  1. 4.5 Stephen King's House (261 reviews)
    - Grand Victorian Home

    Stephen King's House image
This spooky Victorian mansion in the heart of Bangor’s Whitney Park Historic District was, up until recently, the home of famed horror author Stephen King. Snap a picture in front of the iconic iron gate, adorned with spiders, bats, and even a three-headed dragon. There's even a frighteningly intricate tree sculpture that sits on the lawn. While you can't explore the interiors of the house—it's now a nonprofit and archive of King's work—there are tours that will take you to spots in Derry that have inspired his most famous work. The beautiful, century-old homes in the quiet neighborhood are worth a quick look, too. – Tripadvisor See more..

    State Capitol image
Augusta is sandwiched between Portland and Bangor but the state capital is quite beautiful. The State does a nice job maintaining the grounds and the capital is located on a hill. The building was built around 1832 and serves as a beacon for the community. While there is not too much to see in Augusta this is one building that is worth a stop. See more..

    - Ogunquit Memorial Library - A MUST See!!!

    Ogunquit Memorial Library image
You must see this adorable library! I can't believe this site isn't just buzzing about it. It is such a treat to glimpse into yesteryear and see how the Victorians lived and loved. Loved? Yes, this library was erected in 1897 by a woman in the memory of her husband. Once you go inside, you'll want to stay just to admire it all. A Fireplace! Old books! Archways! Stone walls! A vase of fresh flowers! The soft lighting inside is due in part to the beautiful big windows near the ceiling. We spoke to the head librarian who had worked there for years and lives just up the street. She was a wealth of information and had a very sweet disposition that we could have easily stayed the day just to absorb the ambiance. See more..

The Franco Center is a performing arts and events venue located in a former Catholic church. The building's architecture is Late Gothic Revival style and draws a lot of attention just for its looks. The acoustics inside are incredible. The venue is available for rentals so you can have your own celebration, concert, meeting, celebration of life, and more, right here at the entrance to Lewiston's Riverfront district. We give tours of our venue and tell stories about the French Canadian immigrants for whom the church was built in 1907. We have a diverse calendar of events which engage both audiences and performers. Make sure to visit us and learn more! See more..

    South Solon Meetinghouse image
I love simple white wooden New England churches, but this one is very special. This Gothic Revival rural church dates from 1842 and its interior is filled with floor-to-ceiling frescoes throughout, painted from 1952 through 1957 by 13 artists from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. The ceiling fresco is particularly remarkable, as is the church's interior with its original pews, podium, choir loft, and leaded windows. One could easily spend hours here taking in the art, serenity, and overall beauty of the place. Normally you only find churches like this in Europe. It was the highlight of my day trip to the Skowhegan area. See more..
