5 Star Places To Visit in Maine, United States (50)
5.0Marginal Way(5.400 reviews) - Wonderfully maintained path with gorgeous views Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Walking Areas
Marginal Way is a scenic 1.5-mile cliff walk that hugs the Atlantic Ocean, starting at Shore Road in Ogunquit and ending at Perkins Cove. As you stroll along this easy paved walk, you'll get stunning views of the ocean, and pass by rocky cliffs, tide pools, shallow beaches and also the Lobster Point Lighthouse. There are also plenty of stops along the way where you can rest and watch the sunset. It gets busy during summer, so visit during fall or spring to beat the crowds and heat. You can also book a stay at one of the B&Bs along the coast, and explore the rest of coastal Maine on a guided tour. – TripadvisorSee more..
5.0Cadillac Mountain(3.662 reviews) - Mountain Top Experience? Mountains
Cadillac Mountain is a must-see within Acadia National Park in Maine. At 1,527 feet, it's the highest peak on the East Coast. Reach the summit on a hike through the lush pine forest, or take a leisurely drive up and park at the overlook. Once you're there, be wowed by the incredible views of Mount Desert Island and the Porcupine Islands. If you're visiting in the winter, you can catch the first sunrise in the continental U.S. from the mountain top. You'll need a pass to visit Cadillac Mountain, usually included on a tour of Acadia National Park. – TripadvisorSee more..

5.0Portland Head Light(2.392 reviews) - Gorgeous lighthouse Monday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Lighthouses
Although Maine’s oldest lighthouse is closed to the public, there’s plenty to do within the grounds of Fort Williams Park. Stop by the adjacent museum to learn about the lighthouse’s history and enjoy the lawns—perfect for a picnic as you watch boats entering and leaving the harbor. You can also hike one of the trails along the rocky shore or explore several ruins within the former Fort Williams, which include two batteries, a powerhouse, and a bunker. More adventurous travelers can snorkel or scuba dive at the stunning Ship Cove. – TripadvisorSee more..
I really appreciate visiting Acadia National Park during august 2022. We went to visit the Park sleeping in Camden, about 1h 30 by car, but less expensive thank sleeping inside the Park itself. I like Cadillac Mountain despite the fact that there were a lot of fog at the pick and not very good visibility. We went also for a easy trip in Jordon Pond (a beautiful lake) in the South East of the park of about 3 miles/5 km, I suggest to do this tour also with children, it is really easy and safe. The park costs 30$ per day with private car and ti visit Cadillac I suggest to book online with anticipation, it is 6$ per daySee more..
What a great way to spend an afternoon in Bar Harbor. The 2 person crew was friendly, polite and super informative. The boat was pretty full but it felt roomy enough. The guide, Gaelyn, narrated throughout the excursion with unmatched enthusiasm. He is a retired teacher and it was obvious that he loves to teach and entertain. We learned in an interactive way about lobsters and the harbor. After the lobster hunting we road out to a lighthouse where we circumnavigated the little island it's on. There were two types of seals swimming and sunning. Tons of birds enjoyed the island and it's skies including two amazing bald eagles. Only SLIGHT possible negative .... Gaelyn really likes hamming it up with the kids. There were 5 kids on board and there was a LOT of time spent being silly with them. Seriously, how many ways can you put a lobster on a kid's head? If you're annoyed by weird kid stuff, this could be uncool for you. Haha! If you have kids, bring them!See more..

5.0Mount Battie(1.813 reviews) - Went on a foggy day and normal day Mountains
Mount Battie and its hundred-year-old tower is the highest point of Camden Hills State Park. You can reach the summit by following a 1.2-mile winding trail through the forest, where you'll be treated to commanding views of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay, especially from the top of the tower. Try to spot Mount Battie and the tower along a cruise tour of Maine's coast. While you're there, Camden Hills State Park is also great for hikes along its 25-mile trail system, mountain biking, and horseback riding, as well as snow sports in the colder months. You can even camp overnight. – TripadvisorSee more..
5.0SK Tours Of Maine, LLC(1.606 reviews) - AN ABSOLUTE "MUST" FOR CONSTANT READERS & THIER FAMILIES! CUJO LOVED IT! Monday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sightseeing Tours
We just took the tour last week and it was excellent. Our guide Jamie was knowledgeable not only about King, his family and his works but also the Bangor area. We booked a private tour for 5 plus our St Bernard and the tour was roomy and comfortable for all of us. We were thrilled to learn that our dog "Cujo" was the first Cujo EVER to take the tour! I am a self-proclaimed SK expert and I learned a few things. My wife and kids also had a great time. Its a great tour for fans of the books, movies OR both. I am also interested in the history of Betts Bookstore....and as a bonus...Jamie's father was the previous owner....so I got extra history there as well! I only wish I would have booked another tour for later that day JUST to ask additional questions and see additional sites. We will definitely be back to do another tour in the future. A MUST for Constant Readers!See more..

