  1. 4.5 Eastern Promenade Trail (738 reviews)
    - Beautiful, large waterfront park

    Eastern Promenade Trail image
We parked along the street on Eastern Promenade. There are large beautiful homes along this street facing the park. According to signs, the park has 68 acres (I think this includes the small section designated as Fort Allen Park) and the original design was done by the Olmsted Brothers. The large grassy expanse and trails are well kept, and quite a few people were out enjoying the sunny afternoon and it felt very safe. We saw people who appeared to be gathering for a small wedding. There are benches and various historical markers scattered throughout. There are great views of Casco Bay for watching boats go by. You can see Fort Gorges out in the bay, and with binoculars you can see Bug Light, Spring Point Ledge Light, and Portland Head Light to the south. See more..
  2. 4.5 Carriage Roads (565 reviews)
    - Witch Hole Pond Loop and Around the Mountain
Monday: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Biking Trails
    Carriage Roads image
Walking on the Witch Hole Pond loop has become a tradition for us - we do it either on the arrival day to watch the sunset or on the last day of our trips to take a break from serious hiking. The loop has everything: tranquil ponds, ruby colors of blueberry bushes in the fall, smooth granite patches on both sides of the road, fabulous vistas of the ocean from the Paradise Hill, atmospheric stone bridge so typical for Acadia Carriage Roads, beautiful trees adorned in gold and red… Always a joy to come back for this easy 4 miles walk. Parking wasn’t a challenge last Saturday unlike completely mobbed parking lot at Jordan Pond. We also walked on the Around the Mountain carriage road up to the intersection with Asticou/Penobscot trails and then veered off to the Penobscot Mountain hike, which I highly recommend doing. The road, the bridge, and the views were spectacular along the way. If you are looking for the fall colors in Acadia, walk or bike Around the Mountain. See more..
  3. 4.5 Penobscot River Walkway (107 reviews)
    - A beautiful view, a comfortable stroll.

    Penobscot River Walkway image
We happened upon the River Walk when we were looking for parking for a local restaurant in Brewer. We walked the entire length of the walkway, took about 30 minutes in all, but the scenery was very nice. Plenty of flowers blooming in the early September sun, the river was clean and the waterfowl were plentiful. We walked down some stone steps to the kayak launch and were greeted by no less than a dozen ducks, who are clearly used to people by now, and said hello before heading back up to traverse the rest of the path. You get to see across the Penobscot into the waterfront area of Bangor, as well as the "Children's Garden," the steeples of the churches in Bangor, the bridges over the Penobscot, and some of the local businesses over in Brewer. If you're looking to engage in some natural wonder without going too far off the beaten path, this is absolutely what you are searching for. See more..

We only had time for one trail and did the platform trail. It was fantastic, and this was even on an overcast day which ultimately had light right. It was a flat walk with lots to see and we had ages 7 to 82 with us, who were all able to enjoy the walk. Perfect for families. See more..

  7. 5.0 Spring Point Shoreway (8 reviews)
    - Walking trail on the waterfront!
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
    Spring Point Shoreway image
A very enjoyable walkway that extends from Willard Beach, through the campus of Southern Maine Community College, past Spring Point Light, and through the former World War II shipyard (part of which is now a marina). If you walk through the gate into the marina, you'll find signs directing you to stay on the trail, walking past a restaurant, in front of condos and back onto a street. If you keep following along the waterfront, you'll arrive at beautiful Bug Light Park, home of a lighthouse, a great (free admission) history museum, and the giant Shipyard Memorial that has photos and information about the Liberty ships that were built in South Portland in the 1940s. The trail is a 1.4 loop and can be a bit challenging at a couple of points. The views from the top give a panoramic view of the Belgrade Lakes and Kennebec Highlands area. You can geocache your way along the trails. Make sure to bring your bug spray during bug season! See more..

    - Thank you, family and friends of Beth Condon
Spent < 1 hour Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
This path, in honor of Beth Condon, makes Yarmouth more of what it is - a walkable, safe, enjoyable community. I use the path all the time to get from Royal River Park to the stores on Route One. Thank you, family and friends of Beth Condon, for turning a terrible tragedy into a wonderful community asset. See more..

  11. 5.0 The Mountain (4 reviews)
    - Scenic Views Along Well-Marked Trails
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
The trail system is well-marked and used by many. There is what appears to be an old logging/woods trail that has loops of Long Pond and Great Pond. If you like to geocache, there are a few here to break up the hike! We have come here over the years and always enjoy the hike and the views. This is also one of the trails of the Kennebec Highlands - easy hiking area! See more..

  14. 2.5 Pine Grove Preserve (2 reviews)
    - War Memorials and Woodlands on the King's HIghway
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Forests
    Pine Grove Preserve image
This 27-acre (10.9 ha) pine woods preserve had a 0.75-mile (1.2 km) perimeter trail and several other short trails. Trails were dirt, grass, pine needles, and other natural surfaces. The preserve was on the former King's HIghway (now ME 88) across from Pine Grove Cemetery and the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin. It had three war memorials near the state highway, some easier to find than others. It also had a 0.5-mile (0.8 km) nature walk with 12 helpful interpretive stations. Part of the Preserve may have been the historic site of the former Fort New Casco (1700-1716), which was used briefly as a trading post with the Abenaki. Free parking was in a dirt turnaround northeast of the former Pine Grove School. We most liked the wildflowers we found near some of the trails; we least liked the lack of historical information. 15. 4.0 Sanford Trails (1 review)
    - AN UNEXPECTED FIND OUT BEHIND SANFORD JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
    Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails
    Sanford Trails image
As part of discovering Gowen Memorial Park, I also discovered the Mousam Way Trail South when I found an access point to Mousam Way Trail South off the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. As I learned later, it was only a small section of a much larger network of trails though Sanford and Springvale. Mousam Way Trail South is in Sanford. Much of Mousam Way Trail North is in Springvale. The trail gets its name from the Mousam River. Mousam Way Trail South is very close to the river. The part of the trail I explored had another access point across William Oscar Emery Drive from the Mousam River’s Pond No. 1. It was a scenic area. There was ample on-street parking. I trekked parts of the trail from the two access points. When I encountered multiple turns and spur trails from both access points, I did not continue because I did not have my compass with me as I was not expecting to do any trekking or hiking on this visit to Sanford and Springvale. The parts of the trail I did cover were relatively easy. Beginning sections of both ends were paved. I liked the section near the parking lot off Gowen Park Drive in in Gowen Memorial Park. There was a short wooden footbridge there. There was a large lily pond close to the trail. My visit was a nice walk in the woods. I rate my experience with the Mousam Way Trail South at 4.0. And, admission to the trail is free. Dogs are allowed on this trail, but they must be leashed. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
