  1. 4.5 Land Bridge to Bar Island (1.376 reviews)
    - A MUST do in Bar Harbor
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Land Bridge to Bar Island image
A trip to Bar Harbor without doing this, is an incomplete trip, this was totally amazing. I would go twice, go at low tide , cross the harbor and hike up Bar Island, then come a few hours later at high tide and see what happend. Once you see both views you will be totally amazed Make sure you check tidal times otherwise you can get stuck and pay $150 to get rescued. Be aware while this is free (You need the Acadia Park Pass to go to Bar Island for a great view of Fisherman's Bay) you have to pay for parking nearby ($2 an hour) See more..

  6. 4.5 Fort McClary State Historic Site (273 reviews)
    - Been There, Done That
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Parks
Fort McClary State Historic Site image
My son was leaving for the Air Force and we wanted to have one last adventure, so we got in the car and decided to put Maine on our list of states we’ve been to. We had just moved to New Hampshire so honestly everything is new to us! Fort McClary is quite nice. We walked around and couldn’t get over how small it really was. The view is fantastic! We spent the last 10 years in Arizona so to see an are so “small” was a bit mind blowing. It would have been really cool to have gone into the building, but it wasn’t open (perhaps a Covid thing, not sure) We saw a short path to the left of the fort but didn’t take it. You can get to the water by climbing down a few rocks, my son just HAD to put his hand in to say he’s been to both oceans! If you want to make a memory, I’m going to say it’s worth it. The short drive is really beautiful as well. See more..
  7. 4.5 Stephen King's House (261 reviews)
    - Grand Victorian Home
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Stephen King's House image
This spooky Victorian mansion in the heart of Bangor’s Whitney Park Historic District was, up until recently, the home of famed horror author Stephen King. Snap a picture in front of the iconic iron gate, adorned with spiders, bats, and even a three-headed dragon. There's even a frighteningly intricate tree sculpture that sits on the lawn. While you can't explore the interiors of the house—it's now a nonprofit and archive of King's work—there are tours that will take you to spots in Derry that have inspired his most famous work. The beautiful, century-old homes in the quiet neighborhood are worth a quick look, too. – Tripadvisor See more..

  12. 4.5 Fort Foster (85 reviews)
    - Beautiful Park
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Fort Foster image
Ft. Foster Park is lovely. Has nice walking/biking trails and great views of the harbor and the lighthouse. You can go past the gate for $20. The amenities are great. Well separated picnic areas, clean bathrooms which are located in two different areas as the park is very spread out. Also one turn off road leads to a rocky beach if you want to put a kayak in or go diving (watch the tides). Pets are allowed on leash. For me, the cost was worth it since most people would not want to pay the price which keeps a lot of cars out and leaves more parking availability. See more..
  13. 4.5 Liberty Ship Memorial (78 reviews)
    - One of South Portland's landmarks.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Liberty Ship Memorial image
This metal silhouette memorial is a wonderful tribute to the 30,000 people who contributed to the World War II effort. There were 236 liberty ships built in the South Portland shipyard. It's a striking structure to see, in a beautiful waterfront park with a gem of a little lighthouse known as 'Bug Light' and views of several islands and the Portland waterfront. See more..

What a great opportunity the Bush Family has given the general public to at least get a glimpse of what their home looks like. When the flag is raised, they are in residence and you can definitely tell by all the secret service cars on the property. We thoroughly enjoyed stopping here. See more..
  15. 4.0 Two Cent Bridge (56 reviews)
    - The grates and slight swaying are not for the faint of heart (or some dogs).
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Two Cent Bridge image
This is a cool historic little footbridge! Great views of the river (of course), the nearby train trestle, the park, and some Winslow industrial buildings. Walking on the grates didn't bother me like they bother some other people, although I once had a Springer spaniel who had a phobia about grates and refused to walk on them. The bridge does actually sway a little, enough to give me a tinge of motion sickness, so I didn't go all the way across to Winslow AZ -- I mean Maine! See more..
  16. 4.5 America's First Mile (43 reviews)
    - Love Stuff Like This
Monday: 12:00 AM - 10:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    America's First Mile image
When I learned about this I had to come visit. I have been to Mile 0 in Key West so this had to happen. I took US 1 from Houlton to here and it was well worth it. Found lots of interesting things along the way. Fort Kent itself is a nice town with lots of friendly people. Many seemed surprised that I would come this far out of the way just to see this. Great little park that's well kept with a parking lot beside it. If you want a little memento of your visit go over to the municipal office just on the south side of the road just past the border crossing. They have a little shop in there. And yes that is the border crossing into Canada that you see in behind the photos. It is directly beside the park. Had to make sure I did the ArriveCan app before crossing. Almost got caught as I didn't realize it was that close. So grateful that I could come visit here. See more..

