Don Gorvett Piscataqua Fine Arts Studio & Gallery image
Don Gorvett produces his memorable woodcut prints in his Studio and Gallery in downtown Portsmouth, NH. He is a graduate of the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and a past board member of the Boston Printmakers. Work can also be found at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, MA., Boston Athenaeum, Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH., Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockport, ME., Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA., Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA., Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA., Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, MA. Ogunquit Museum of American Art as well as other public and private collection. Artist Statement "These woodcuts express the abstract geometric shapes and distant configurations of our architecture in the Northeast. Upon the sea waters of estuaries and harbors, mirror the play of interweaving lights and darks of buildings and piers crowned by steeples and mast tops. I am fascinated by the ghostly quality of these buildings looming out of the mists, endowed with strength and endurance. For me, historic architecture represents a bridge between one life-span into another. Abandoned not by time, but by those who built them, our structures remain and continue to wage war with nature’s elements." See more..

  28. 5.0 Jud Hartmann Gallery (3 reviews)
    - Absolutely #1 must-see attraction in Blue Hill
    Monday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Art Galleries
    Jud Hartmann Gallery image
We have returned to the Jud Hartmann Gallery every few years to see his ongoing evolution of bronze sculptures depicting past Northeastern native Americans of the powerful Iroquois nation. Jud researches journals and diaries of frontiersmen, missionaries and soldiers who encountered these tribesmen and then creates limited edition sculptures and busts with brief descriptions and background sources. As Edward Curtis’s photos depicted Western and Great Plains Native American tribes around 1900, Jud's sculptures focus on the Iroquois at the height of their power three centuries ago. Jud is very engaging and will cheerfully explain the sources of information and the process involved to transform those descriptions to three dimensional works of art. This large, two-story gallery provides a fascinating, educational experience for all visitors. His Blue Hill gallery is open from mid-June to mid-September. See more..

Denmark Arts Center is an old grange building turned into gallery, performance, theater, music, dance center and brings courses, workshops and local and international artists together with the community in western Maine and North Conway area of NH. In the fall, I was treated to a dance performance by a local duo Hio Ridge Dance. another weekend I saw some Turkish music in a cabaret setting BYOB with art on the walls produced during a recent workshop. I will be in the area early April and plan to stop by on the night they have a famous Cretan musician who played at Carnegie Hall earlier this year. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, feeling like neighbors getting together. A true treasure hidden in rural Maine. Excellent website with detailed calendar. See more..
  33. 4.0 Sanford Springvale Art Gallery (2 reviews)
    - SMALL GALLERY FEATURING WORKS BY LOCAL ARTISTS
Spent < 1 hour Art Galleries
Visiting Sanford, I spent some time in the downtown area. I found the Sanford Springvale Art Gallery across from Downtown Center Park, next door to the Sanford Springvale Chamber, and two doors down from Oldtimers’ Shop, a shop that sells locally-crafted gifts and useful items. This gallery, although small, has some very nice artwork by local artists. There were a lot of paintings and photographs of coastal scenes and birds. I particularly liked several winter scenes featuring cardinals perched on snow-covered branches. I also like a watercolor of a marsh scene that reminded me of the Biddeford section of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. There was also some glasswork on display. The curator on duty told me that the exhibited work changes about every two months. I rate this gallery at 4.25. I recommend a visit to this attraction and the nearby Oldtimers’ Shop. This is the most varied, unexpected shop we've enjoyed in a long time. There is so much to experience from the original tin ceilings, the sunny windows, but it's the art, crafts, jewelry, furniture, vintage and antiques that really made this just what we wanted. We bought treasures starting at $3.50 on up for bigger pieces. Great for your home, babies & kids, family & friends, goods & gifts for all your life. It's a community space too - hosting classes for kids & adults in art, yoga, craft, knitting, or a place to have meetings, hold book groups, social events, or just drop by. Emily Pience & Jason DuFour are the shops namesakes and couldn't be more invigorating, enjoyable & helpful. We've traveled here twice from Massachusetts this summer already. See more..