5.0Ogunquit Playhouse(1.041 reviews) - Young Frankenstein, "outdoors" for a fun experience.... Theaters
Wow, we saw "Young Frankenstein" at the "outdoor" tent at the Ogunquit Playhouse and were impressed with the venue and production. We've never sat inside, so can't compare, but it felt that they created a first rate theater experience under the tent. Lighting, sound and stage were excellent. We saw a matinee on a chilly afternoon, so I can see that it could get pretty cold for the evening performances. They leave the large doors open so there is plenty of airflow and masks are required. This was our first theater experience since the pandemic began, and we felt very comfortable. The production itself was a hoot, and even better than the movie. It was a musical, not my favorite genre, but this really worked, Talented performers, made for a fun and memorable evening. Do not hesitate!!See more..
5.0Maine State Sea Kayak(1.031 reviews) - Worth every cent! Nature & Wildlife Tours • Kayaking & Canoeing
Sam did a great job leading his first trip! He was very knowledgeable of the area, came prepared for any unexpected circumstances and did a great job keeping the group together and keeping people engaged. It was great to have Kyle as a bonus guide, he added humor and well seasoned knowledge of the area and really shared his passion with us. Shout out to Colby for not only driving the bus but driving a bus with a trailer attached to it - as someone who has sent a trailer over the edge of a ramp more than once, I was impressed. All in all I would highly recommend adding Maine State Sea Kayak onto your to-do list for your trip to Acadia, the staff are great, the views are wonderful, and the wildlife is hard to beat, one of the best kayak trips I’ve gone on with guides!See more..
Amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean from the rocky Maine coastline. Parking is free and it costs only $3 to climb up the lighthouse tower (max four people at a time and that is a tight squeeze). The place is run by volunteers, who are friendly and helpful. There are public toilets on site plus an art gallery and an interesting little fisherman's museum. Note, the SeaGull restaurant and gift shop is not part of the site.See more..
5.0The Real Portland Tour(853 reviews) - Sign up!!! Monday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sightseeing Tours
This tour was definitely worth the time and money! The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area. He kept the conversation light and funny. We originally thought that it would have been better to take the tour at the beginning of our week in Portland, but taking it on the last full day there was even better, as we now have started to build our itinerary for our next visit. Sign up!!! You won't regret it.See more..
5.0Three Rivers Whitewater Rafting(803 reviews) - Awesome! Sam was stellar!! Monday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM River Rafting & Tubing • Adrenaline & Extreme Tours
We had an awesome trip on the Kennebeck river! Our tour guide Sam was skillful, energetic and knowledgeable - the route was beautiful and she did a great job navigating through the rapids. The post rafting lunch was delicious too. We hope to back again soon! 10/10 would recommend!See more..
64 years old and completed the beehive trail and climb. I won’t lie i almost went and did the bowl trail up. I thought that there were people though younger but in no better shape than I that did it. It really is not that scary fron height standpoint it you concentrate on the path and look out not down. Hiking sticks are no use so leave behind. The hard part takes just about 30 minutes. The iron rungs are not just there to climb on but also a grab bars to help climb. Very glad I did it and the view is awesome. Get there before 8am in the summer or you will have a difficult time parking and having a crowded climb. See more..
5.0Scenic Flights of Acadia(575 reviews) - wonderful from soup to nuts Monday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Air Tours
the folks at Scenic Flights were wonderful from our first call seeking reservation, there follow up in between and our arrival at their office. The plane was clean as a whistle and ready to go when we arrived, the pilot a consummate professional with great knowledge of the area. He provided a nice narrative of what we were seeing while not being overwhelming w talking. We have done flightseeing trips all over the world, The Acadia operation is top notch, hence they have been around for decades.See more..
My family has been traveling to Acadia NP for nearly twenty years and Schoodic Peninsula was a fairly recent addition to our usual itinerary. However, the drive over is well worth it. The cycling along the peninsula is among the nicest in the park (and much less busy than the Park Loop Road). I also especially recommend cycling on the gravel paths traversing the center of the peninsula. The hiking on the peninsula is not particularly interesting, but cycling and scenic drives are worthwhile.See more..
5.0Schoodic Point(502 reviews) - A point to remember Geologic Formations
Acadia National Park has many hidden spots to visit. This is one of those where the crowds are lesser than other parts of the park. Schoodic point is located about 75 minutes from Bar Harbor. It is located in Winter Harbor and may be one of the least visited places but as the word gets around this place will get packed for sure. I would strongly recommend visiting the Schoodic peninsula where the Schoodic point is located. As the name suggests, the Schoodic point is located at the tip of the Winter Harbor area with gorgeous views of the ocean. This place has ample parking and great facilities as well. Fun part about visiting this place is to navigate the rocks as you get closer to the ocean. This is a great place for a picnic spot. Watch for the seagulls as well. The waves crashing the rocks is a sight not to be missed. I would have loved to visit this place on a sunny day. But still the experience was magical.See more..
5.0Cabbage Island(501 reviews) - Fun trip on a hot summer day Islands
We really enjoyed our trip to Cabbage Island. The food was great and so was the service. We were a bit surprised by how large of an event it is (we had a tour group on our boat with about 100+ people from Georgia, unmasked and indoors, which made us a bit nervous). We had to sit in the outside back of the boat because there were not any available seats and we felt unsafe inside. But the food and the service on the island made up for this. We would do this again in the future! See more..
5.0Skydive New England, LLC(433 reviews) - Such a Great Place!! Monday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Adrenaline & Extreme Tours
I Skydived for the first time with Skydive New England and it was quite an unforgettable experience!! The entire staff who work there are a great group of real, fun, lively, and energetic people who clearly and absolutely love what they do! The environment on the ground (and in the sky!) was entertaining, comforting, and very enjoyable. They really put a lot of effort into making everyone feel safe, welcomed and EXCITED for their experience of a lifetime! I am so thankful to have had DYLAN as my awesome instructor who made every step of the process easy to understand and fun to do! He was great! I can’t thank my videographer BROOKE enough for capturing such incredible footage and for just being so kind an personable. I would absolutely recommend Skydive New England to anyone looking to Jump and I can’t wait to go again!See more..