  18. 4.5 Babbs Covered Bridge (33 reviews)
    - New England covered bridge with a sad story.
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Babbs Covered Bridge image
This is a replica of what used to be Maine's oldest covered bridge, built in 1840. The original bridge was burned by vandals in the early 1970s but was historically reconstructed in 1976. Vandals continue to abuse this poor bridge (they have nothing better to do?). In spite of it, though, it's a beautiful structure that spans the Presumpscot River. When we went, we saw a few guys fishing from the riverbank near it. Helpful hint: if you walk inside the covered bridge, be cautious of oncoming vehicles because the bridge is narrow and dark, even in the daytime, and they can't see you. See more..
  19. 4.5 Hemlock Covered Bridge (25 reviews)
    - A Scenic Piece of Living History
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Hemlock Covered Bridge image
After attending the Fryeburg Fair, we decided to find this covered bridge. It can be slow going on the dirt road, but it's worth it! The bride is in use, and you can drive over it. It's nestled off the beaten path so you don't have to worry about crowds. The bridge is a magnificent piece of living history, and very scenic. The Autumn colors helped make the experience even more fantastic. The river underneath is tranquil. You can walk inside the bridge and see it's unique architecture, and look out the windows cut in the wood. There is a place to pull off and park and a plaque which gives a brief history. You could have lunch here and it's a great photo opportunity, and romantic. Trash cans and tables, but no facilities. No fees. See more..

This is a footbridge, operated by ordinary people passing by. When a boat needs it raised, they may just sound their horn to get someone to push the button. Run on up there, and do it! So much fun!!! You hold the button and the warning bell sounds. I know it's corny, but it's just good, ol' fashion FUN!!! See more..

After visiting the small Zillman Art Museum(under renovation), we stopped here. The large steel water tank is enclosed in a round wooden building, separated with a window lit stairway, all shingled and painted white. A very distinctive landmark, as is the nearby 19th C Victorian mansion where Stephan King lived for 37 years which may be destined to become a writer’s retreat. See more..
  27. 3.5 World's Largest Telephone (11 reviews)
    - Roadside Attraction
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    World's Largest Telephone image
Not much of a destination, but a fun pit stop if you're driving through New England! (Especially if you're into weird roadside attractions, like I am.) Bryant Pond was the last town in the U.S. to give up on hand-crank telephones, and in 2008 they decided to build a huge freakin' monument to celebrate it. The thing's 14 feet tall and weighs 3,000 pounds; it's hard to miss, especially since there's not much else of note around it. No gift shop that we could see, but you can climb all around it and take as many photos as you want. See more..

The venue is available for rentals so you can have your own celebration, concert, meeting, celebration of life, and more, right here at the entrance to Lewiston's Riverfront district. We give tours of our venue and tell stories about the French Canadian immigrants for whom the church was built in 1907. South Solon Meetinghouse image
I love simple white wooden New England churches, but this one is very special. This Gothic Revival rural church dates from 1842 and its interior is filled with floor-to-ceiling frescoes throughout, painted from 1952 through 1957 by 13 artists from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. The ceiling fresco is particularly remarkable, as is the church's interior with its original pews, podium, choir loft, and leaded windows. One could easily spend hours here taking in the art, serenity, and overall beauty of the place. Normally you only find churches like this in Europe. It was the highlight of my day trip to the Skowhegan area. See more..

