Intense and Interesting

The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) was built by David Walsh to house his collection of ancient, modern, and contemporary art. Located on the banks of the Derwent a short ferry trip from Hobart, Mona is Australia’s largest private museum with three levels of underground galleries, which visitors explore with custom-built, handheld technology, called the O, that tells them about the artworks on display. Mona is David’s playground and experiment: we need art, he says, but for what? Mona is also home to two wineries and a brewery, several bars, and restaurants, luxury accommodation pavilions, a library, a cemetery, and a tennis court. Museum entry Adult $35 / Concession $30 Under 18's are free (but still, need to book a ticket) Tasmanian free ($10 booking deposit, which you can get back if you show up)

    Hard to do it justice……..
We loved MONA. It was challenging, confronting, over the top and generous. The vision, concept, architecture, exhibits, performances are unlike anything we have experienced anywhere. You either “get it” or you don’t. MONA is deliberately confusing and turns upside down conventional art gallery experiences. The free App is wonderful and we are looking forward to revisiting the app to relive and find out more about what we were experiencing. Because is it so deliberately confusing there are heaps of very helpful staff everywhere to explain and direct you. The place has wildly expensive antique couches and chairs everywhere to sit and have a coffee, snack or beer. The outdoor areas are a beautiful respite. We were so gobsmacked by the experience, we went back the next day! The diversity and specialness of MONA is a gift. We can’t recommend it enough to those with an open mind, leave your conventional ideas at the door……this is an experience like no other……

A bit pricey for what you get
You need a car or take a25 minute ferry ride to get to this museum partly buried inside the cliff. It get’s pricey with a 35 dollar entry fee and 25 dollar roundtripferry, but it’s a nice way to see some Hobart water. The museum is wellstaffed, but you need to download the app since nothing is signed or explained. If you have no phone or are unable to download, you’ll have a problem. The museum itself is in a way spectacular, perhaps more reminiscent of a war bunker with exposed rock, raw metal and no windows. It’s also prententious in many ways and the artwork varies in quality and appeal ( although that is of course subjective) Tjhere is a nice park surrounding and if lucky you can get icecream, beer and food from different stalls. On my visit, several patrons didn’t get their ordered food due to electronic issues…
