You must see this adorable library! I can't believe this site isn't just buzzing about it. It is such a treat to glimpse into yesteryear and see how the Victorians lived and loved. Loved? Yes, this library was erected in 1897 by a woman in the memory of her husband. Once you go inside, you'll want to stay just to admire it all. A Fireplace! Old books! Archways! Stone walls! A vase of fresh flowers! The soft lighting inside is due in part to the beautiful big windows near the ceiling. We spoke to the head librarian who had worked there for years and lives just up the street. She was a wealth of information and had a very sweet disposition that we could have easily stayed the day just to absorb the ambiance. See more..

    - Beautiful welcoming space

Beautiful library, surrounded by beautiful grounds. (Take a good look at the benches!) The library is designed so that the above-ground lantern lets in enough sunlight so the interior lighting is warm and soft, the opposite of library florescent bulbs. The building is just lovely inside and out, and the surrounding gardens and amphitheater are nice spaces to explore. See more..

  7. 4.0 Marsden Hartley Cultural Center / Lewiston Public Library (3 reviews)
    - In this city, it's a great attraction!
    Monday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Libraries
There's really not much to do in Lewiston. I know, I lived there half of my life and growing up I used to visit this place quite often. There is much to see, they have a section devoted to the Marsden Hartley Cultural Center. The library really is one of the only places to enjoy when visiting the town, along with Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary. See more..

    - Delightful Small Library on an Island in Casco Bay

This was a great place to find a local or regional newspaper, catch up on some monthly magazines, or print a boarding pass in the computer room. The library’s collection had about 9,600 print volumes for readers of all ages. It had several cozy chairs for reading from a diverse selection of fiction and non-fiction titles. Its staff and volunteers were welcoming and informative. Library hours varied by day of week; tip sheets helped patrons track open hours. The bathroom was pristine. The Dodwell Gallery, in the same building, displayed art by island artists. Free parking was in paved spaces near the front entrance. I appreciated all that I found here. I disliked nothing. This public library was pure pleasure to visit. Its librarians were congenial and helpful. The library’s collection held about 43,000 volumes. It also offered access to statewide interlibrary loans and self-checkout of library materials. After its second expansion, completed in 2020, it now had new and/or expanded spaces separately dedicated to children, teens, and adults. It had public meeting rooms, restrooms, and a computer access center. All covid-19 safety protocols were in place. Ample parking was in front of its main entrance. I appreciated all that I found here; I disliked nothing. See more..

Built in 1879, this beautiful library in Hallowell was designed to resemble an English country church and is the oldest public library in Maine. The interior has lovely stained glass windows and impressive woodwork as well as a cross-axial transpect. There are several original paintings hung throughout the library and also a quilt denoting Hallowell's history and landmarks. It's one of the most appealing little libraries I've ever seen. 12. 4.0 Berwick Public Library (1 review)
    - GREAT REFERENCE MATERIALS & SELECTIONS IN ALL OTHER GENRES
    Monday: Libraries
    Berwick Public Library image
In Berwick, I went to the Berwick Public Library to do some research. Inside, I came to the Children’s Room first. It was larger than expected. It took up about 20% of the library space. There were activity areas and seating in the center with child-height book bins all around. I commented on it to the librarian of that area. The Reference section had a larger section of records for genealogical research than I’d seen in many other libraries. I also found books on the histories of Dover and cither nearby communities in Maine and New Hampshire. There was also a set of books on Hartford, CT. I also saw books on Maine families for those doing genealogic research. After finishing my research, I looked at other areas. The Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Young Adults sections were all good-sized. Near the main desk, I saw several public computers. On the main desk, there was a basket with a craft. It was for Banned Books Week. It was a necklace with a pendant on a cord. The pendant had four parts that required assembly. The center of the necklace would hold a pieces of a page from a banned book. I thought that this library was in the same league as libraries in larger towns and cities in the area. I rate the Berwick Public Library at 4.0. 13. 5.0 Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library (1 review)
    - MID-SIZED LIBRARY WITH A WELL-ROUNDED COLLECTION OF BOOKS & MEDIA
    Monday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Libraries
Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library image
In Sanford, I stopped in at the Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library to do some research. On the day of my visit, walk-ins were welcome but had to ring bell to get in. The first floor held media, such as audio and video. En route to the third floor, I checked out the Children’s Room on the second floor. It had a good selection of books and child-sized seating as well as an adult armchair. The bonuses were a window seat with cushions and a fireplace with a beautiful mantel with carvings. In the hallway, I found a collection of jigsaw puzzles with a sign stating they were available for check-out. Reference, Non-Fiction, and History books and maps were on the third floor. In browsing the History section, I found books on the histories of individual nearby towns, such as Wells. I also looked at a couple of books on local history. One particularly thick book was titled “Saco Valley Settlements and Families.” Another reference book of interest was on Maine cooking. On a stand near the back of the Reference Room was an Atlas of Maine. The brick building is a nice piece of architecture. It was built in 1937 in the Colonial Revival style. It is named for United States Representative from Maine, Louis B. Goodall. A unique feature of the building is the weathervane which is topped with a small metal cut-out sculpture of a woman working at a commercial loom to commemorate Sanford’s millworks past. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I found the library staff to be friendly and very helpful. For the architecture, unique features, and the variety of books and media for all ages and interests available, I rate Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library at 5.0 and can recommend a visit. 14. 4.0 Martha Sawyer Community Library (1 review)
    - GOOD LIBRARY WITH SOME HISTORICAL SOCIETY RECORDS
    Monday: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Libraries
    Martha Sawyer Community Library image
After visiting the First Parish Congregational Church on nearby Center Road, I went to the Martha Sawyer Community Library to see if there were reference materials about the church that might give the date the parish was founded and the date the church was built. Due to COVID-19 protocols, people were not allowed inside the library. There was wireless bell attached to a sandwich board near the door that had info and instructions. The library director was on duty, and she nicely researched the info for me. The Lebanon Historical Society had placed some pamphlets about Lebanon history with the library. After a 20-minute search, she came back and told me that there was nothing definitive. She graciously photographed some pages from the records on file and emailed them to me. The set-up on this library is interesting. It’s built onto the back of Hanson Elementary School; and, my guess is that there is access to the library from inside the school. Although small, this library has town history records from the Lebanon Historical Society, so it has good resources for researching information about the town. Although I didn’t get the information I was looking for, I rate the Martha Sawyer Community Library at 4.0. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..

This delightful suburban public library (built 1905, expanded 1988) had parking in a paved lot or curbside on Main Street. Sidewalks ran out in front of it. Among the library’s attractions were a periodicals area, an audiovisual area, and fiction and non-fiction areas, all part of a 36,750-item total collection. It had special sections set aside for children, teens, and adults. Seating options varied greatly. The library’s free Wi-Fi worked well. Electrical outlets were limited but available. Librarians were warmly welcoming and eager to help me find what I sought. The restroom was spotless. I appreciated all that I found here; I disliked nothing. See more..