    - Quiet Suburban Cemetery on the Foreside

    Pine Grove Cemetery image
This private cemetery was next to Portland Country Club, just off Foreside Road (ME 88). It held more than 7,200 memorials and was the town’s largest cemetery. Dirt lanes on easy grades traversed its burial grounds. Lawns and lots were well maintained. Headstones, obelisks, and other monuments were mostly in good repair. Autumn foliage of its oaks and maples was brilliant. Older gravestones were in a grove of pines that gave the place its name; some dated back to the late 1700s or so. A few locals walked through the cemetery as if it were a park; otherwise it was entirely quiet. I liked all that I found here. See more..

    - Sprawling City Cemetery Overlooking the Fore River
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries
    Forest City Cemetery image
This 97-acre (39.25 ha) cemetery, with its many un-mowed lawns encompassing at least 30,000 burial sites, had a forlorn and neglected look to it. It offered relatively few shade trees, but it proved to be an excellent place for a walk (or a bike ride), unless perhaps on a particularly hot summer day. It had water spigots to care for grave plots, but no other amenities. I most appreciated its several magnificent, historic tombstones and its quiet sanctuary. I disliked only its scarcity of mature shade trees and its indifferent maintenance. See more..
  37. 4.5 Martin's Point Bridge (2 reviews)
    - “Graceful Bicyclist-Friendly Bridge Spans the Presumpscot River”
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges • Scenic Walking Areas
Finally, a bridge built with walkers and bicyclists in mind! Completed in 2014, the new Martin’s Point Bridge crosses the Presumpscot River from Falmouth to Portland. It replaces an older bridge (1943) that replaced another bridge (1868) that replaced the first bridge (1828) here. The new bridge is 1,403 feet (427.6 m) long. It’s a sleek and graceful, 10-span, steel and concrete structure. It has multi-use paths on either side of its traffic lanes. It also has two decks for observing river wildlife. Plaques explain the bridge’s history. A large sculpture of an osprey and its nest is on the bridge’s northern end. The bridge is viewable from the northerly beach of 100-acre (40.5 ha) Mackworth Island State Park (fees). It’s also viewable from the looping, paved 0.25-mile (0.4 km) Martin’s Point Trail, where bridge fans can find parking. The bridge’s observation decks, plaques, and sculpture – as well as the engineering – all make it worth a look. See more..

  43. 4.0 Alfred Town Hall (1 review)
    - 1862 ITALIANATE TOWN HALL WITH A BRACKETED ROOF
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Alfred Town Hall image
The Village area of Alfred has always seemed like a set for a movie about the 1800’s. It seems untouched by time. One building in this timeframe is the Alfred Town Hall. After visiting other places in the Village one day, I paused to study the town hall. It dates back to 1862. The tall, narrow windows and low-pitched roof are hallmarks of the Italianate style of architecture. This building is an 1800’s Americanized version of that style. The bracketed roof adds interest to the façade. I rate the Alfred Town Hall at 4.25 and can recommend a stop to admire it, especially the bracketed roof. The reason for the delay in submitting this review was due to a months-long loss of my ability to post photos with my reviews. If you found this review useful, please click HELPFUL. See more..
  44. 4.0 First Baptist Church (1 review)
    - MAINE’S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING BAPTIST CHURCH
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    First Baptist Church image
In Maine over a weekend, I happened upon the First Baptist Church of North Berwick when I stopped by the Cumberland Farms across the street. The most striking thing about this wooden church that caught my attention was that it was not a white clapboard church. It appeared to be an older historic building. Later research revealed that it was the oldest continuously operating Baptist Church in Maine. It was founded in June of 1678. At that time, Maine was still a province of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a colony that was sanctioned by the King of England. The church marked two milestones in: 1) religious freedom; and, 2) the separation of church and state. At one time, it was illegal to be a Baptist in Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Just over a century later, Baptist beliefs helped form the wording of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. For its historic significance and distinctive architectural features, I rate the First Baptist Church of North Berwick at 4.25 and recommend a look-see to anyone interested in historic sites and/or older churches. 45. 5.0 Dana Warp Mill (1 review)
    - WESTBROOK’S SIGNATURE HISTORIC LANDMARK
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Dana Warp Mill image
The Dana Warp Mill is the signature historic landmark of Westbrook. It’s on the header of the city’s home web page and appropriately so because Westbrook developed into a city from its mill town roots. The mill is a big part of the city's heritage. The massive structure on the banks of the Presumpscot River near the Saccarappa Falls started off as a small mill when Woodbury Dana bought it in 1866. Over the years, his cotton warp business grew, and his mill expanded into the series of connected buildings we see today. The mill was acquired by Chinburg Properties which is headed by a degreed engineer. It was expertly restored and updated to house offices and businesses. The company has done other similar projects in other cities. One is the Cocheco Mills in Dover, NH where I live. It’s great to see the old mills being preserved and reused. The mill’s presence on the other side of the river from a small section of the Westbrook River Walk on the west side of Bridge Street adds to a scenic view of Saccarappa Falls. . For its historic value, for what it adds to the scenic landscape, and for how it’s been restored, I rate the Dana Warp Mill at 5.0 and highly recommend crossing Bridge Street to get a closer look at the mill when visiting the Westbrook River Walk. - WESTBROOK’S CITY MURAL

