allowed to lapse. The site and accompanying half acre block was sold in 2021, maybe life will return to the old girl. See more..
