The bikes make this such a unique place.

Michigan's first state park. This is Mackinac Island State Park, a landscape characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant forests, and mystical geological formations. With automobiles banned since 1898, here exists a quieter way of life away from interstate noise of cities. Over 80 percent of Mackinac Island is within Mackinac Island State Park—free of charge and open year round—where you’ll discover the true natural gems of Mackinac. Whether visiting this island parkland by foot, bike, horseback, or carriage, these many majestic geological wonders and unique historical monuments are visual treasures found only here—on the island sacred to the Ojibwa and Odawa Great Lakes Indian tribes. According to them, this is where life began. You’re invited to discover why. This is Mackinac.

Unique and unforgettable (very good) experience
There is something for everyone on this island that has beautiful views all around and unique charm with no cars, use of horse carriages for transportation and loaded with tourists enjoying fudge and biking along the island perimeter. It is easy to forget for a while that one is still in the USA. The ferry from Mackinaw City is approx 30 minutes one way and costs about $30/person.

    Beautiful views
Overall a great place to visit. The road was closed so we weren’t able to go all the way around the island. The reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was that none of the public restrooms had a place to fill water bottles, which you would typically expect to have for a state park. It might not sound like a big deal, but on a hot day it’s easy to go through a ton of water. Even with each of our party members having 3 bottles of water we had to refill them at restaurants twice. Also, there is a small sign by the spring that says you can’t drink the water but it is a bit tucked away. Enough about water, though…trails were well maintained but quite busy unless you are off the main ones, which are the only ones with clear signage. I would recommend taking the less traveled trails if you need an escape from the crowds; the island isn’t all that big so it’s sometimes worth the extra 1/4 mile of walking.