5.0Frenchman Bay(387 reviews) - Paradise. Bodies of Water
When I went to the Bar Harbor side of it the weather was foggy and cool, such a nice relief from the heat and humidity. Loved the windjammers and sailboats, and there were some pretty nice yachts. There's a nice little park on the hill overlooking French Bay. I also saw Frenchman Bay from the Schoodic Peninsula, and it was equally breathtaking.See more..

My Acadia tour book recommended this trail and I’m so glad I did it! The trailhead is in a parking lot off the east side of the Park Loop Road. You first hike north up the interior, on the mountain, then pop out further north on the Park Loop Road. You walk the rest of the way on Ocean Path which is flat, gravelly, and along the road. Ocean Path has several beautiful views. The mountainous part of the trail is mostly made of granite faces and rocks, so you need to place your feet carefully. Lots of beautiful views. Highly recommend.See more..
5.0Young's Guide Service(314 reviews) - When Chris Young calls, moose respond Safaris • Fishing Charters & Tours • Nature & Wildlife Tours
My experience with Chris Young more than fulfilled my expectations. Starting before sunrise, Chris and I arrived at one location and spotted a female and calf grazing in the distance. Chris determined that the male had recently left the area, so we did too, arriving at a second location 20 minutes later. By now, the light was better. We staked out a location. Chris heard two bulls in the woods beyond a clearing. He began calling to them, using a combination of male & females sounds and also simulating the sound of a male moving through brush. It took 10 or 15 minutes but sure as day, a huge bull moose could be seen approaching through the woods. He was so large that he had to turn his head sideways so his antlers would fit between the branches of two trees. He emerged slowly and approached, keeping his eye on us. I was furiously taking pictures while Chris handled the conversation, eventually dismissing the moose after determining that safety called for it. The overall experience was exhilarating. Chris is totally knowledgeable about moose habits. He was fun to be with and delivered one of the most exciting experiences of my life. I recommend him totally. He's the best.See more..

5.0Crab Apple Whitewater(281 reviews) - Crabapple Whitewater Exceeded Expectations! River Rafting & Tubing
Booked a Kennebec River raft trip and two nights at their River Cottage as a high school graduation celebration for my 18 year old son, 5 of his friends, my oldest son and me. What an amazing time. The three generation of owners and their staff were incredibly upbeat, helpful and attentive; kudos to Chuck, Sharyn, Rob, Carrie and Courtney! The accommodations were perfect for our needs, with comfortable beds/linens for all of us, a modest living room with Direct TV access (so we could watch the NBA Finals) and TWO bathrooms with stand up showers . Our river guide Jim was THE BEST! He connected well with the boys and did a superb job navigating the river and ensuing lots of thrills. As best I could tell, he nailed every rapid, hole and wet zone to ensure we all got soaked (which we loved). The smiling faces in the photos were evidence of that. And then he manned the grill for the awesome steak dinner afterwards (at which we all got seconds). The staff also had great suggestions for other activities given our time there - we thoroughly enjoyed Moxie Falls & swimming at the base of the falls and moose hunting north through the border town of Jackman up to the Canadian border and back. So, if not obvious, I would highly recommend Crabapple Whitewater!See more..

