Kitch-Iti-Kipi (The Big Spring), Michigan, United States

Cool and unusual

Checked out this natural wonder. It's colors like that of the Caribbean in the UP of Michigan! It's a short walk from parking, and picnic area. The trail leads to a glass bottom barge that runs on a cable where you turn a wheel yourself to move out across the water. You can view large lake trout and see sunken logs and bubbling sand where the spring flows. There is also a viewing deck. Back up by parking is a gift shop where you can also get drinks and ice cream. Free entrance if you have a yearly Michigan Recreational sticker. $36 for non residents for all state parks is a bargain!

a Must See off the beaten path
Looking on Trip Advisor for things to do in the Upper Penisula, and this was close to where we were staying. Truly one of the coolest things we have seen in our travels, totally expected a "oh that's nice" and got a"wow this is so cool!". You have to pay to get a state park pass if you don't have one, it was either $5 or $10. The raft ride is free. Nice bathrooms and gift shop. The forested area on the short walk to the raft was so very calm and quiet, weather conditions must have been just right as the air was crystal clear and seemed to highlight everything. Other people commented on the clarity as well. The raft is very nice, riders must/can take turns turning the wheel to make it go out to the middle. The water is so calm and clear, the most gorgeous color, and you can see the bottom 40 feet down easily. Then the water started bubbling up through a crack and that was also fun to watch. Just beautiful and the interesting facts about it never freezing just make it a wonder of nature.

    Very cool!!
We waited in line about 30 min (on a Sunday afternoon) to ride the observation raft, and it was worth it. The water in the “big spring” is such a beautiful color when you view it from the side and so crystal clear that you could look straight down to the bottom. The kids and adults both enjoyed the views. The volunteers greeting us and turning the wheel on the raft were very friendly. There are also bathrooms, a gift shop, and picnic tables near the parking lot. The state park requires a pass. We purchased a non-resident day pass for $9 when entering the parking lot.
