It's not every day you get to see the World's Tallest Indian and did I mention I love unusual roadside attractions like this. Couldn't help seeing this while driving through and its actually in a parking lot off the road. Was worth a quick stop to see this and read about it.See more..

4.0Bow Street/memorial Park(2 reviews) - Civil War Monument Near Freeport’s Outlet Stores Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
This one- acre (0.4 ha) park at the corner of Park and Bow Streets was just off the beaten path. Its shade trees and several benches offered places for rest, repose, and reflection. Its granite Union soldier monument, dedicated in May 1906, stood in solemn testimony to local sacrifices during the Civil War. The grounds also had paved paths and Civil War cannons and cannonballs. I liked all that I found here.See more..
5.0One Blue Sky Mural(1 review) - This mural has an interesting story. Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues • Scenic Walking Areas
I've driven by this eye-catching mural hundreds of times since moving to the Saco/Biddeford area and finally found out what it means. The boy is making a phonecall to a little girl in Slemani, Iraq (where the corresponding mural actually is). The fence symbolizes the barriers between each country and the fence opening represents communication. The project was commissioned by Boston's Good Works Foundation to "encourage cross-country bridge-building among youths to foster empathy and friendship". You can find out more about it in AtlasObscura.See more..
Passing through Westbrook while heading home from Portland, I made a stop at Riverbank Park. Coming in the entrance roadway, I came to a traffic circle that had The Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the center. It depicts a Union soldier from the American Civil War era casually walking along with his rifle resting on his shoulder. It suggested that the war was over, and he was heading home. The monument and base were the result of community contributions from schools, businesses, and individuals raised over a two-year period. The monument was dedicated in 1917. My reaction to the soldier was that he was a welcoming figure to park visitors. I thought that the sculpture of the soldier and the base were very well executed. I rate the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at Riverbank Park at 4.50 and suggest stopping by to view it when in Westbrook. The reason for the delay in submitting this review was due to a months-long loss of my ability to post photos with my reviews. If you found this review useful, please click HELPFUL.See more..
The Maine Sailors and Soldiers Memorial (WW I) is in the park at the John Paul Jones Historic Site. It faces oncoming traffic from Portsmouth, NH on the US-1. One can get a decent look at it driving by; but, the best way to get to see this monument up close is to walk over after dining at Warren’s Lobster House as there is no parking on US-1 which is what I did. I visited this and another monument during my walk through this park. Instead of showing soldiers, the bronze bas relief memorial shows a woman protecting her child. There are info boards near the memorial. A large emblem-type bronze piece with a soldier and a sailor is attached to the back. I rate the Maine Sailors and Soldiers Memorial (WW I) at 4.0 and recommend a visit. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
4.0The Big F Indian(1 review) - The Big Freeport Indian (or Native American or Indigenous American). Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
Well, there's the 16-ft tall rubber bottom boot in front of L. L. Bean's, and then there's the 60-ft tall Big Freeport Indian a few miles down Route One in front of what used to be the Casco Bay Trading Post but is now a home renovation business. Built in 1969, it's been a landmark at the entrance of Freeport for over 50 years. In these days of political correctness, who knows how long it'll remain standing (or in this case, looming ominously).See more..
3.0Uss Thresher Memorial Flagpole(1 review) - COMMEMORATES LOSS OF USS THRESHER & 129 PEOPLE ONBOARD Monuments & Statues
USS Thresher (SSN-593) was a nuclear-powered attack submarine built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The sub and everyone aboard were lost during a deep-diving test east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in April 1963. I remember the news reports of this when I was quite young.. It was very sad. When I pass this memorial, I always have a moment of silence in their memory. The memorial has a prominent site in Kittery to be seen by many people as it is in the center of the Kittery Memorial Circle. The main part of the memorial is a flagpole that is 129 feet high to commemorate the 129 people onboard who died. The second part is also a large stone block with USS Thresher carved into it. It faces Rt. 236 coming in from the northwest. There are other memorials to USS Thresher in Kittery, but this one is the most visible and easiest to find. I rate USS Thresher Memorial Flagpole at 3.50. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
3.0Sloop Ranger Memorial(1 review) - MEMEORIAL TO JOHN PAUL JONES SHIP Monuments & Statues The Sloop Ranger Memorial is appropriately located in the park at the John Paul Jones Historic Site. It is easy to drive right past this without even noticing it because 99% of the time it’s in shade, and it’s not very big. I found it by walking the park. The memorial resembles an old-style gravestone with a metal plaque on it. The memorial is for the sloop of war built nearby for John Paul Jones nearby in 1777. The plaque mentions Burgoyne's Surrender in 1778 and a salute from the French fleet. It doesn’t mention all the ships it captured before being captured near Charleston, under the command of Jones’ first officer, and subsequently becoming part of the British fleet. The memorial is quite ordinary-looking but does have historical value and significance. I rate Sloop Ranger Memorial at 3.50. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
