    McDougal Orchards image
McDougal Orchards is a diversified, seventh generation family farm in Southern Maine. We specialize in growing high quality apples for pick-your-own customers and our farm stand. You can find us a mile from downtown Sanford and close to the beaches and lakes of York County. Come explore the historic farmland and orchards, or stop in quickly for some ready-picked fruit in the barn. Capt. Jack is usually making fresh cider donuts out in the Donut Shack, too! Come visit our farm animals, spend time in our picnic area, build a woodland house in our fairy village, or get lost in our corn maze. We also offer miles of trails throughout the property for our visitors to enjoy an energetic hike or a leisurely stroll. We are open Mid-August through November for apple picking. See more..
  2. 4.5 North Maine Woods (6 reviews)
    - Fantastic Camping, Exploring, and Historical Trains

    North Maine Woods image
Spent 5 days and 4 nights camping and touring these remote privately owned back country woods. There are gate fees and overnight fees, with discounts for Maine residents. Since I am a 71 year old non resident and alone I only paid for the overnight camping fee at $15 per night. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Visited the old abandoned logging trains left in the woods many years ago, as well as driving many miles exploring the area. See more..
  3. 4.0 Falmouth Nature Preserve (6 reviews)
    - Small Suburban Nature Preserve on Maine's Coast
Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails • Forests
    Falmouth Nature Preserve image
This 76-acre (30.75 ha) natural area was just off ME 88 (Foreside Road) near Mill Creek. A dirt parking lot at the end of a short dirt road had room for a few vehicles. A map at the parking lot depicted the trails. Five dirt trails passed through stands of hemlock, maple, beech, and birch and near a salt marsh and a bog. Terrain varied but was never difficult. Trail surfaces were often uneven. Trails were clearly marked. Their total length was about three miles (4.8 km). We found no scenic overlooks, no outhouses, no printed trail maps. While we sought midsummer wildflowers to photograph – and found a few – other visitors were walking dogs, hiking, and bicycling. Despite the lack of amenities, we greatly enjoyed our walk here. 4. 2.5 Pine Grove Preserve (2 reviews)
    - War Memorials and Woodlands on the King's HIghway
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Forests
    Pine Grove Preserve image
This 27-acre (10.9 ha) pine woods preserve had a 0.75-mile (1.2 km) perimeter trail and several other short trails. Trails were dirt, grass, pine needles, and other natural surfaces. The preserve was on the former King's HIghway (now ME 88) across from Pine Grove Cemetery and the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin. It had three war memorials near the state highway, some easier to find than others. It also had a 0.5-mile (0.8 km) nature walk with 12 helpful interpretive stations. Part of the Preserve may have been the historic site of the former Fort New Casco (1700-1716), which was used briefly as a trading post with the Abenaki. Free parking was in a dirt turnaround northeast of the former Pine Grove School. We most liked the wildflowers we found near some of the trails; we least liked the lack of historical information. 5. 5.0 Davidson Nature Preserve (1 review)
    - Hike Davidson Nature Preserve to a Heron Rookery
Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails • Forests
We found this using Maine Trail Finder, and then Googled it for further info. This is a great trail for a leisurely hike. Mostly flat. Woods and open fields. Use bug spray. Saw waxwings, red-winged blackbirds, etc. Once you reach the edge of the marshy area, you can see the herons nests out to the left up in the trees. We enjoyed this hike, even though it was easy. There's a visitor log at trailhead. See more..
  6. 4.0 Rines Forest (1 review)
    - Waterfalls in the Woods
    Forests
This 268-acre (108.5 ha) woodland was a special place due to its natural beauty and relative quiet. It had 5.4 miles (8.7 km) of color-coded and blazed trails and trailhead and junction map kiosks – no other amenities. Bring water and tick repellent. Some seasonal waterfalls were well worth the time and effort. Trails had easy grades. Among trail users were dog walkers and bicyclists. Limited parking was along the roadside shoulder. I liked all that I found here; I disliked nothing. See more..