    Westbrook Mural image
After going through the Warren Memorial Sculpture Garden, I walked over to the Westbrook Mural which was on the side of the building adjacent to the garden. Inside all the letters in Westbrook were scenes from the city. I thought it was well done. I rate the Westbrook Mural at 4.0. The photo came out quite dark because the mural was in full shade late in the afternoon. - PRETTY NEW ENGLAND WHITE CLAPBOARD CHURCH

    First Parish Congregational Church image
Lebanon was first settled it in 1743 and incorporated 1767. The church was established sometime in that period. There was no dated plaque on the building. I tried to research the exact year at the library, but the historical society records on file there didn’t have the information. It was a pretty New England church with white clapboards, a cupola, and a belfry. The unusual thing about this church was that the front of the church faced the parking lot. The back of the church faced Jim Grant Road. The top of the weathervane had something with a design that I couldn’t quite make out. It may have been a fish shape. For its classic architecture for a New England church, I rate First Parish Congregational Church at 4.25. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..

    - This mural has an interesting story.

I've driven by this eye-catching mural hundreds of times since moving to the Saco/Biddeford area and finally found out what it means. The boy is making a phonecall to a little girl in Slemani, Iraq (where the corresponding mural actually is). The fence symbolizes the barriers between each country and the fence opening represents communication. The project was commissioned by Boston's Good Works Foundation to "encourage cross-country bridge-building among youths to foster empathy and friendship". - Amazing Art Gallery near Sunday River!
Monday: Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
Table Rock Arts Center (TRAC) is a wonderful addition to the community of Bethel, ME. We love to stop here on our adventures to/from Sunday River because of the diverse artwork on display. Local and regional artists from Western Maine and various parts of New England have created some unique and beautiful pieces and you'll want to visit often to see the new art that arrives each month. Oh and the prices are very affordable for any budget. Amy Halsted and the artists working at the gallery are very friendly and easy to approach. I always feel energized by my visit to TRAC and have been lucky enough to stop by during a couple of their gatherings. They are very welcoming and the space is very peaceful. See more..

    - PICTURESQUE HISTORIC CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

    Congregational Church Of Wells image
Driving on US-1, I came to the Congregational Church of Wells. I’d passed it hundreds of times. I had time to stop to admire it on this trip. It was obviously built sometime in the 1800’s. I did not see a date plaque on the building. A little research revealed that this congregation is the original First Congregational Church in Wells, although today’s location is not the original location. The congregation itself dates back to 1642 when Rev. John Wheelwright and some of his followers moved up from Boston after the Court of Massachusetts ordered him out for preaching Puritan beliefs. The congregation went through a number of changes over the years. Due to differences in beliefs and distances from the original church, several other churches were formed. One was the Second Congregational Church. With help from the historical society, I learned that present church structure was built in 1862. And, after fundraising, the tower, spire, and belfry were added in 1868 – 1869. The front of the church has one window on each side of the center entrance and a third window over the entrance. Each side of the church has three similar windows. They resemble lancet windows. With the pointed top sections, I thought they had a Gothic architectural influence. I was glad that I was photographing the church while the large tree in front of the church had no leaves. I got an unobstructed view for the photo. For its architecture and picturesque setting, I rate the Congregational Church of Wells at 4.25. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
