Interesting history for the Fort!

Iconic. The cannon blasts, the rifles fire, the soldiers march and history comes alive. The oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historical structures boast exhibits explaining everything from military training and battles to medical treatments to family life within the fort. More than just a military outpost, Fort Mackinac served as a home for soldiers and their families and eventually the headquarters for Mackinac National Park, where tourists to the island visited the great fortress on the bluff, much like they do today. This is Mackinac.

Worth the climb to the top
Saw Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City the day before and this was the fort the British built after dismantling Fort Michilimackinac in 1781. The Americans took over the fort after the Revolutionary War and have held it ever since, except for a short time during the War of 1812. This is not a reconstructed fort and is shown as what the fort looked like in the 1880’s. Even if you are not interested in military history, worth visiting just to get the beautiful views of the island from the top. Steep climb after you enter, so go early if here on a hot day. Once at the top, there are many buildings to tour and there are various re-enactments on the top of each hour. Found the drill and rifle shooting the most interesting. If you are going to visit this site and you have a family, you may want to consider getting a family pass at $85. This gets you into both forts, the lighthouse in Mackinac City, plus the Historic Mill Creek Discovery Center for two adults and all of your children. Will come out ahead, if you visit three of the sites with a family of four. Tip: If it is a nice day, can picnic on the lawn in front of the fort. If you didn’t pack a lunch, there is a grocery store (Doud’s) on the corner next to the path leading to the fort.

Historic fort with great view and well curated buildings
If you're walking or biking up the middle of the island, this is a great place to rest and look around. Nicely preserved buildings with a walk-through museum of Mackinac Island history. Live military drills - educational and interactive. For the price of admission you can also eat at the hillside cafe with THE best views on the island.