5.0Great Head Trail(225 reviews) - Short hike with spectacular vistas along the way Hiking Trails
Fabulous views in perfect weather... as always... Keep in mind that at the end of May the counter clockwise path was closed and this path is easier to follow. However the clockwise path is equally gorgeous, just a little trickier to descend than to ascend in two spots. If you want a manageable and short hike with great rewards, Great Head Trail is for you - the views of the ocean, the beach and the islands are stunning. If you arrive at Sand Beach around 5PM, finding a parking spot is very possible and the hike will not take more than 90 minutes.See more..
5.0Portland by the Foot(224 reviews) - 10/10 would recommend taking Dugan's tours! City Tours • Historical & Heritage Tours • Walking Tours • Private Tours
I took both the Women's History and the Black History tour, and I learned so much on both of them! Dugan is a captivating tour guide who has so much knowledge about all the topics he is covering and is willing to go the extra mile (literally!) to answer people's questions with enthusiasm. I am from Maine and heard so many stories that never came up in my history classes, and prompted me and my group to go look up all the people Dugan brought up on the tours. 10/10 would recommend taking Dugan's tours!See more..

5.0Maine Huts & Trails(211 reviews) - Get off grid here! Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Multi-day Tours • Ski & Snow Tours • Hiking & Camping Tours • Stand Up Paddleboarding
We took advantage of Maine Huts and Trails' option for private rental of the whole hut. We booked the Flagstaff Hut and headed up with a group of friends for an early November weekend. Kevin, the caretaker, met us at the trail head to drive our belongings to the hut. He showed us around got us comfortable with the hut and its off-grid magic. After that, we were on our own. We enjoyed the amazing trails for running, mountain biking and hiking. The hut is in good condition and has everything you might need for cooking (less the food, we brought that). We enjoyed the many puzzles and games at the hut. It is nice to be without cell service once in a while. Kevin was there to pick us up on Sunday and we were sad to go. We hope to return soon either for another private rental or during the typical service with a caretaker.See more..
This is a wonderful little art museum! I especially enjoyed the Remington and Gaudens bronze sculptures, the Etruscan pottery, and the works by Andrew Wyeth, Homer, Picasso, and Cassatt. The Alex Katz exhibit was great, too. This was a destination art museum and worth the trip (and the absurd current cost of gas). I was very surprised that there was no entry fee. It's a definite return trip in the near future to see new exhibits and to enjoy the permanent collection once more.See more..
5.0Northern Outdoors Whitewater Rafting(193 reviews) - Northern Outdoors Penobscot River rafting River Rafting & Tubing • Water Sports • Kayaking & Canoeing
We did Penobscot River rafting with Northern Outdoors. Our group enjoyed it a lot. The river has grade 5 rapids and there is a 10 foot fall along the river that is very unique. The service from Northern Outdoors were great, the lunch and coffee was tasty and hot. Our raft guide Eileen did a great job instructing us and making sure we all are having fun. Despite being a rainy day they did a great job in making sure everyone is having a great time and adventure during the trip. One advice I can give is to have good instructions about when the trip starts in the morning and when is the reporting time. There are multiple companies doing the rafting business from the same base camp. But overall a five start experience.See more..
We were forewarned about pre-purchasing our timed tickets for Cadillac mountain so it made it quite easy to drive up to the access gate and enter. We had also purchased the weekly car pass, which I believe is also required along with the additional Cadillac mtn pass. Other than the person from Ohio who was driving at 10MPH and didn't want to pull off or over, the ride up was beautiful and even better at the top. We were able to get some picturesque sunset photos and take the path to explore the mountaintop. Well worth the extra $6!See more..

5.0Eagle Lake Acadia National Park(145 reviews) - Very pretty lake and beaver pond nearby Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water • National Parks
We arrived about 6:30pm on a weekday and had no trouble parking in the small lot near the north end of Eagle Lake. We walked the short trail toward the lake and saw wide gravel walking trails and directional signage but did not have time to check out these trails. We just walked down to the lake’s edge for a few photos. From the parking lot, walk east on the road a short distance to see the beaver pond. In the late afternoon light, it was very pretty and we saw two beaver lodges on opposite sides of the pond.See more..
